Just curious. In one of the screen shots above, you show many units receiving upgrades and replacements at Pearl. Are your replacement pools deep enough to fill out these units? Reason I ask is that you might want to selectively target units (perhaps you have and its just this screen shot that seems odd) for replaces and upgrades at this time as you could find pools empty when you want to upgrade key combat/frontline units. Looks like a lot of non-combat units on that list. I'd understand the replacements as many US base forces and AA units are understrength at the start of the game, but are you sure you want these units to upgrade too?

Welcome to The War College Simon-

For now, yes. I have stripped Pearl and sent infantry, base forces, artillery, and AA units to Tahiti, India and Australia. So, I wanted what was left to be as strong as possible as I have like 500 aircraft at Pearl.

A couple U. S. Marine regiments are on their way to Pearl to give Pearl some infantry strength. But, I am considering using those regiments to assault Marcus Island.

Anyways, thank you for mentioning something I may have over-looked and something I do need to pay more attention too as I haven't really turned off any upgrades for any troops or aircraft or ships.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Methinks you need to check that aggressive streak and bide your time for a bit longer.

Marcus is extremely isolated. Likely lightly defended and would be able to take it rather easily if you get there undetected without a reaction from the KB.

Question is what do you do with it after you have it. The ability to station LBA there would be limited.

Certainly not enough capacity to protect itself from a KB raid.

How are you going to continue to support it. The sea route there has no LBA cover of your own so will be solely dependent on your carriers for escort which places them and the transports at risk form a KB strike.

Not sure if the Marianas are close enough for Netty range, but this would also be a very large factor if it is.

You have to work to suppress that urge to "do something, do anything" to strike back.

Judging form your last map post your opponent is way, way behind the expansion curve in the DEI, NG, Admiralties, Solomons and Gilberts.

For petes sake he hasn't even taken Rabaul yet.

You would be far better served using your Marcus force to start building bastions in those locales where you can cover yourself with LBA.

It's always advisable to start the game with the upgrade, replacement and base building toggles set to off.

You can then prioritize by manually enabling the ones you want.

Anyways, thank you for mentioning something I may have over-looked and something I do need to pay more attention too as I haven't really turned off any upgrades for any troops or aircraft or ships.

You'll really should start to be on top of this. Upgrades require large bases and supply so that means units based in CONUS or well behind the front lines are sure to take the lion's share if you leave upgrades and replacements on without managing them. This will mean your restricted units (LCU's and air groups) get fat and happy and your front line units will suffer. Your ships will automatically enter refit mode if they are in port and you won't be able to do anything about it until the refits are completed. As Hans mentioned, it would be best to turn off all upgrades and reinforcements for all unit types (planes, LCU's and ships) and they go back through and manage it more carefully. It could really bite you later in the game or at best will limit your options at exactly the wrong time. Food for thought.

Hans-

Well, damn!

I have the same problem anywhere...everywhere...the damn KB!

I guess, for now, I will just leave the two Marine regiments at Pearl (when they get there).

I am going to have this same problem at Dutch Harbor. A BF, Construction Engineer, AA Unit, are presently in route to Dutch Harbor. Two U.S. Army Regiments arrive as reinforcements in two days and I was planning to send one of them to Dutch Harbor and the other to Adak Island.

And yes, I do need to pay more attention to the whole Upgrade thing.

Thank you for trying to keep my wings clipped, Hans.

Simon-

I will turn off all upgrades on April 2, 1942.

I will try to find information in the manual as to Base Size and amount of supply needed to upgrade ground and air forces. I seem to recall reading something about a minimum of 25,000 supply is required, but not sure about that.

I will get back to you when I learn the required procedure to upgrade units. And, I will get back to you regarding which force(s) I intend to upgrade first.

Thank you for your help.

Another good rule of thumb is to never allow a unit that is restricted that you want to buy out someday to take replacements or upgrade unless the theater it is restricted to becomes a combat zone and you need to flesh the unit out to full strength to fight.

The cost to buy out in PPs is based on unit strength, so keep them understrength until AFTER you buy them out.

In India and Oz this is, of course, dependent on the need or lack thereof to use the units for active defense.

In CONUS you have almost no reason to let units take replacements or upgrades unless they are already unrestricted.

The cost of switching a base command is also dependent on the levels of airfields and ports, so buy them out BEFORE you build them up heavily.

Hans-

I have already notice that when my restricted units grow in strength it costs more PPs to buy them out. Wish I would have paid attention to this sooner.

Why would I want to change a Base Command?

Lastly, I am hoping, that to upgrade ground unit devices they don't have to be at a national base?

As always, thank you for your input, Hans!

There is very little need for changing base commands unless you want to be able to air transport a restricted unit there by changing the command to match that of the restricted unit.

Typically, this technique is used to be able to evacuate Dutch units to Oz.

Well, damn!

Wish I would have thought of this on day one of the outbreak of hostilities! I could have flown the Dutch air forces out of harms way.

P.S. Just sent EL Lobo turn 117 with all ground and air unit upgrades turned off except the 1st Motor Brigade of I Australian Corps.

To answer your question about land unit upgrades - they can upgrade anywhere there is enough supply and devices in the pools, but will upgrade faster if at a large base with lots of supply and in the presence of a command HQ. If there are too few devices to go around, I think the AI does the upgrades in the order of the database reference number for the unit - found near the top left of the unit screen, assuming all the units needing the devices are set to upgrade.
The only sure way to direct them where you want them to go is to turn off all upgrades and stockpile, then when you have enough, turn on upgrades for the target unit and release the stockpile.

I will start the device upgrades in India. The Allied forces are concentrated by Command in major cities with good supply.

HansBolter, BBfanboy, and Simonsez-

Pursuant to your joint consensus, information, advice, and recommendation, on April 2, 1942 I turned off all ground and aircraft forces upgrades. On April 3, 1942, I turned on upgrades for all ground forces in India, Australia, Tahiti, and the Gulf of Alaska. I am considering turning on upgrades for all ground forces on Ceylon.

Thank you Allied War College Cabinet members!

The Imperial Japanese Army must have all got hammered and are hung over from celebrating their capture of Bataan as their ground forces didn't attack anywhere and very few Japanese aircraft left the ground to bomb anywhere.

I am hoping they stay drunk and hung-over for months.

Australia Situation
as of
April 3, 1942

Forts

The Wyalla-Brisbane Line Bases (i.e., Whyalla, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Bourke, Toowoomba, and Brisbane) and all Bases South thereof have size three (3) forts except for the following Bases:

Whyalla: 2
Tamworth: 2
Mildura: 2
Geelong: 2
Sale: 2
Port Kembla: 2
Roto: 1

In addition, Alice Springs has a fort size of three (3).

All Forts continue to build (along with all air bases).

Ground Forces

Each of the bases on the Whyalla-Brisbane Line; each of the bases South of the Whyalla-Brisbane Line; and Alice Springs are garrisoned with an Assault Value close too or above 100.

United States ground forces have arrived, as follows:

Melbourne

F Detachment Port Service

*This Detachment will soon head for India to support Operation Land Shark.

At Wagga Wagga:

5 Artillery Regiments
4 Artillery Battalions

4 AA Regiments
5 AA Battalions

118th USAAF BF
119th USAAF BF

The following units are South of New Zealand heading for Melbourne and then to Wagga Wagga:

The 19th, 21st, 27th, and 35th Infantry Regiments, and the 102nd Combat Engineer.

*When it is believed that Australia is no longer threatened, the Wagga Wagga units will head to India to support Operation Land Shark.

At Bathurst

I Amphibious Corps Headquarters
2nd USMC Parachute Battalion
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Raider Battalions
2nd, 3rd, and 4th USMC Defense Battalions
8th Marine Regiment
2nd Marine FA Battalion
2nd Tank Battalion
USMC Engineer Regiment
101st USN BF
225th USN BF

The following units are South of New Zealand heading for Melbourne and then to Bathurst:

2nd Marine Infantry Regiment and the 1st USMC Defense Battalion.

The remaining regiment of the 2nd Marine Division (the 6th Marine Regiment) arrives in San Diego in 41 days and will head for Bathurst.

*When it is believed Australia is no longer threatened, the Bathurst units will head to Pearl Harbor to support Operation Sea Shark.

End Note

Though Australia is not exactly terribly strong, I do think that should the Japanese invade Australia, it is highly unlikely the Evil Empire would be able to capture Adelaide, Melbourne, or Sydney.

Best Regards,

-Terry
