Soviet army/front arty

Post by Tazak »

Back to tinkering again [:D], this time looking at soviet high level arty normally found at Army or Front level, looking at how they may have been used in terms of heavy bombardment of point or area targets and having them split into batteries firing single battery fire missions doesn't seem to line up with how various sources describe their use.

I'm toying around with consolidating heavy arty into a single battalion sized unit (18 barrels) and giving them saturation fire capability. This gives the ability for heavy fire onto a single target and a coordinated area fire capability inline with how they may have been used

thoughts/comments

Army/Front arty would normally be the heavy stuff like 2S7

Agree with battalion only use: no single battery use.

Also there's usually a lot of Rocket arty at Army/Front level, including Rocket arty not often found elsewhere, eg old/obsolete but still possibly useful stuff like BM-14 or BM-24.

The Army level assets would also only be used after some prior preparation, eg a prepared assault. You'd only really see that if multiple Regiments or Divisions are allocated to the same assault mission.

The Army level assets really are the 'Thors Hammer' and take a bit of winding up before use.

Hope this helps,

The term you are looking for here is "under normal circumstances".

Anything you can imagine and a lot of things you could never imagine would have happened if this war had actually taken place.

A single battery may be the only one that survived an airstrike, didn't get stuck in a swamp, got resupplied, etc....

Make whatever action you like. It's all very likely to have happened at least once.

Good Hunting.
