Subs cannot transport fuel?

Post by Subchaser »

Why subs cannot transport fuel? I ordered Sub transport TF to load fuel and assign destination to go. Next turn I see this TF on the way to the target hex, but there is no fuel on board. I’ve never transported fuel via sub transport TF before and I cannot understand is this a bug or design feature? Can someone clarify this for me, please?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a design feature. As it is, fuel is only carried at 1/2 capacity for AKs and APs; it wouldn't surprise me if subs were constrained from carrying it.

I don't know whether they actually ported it historically or not however. Anyone...?

I think you’re right, there is restriction for subs to carry a fuel, may be this is another attempt (ala penalty for Wolfpack tactics) to prevent player from using atlantic sub war tricks – U-tanker tactics in this case. I was hoping to use my ocean subs as “milk cows”.

I would imagine that a sub could carry only a small number of 40 gallon drums.

The number would be so small it could not be used to refuel anytjing larger than a fishing boat.

You can use them as milk cows as it is. Bring the sub that needs refuelling in the same hex with the sub that is full of (it's own) fuel, and click Refuel at sea.

This is routine procedure for my sub patrols sailing for Truk, Gato class subs share fuel with S-class, but Gatos are experiencing fuel shortage themselves pretty fast in this case, I was going to create specialized sub transport TF with 2-3 subs carrying fuel for the rest of the team.

Has anybody checked whether a sub can refuel from a TK or AO taskforce??

Subs can refuel from all warships and merchants with big fuel capacity, no matter in what kind of TF those ships are. AO, TK, AK, AP all can refuel subs, with fuel they carry or with their own fuel as well.

IJN subs are able to refuel AP/AK themselves  Japanese subs (those with 30000 endr.) can be used as replenishment TF for IJN surface vessels, they have large amount of excessive fuel. It’s enough to replenish a couple of CV, some CA and dozen DD, despite of the fact that subs are using diesel fuel. I think this should be patched.

I'm actually very impressed, I would never have thot of using subs as replentishment TFs. It seems a bit ahistorical (except for the "milch cows" as you described).

Would be a bit amusing tho, to see the Pearl Harbor TF all waiting in line at I=124, your friendly neighborhood refueling sub!

Refueling and Ammo replenishing has always been a little strange in the UV world, I've always wondered why they abstracted it out yet let you set the height your planes fly at. This one really looks like it will wait for WitP, with the multitude of special purpose units being added to deal with the realities of logistics.

WitP is going to replace Railroad Tycoon (logicstics 101) and just for fun you can blow stuff up too! :D

Hi All!

This reminds me that I did see a photo or two awhile back of a US Sub with many Drums lashed to the deck! Have to see if I can find it and what the circumstances were?

Later,

Subs did transport fuel...

Post by madflava13 »

From Charles A. Lockwood (should sound familiar)'s "Sink 'Em All":
"At a time when the aviation gas supply had dropped to a dangerous low on Guadalcanal, Amberjack...delivered 9,000 gallons, plus two hundred 100-pound bombs and 15 fighter pilots to Tulagi."

So even though UV uses "supply" instead of aviation gas, subs were capable of (and did historically, in limited circumstances) deliver fuel. In addition, some subs, including the Tang, modified their ballast tanks to hold diesel fuel (to be used on the outbound leg of the patrol). I suppose this could also be used to transport fuel. However the ballast tank modifications didn't come about until much later in the war.
"The Paraguayan Air Force's request for spraying subsidies was not as Paraguayan as it were..."
