Mountain Infantry Regiment Icon

Post by KWG »

Some Mountain Infantry Regiments have the Infantry icon and not the Mountain Infantry icon.
Do they still get the bonuses of Mountain Infantry?

Mountain type is set within the TOE. So I would expect that this controls any 'mountain' benefit.
This also controls the icon.[:D]

Is it a real unit, I cant see an historical 388th Gebirgsjaeger Rgt

There was a 388 Inf Rgt,originally part of 214 Infantry Div, attached at times to 3 & 6 Gerbirgs Div in the North Finland area.

Could be a generic unit created with a random description?

I just read a bunch about the 388th infantry regiment and it's fight in Norway (for Murmansk) in 1941. Across the Litsa. It served with the Mountain Corp

388th Infantry regiment fought in some of the roughest terrain in Europe with Mountain divisions, in a mountain corp, on mountainous terrain.

In game terms it really should be a mountain regiment.

There's two questions here:

1) Should there be a separate mountain infantry regiment OB set to Mountain type? I would guess yes unless this was just an honorific title and the units weren't really trained and equipped mountain units. If we add this, should all named mountain regiments use this OB?

2) Does the code use the mountain type (symbol) or mountain in the name to determine if the unit gets mountain benefits? Just spoke with Gary and the answer is that the unit must have the mountain type in its OB or must have ski in its name to get the mountain benefits. So for now, those units are not being treated as mountain units. I will ask that we get a new OB set up for mountain regiments so they can be made into mountain units if in fact they should get the benefits.

Its seems at least 3 Regiments were titled/untitled Mountain Infantry Regiments attached to Mountain Divisions. Had the assignment and equipment, of Mountain troops but some without the Mountaim title. Historically units did morph

known titles
388th Inf Regiment
139th Mountain Regiment
193rd Inf Regiment

Ok, thanks. Those three units are in the campaign as mountain regiments and would likely be adjusted if/when we add a new OB.

Only one of those units should be a mountain unit - the 139th. The other two were grenadier brigades.

If moved off east front(out of a Mountain division assignment) should a non-titled mountain regiment unit still be on Mountain status.

my research on these unit titles was from quick google books reading.

Not sure what you're asking, but the mountain divisions will be mountain type when in the west. These mountain regiments will just be normal infantry.

that answered. The 139th Mountain Regiment should be a Mountain Unit.
The 388th and 193rd Inf. were just attached to Mountain Divisions and would loose Mountain Unit status when reassigned.

For the purpose of WitW the 338th should be a Grenadier Regiment, Infanterie Regt 338 was renamed Grenadier Regt 338 on the 15th October 1942 and was a part of the 208 Infantry division. The same applies to the 193rd, became a Grenadier Regt on 15th October 1942 before being renamed 193th Grenadier Brigade on 30th May 1944. The 139th was a Gebirgsjager Regt but was renamed on the 8th July 1944 becoming Gebirsjager Brigade 139 with the name 'Generaloberst Dietl'.
