Getting DOS Steel Panthers to work under Win'98

Post by Von Rom »

I need help please. I love Steel Panthers (I have SP I, II, and III), but since I bought my new computer I can't get them to run.

My system: PII 350, 128MB RAM, Voodoo3 2000 video card, Creative Live! 128 sound card, 8.4GB hard Drive.

The problem is this: I can install the games and they play with sound disabled (what fun is that?). But when I configure the sound for the game - the screen melts into a bizarre thread of colours. Is there any way you can help me? I would greatly appreciate it.

PS: It would be great if somehow you guys could up-date the Steel Panther games to Windows versions.

Well, i think you can try to select different sound drivers with setsound.
Win 9x can emulate several sound cards so you sould be able to switch between Adlib, Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Ensoniq soundscape etc. Maybe one of these will work ?

I have almost the same configuration . As far as I see it the drivers which are supported for the soundblaster live don´t work . There are some drivers for dos games but so far in the last year I have not been able to install them and work properly . Windows turns them off when you boot and under dos there is always some ini file missing . The bizzare colours seem to be a problem fo the vodoo card ! With a another graphic card I´am able to play Sp 2 and 3 but also without sound but with my vodoo in I get these colour always so what are you doing to get them work with no sound even this does not work with me . With sound I don´t even get out of setsound because my drivers are not found . Sp 1 work without sound also on my system so I think the graphic problem should be at scenario selection screen because my colours always have these green points in them . Well I know that I could´t help you but this was the first time I saw that someone else also had these problem . SSI doesn´t seem to be interested in these because they send my from one support to another until I was at Mattel where there offered suppored for learning games for kids . I use my old computer again if I want to play one of these old games but since SPWAW is out I think I will not use it very often again

O de B: Thanks I did manage to get my SP series games to work thanks to Wild Bill. It was a very easy solution.

talon: try this to get your SP games to work even with sound on. I found that the SP games now work fine with my Voodoo card:

Right click on your SP desktop icon. Then left click on "properties". Now select the "Program" tab and at the bottom in the "Run" window select "Maximized".

Then select the "Screen" tab and under "Usage" click on "Full screen".

That's it! Now configure SP in-game sound to work with your sound card and it should work perfectly! Also whenever you play SP disable your screen-saver, and make the resolution settings to be 800x600. You should have no more problems.

Well I wasn´t able to try this until today because I had the CD´s back at my parents but I want to thank you you von rom and also you Wild Bill that also these work again . Sound doesn´t work but who cares when I want good sound I play SpWaW anyway but until a version for modern conflicts comes up from you I have play these old ones . Again your support is just great at SSI they didn´t help at all in one year with this problem and they where paid and you where not so I´m going to buy your upcoming titles because these are really the better ones

Talon:

You can get your sound to work. Try this:

1) place a formatted floppy into your "A" drive. Place SP-1 in your CD ROM drive. You're going to make a boot disc that will be good for both SP-1 and SP-2.

2) Now do everything you normally do to install SP-1, but, when you get to the install screen, choose "Make boot disc". Follow on-screen instructions.

3) When it's complete - you'll have a boot disc for both SP games. All you have to do now is configure your sound Image

4) Also make sure to disable your screen saver, and set screen resolution to 800x600.

5) In the future, before you play your SP games, insert your boot disc into your "A" drive, then insert your SP game in your CD ROM, and re-start your computer. You are now ready to play!

One final comment. If for some reason after following the above instructions, and your SP games still don't work. Then try starting them from within their respective game directories (making sure to delete the desktop icons and maximizing your DOS window within the directories, as per instructions in an earlier thread in this post).

Hope it all works.
