Unable to find PW file

Post by Mike McCreery »

Good Morning Guys.

In my bleary eyed state I clicked something I shouldnt have and apparently moved a file necessary to play the game to somewhere else.

This was working this morning and in moving the turn files about I must have clicked something wrong and slid a file into a sub-folder.

The error says it cannot find the PW data. The launch icon is pointing to start the game from the 'Docs' sub-folder which makes no sense at all.

Can someone help me? Last time I had to reinstall the entire game to get it to work again. *sigh*

Nevermind....

I restored the game folder back a few months because that couldnt hurt anything and the game still would not work.

Restored the Shortcut and the path read to the main directory and the game ran fine.

How did I manage to change a shortcut path with a half asleep point and click?

Don,t know, but you can fix a shortcut by right-clicking on it, click on properties, then edit the "Start in" box, click OK when donw.

Used to be that the beta updates always wiped out the command line switches and replaced them with a windowed mode switch.

I finally learned to copy my switches to clipboard before installing the betas so I could quickly restore my preferred settings.

I am not sure whether some versions of Windows will update the shortcut if you move the executable it points to. So if you moved the actual WITP-AE program file the shortcut would be updated to point to it but the libraries it needs would still be in the original location, and the program is looking for them in the same directory it is in.
I am speculating - I do not know if Windows does in fact do auto-update of shortcuts.

I keep a .txt file with the switches. This helps because I use different shortcuts for full-screen mode than for windowed mode (I run the replay in full-screen to get good graphics performance but give orders in windowed to make it super easy and quick to switch back and forth to other applications). I also use different switches for the desktop and the laptop.

Ahem...and how exactly does a debuggerer work?

There is the version of each release that was compiled (let's call it) normally, and he compiles another version with debugging code included (that version is not released, the developers keep it). He can run that version with a debugger, which is a tool that allows him to look at individual variable values, step through troublesome spots one instruction at a time, and so on. Sometimes it allows a developer to literally catch a bug in the act.

What was it in my post that made you ask about a debugger? ("debuggerer" [:D])

Glad you caught that nuance.

It was an attempt at being cute as the term debugger made me think of the British use of the term bugger.
