Tutorial Demand

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Tutorial Demand

Is there much in demand for tutorials in this game. I am debating making some comprehensive videos

For example, I'd like to see how a good player plans a somewhat "simple" operation like operation dragoon. After having landed how you decide where to hit and how, which unit to support with assigned support units and with what kind of units...these kind of issues

I would certainly benefit. I second staying away from Husky, though I feel a more in-depth air warfare tutorial, especially in light of the patch changes, could still prove useful. But really anything.

I think there is a lot of scope for more tutorials for a game of this depth.

A few ideas off the top of my head:-

- Effective recon when playing FOW on
- Differences in play with EF box on/off
- Basic ground combat, ie how to assess where attacks likely to succeed, how to prepare a successful attack, how to defend. This is still something I'm not great at despite playing for months, I tend to over rely on CV estimates
- Naval patrol via AD vs auto-naval patrols
- Support unit and multi-role unit use, ie what to attach to different HQs and when it is better to use multi-role on-map vs SU
- Logistics (Westwall or Torch maybe good for showing these)
- Effective air strategy such as good altitudes to use, overalapping Ads etc
- General strategy tips for the grand campaign

Any of those would help newbies, so take your pick

Yeah. A logistics tutorial based on westwall would be my first choice. Then an in depth air tutorial that would cover loadouts, altitude, fatigue and some of the more nitty gritty stats. I would probably use bulge to the rhine or breakout and persuit to cover those.

I havnt done much with the grand campaign, but yesterday i managed to get major victories on battleground italy rommel attacks, both as the allies, i dont claim to be an expert through, as i dont know the stats of every single unit like really hardcore players

ground interdiction tutorial would be useful for me. I know how to set the ADs but I seem to get an awfully lot of 0s and 1s.

sea interdiction I have no problem getting 4s and up

If you are getting any (even low) interdiction from your AD, you are not having trouble setting the AD. You have managed that. What you need is a 'capabilities of a/c and optimum density/frequency' tutorial. What side are you playing, and where/when? In certain parts of Italy, as the Axis, you just wont get Interdiction of any magnitude (in fact nor will WA).

Fire up the D Day scenario. and (as WA) set up the ADs. Can you get a row of '9' map interdiction about 3 hexes deep by say 10 or 12 long along a section of French coast (with a lower set of values around that)? You should be able to, easily, with the forces available. If you can, you have the basics and we just need to discuss optimum forces/weapons/tactics for other times/areas. If you can't, we need to discuss basics.

NI, (again depending on date/side) you should be able to get 9 as well... 4 is a minimum requiement as it takes a major effort by the opposition to cancel your control (less than 4 means you can't really be sure the enemy can't challenge)

Interdiction is basically a combination of recon and overlapping interdiction directives with a small area, the higher the area, the less concentrated the bombs will be. Problem is, it takes about 3 or 4 ADS to get up to a interdiction level above 3. Its a bit painful

I think we could almost design a short and simple newbie training course for WitW, based around a few simple exercises like the interdiction one suggested by HMSWarspite. At the moment I'm writing some game mechanics tutorials in the War Room section of the forum to help newbies grasp some of the mechanics I see asked often in these forums. So with those and the Player Handbook then the new player would be ready move onto exercises in the shorter scenarios which in turn would get him ready for campaign play.

Not the way I do it, it doesn't. A single AD with 10 sqds of Tiffies (rocket armed), escorts (5 sqds usually ample by 1944), and a range '2', 7 days a week, auto pretty much all else, works fine in my book (as in 9's all round pretty much). I even set them to 'units' as well as 'interdiction'. I do tend to overlap adjacent ADs by one hex row to be certain. P47s also work. Other aircraft are available. ;)

Actually that wasn't what I was thinking but your interpretation of it sounds very good to me too.
