Just tinkering

Post by m10bob »

Ever since cancer forced my early retirement, I keep myself busy with the darndest things, but am grateful I finally have time to do some research.

I discovered Victoria Canada had a very large Drydock which was able to accept larger ships than portrayed in the stock game.
The Queen Elizabeth was converted to troopship status there in February 1942, as the drydock was acceptable for "Paramax" sized ships as early as 1905.

Paramax is the term given to ships which will fit thru the Panama Canal.
The size of those ships are limited to the following:
Length:290 M/950 ft.
Beam: 32.3M/106 Ft.
Draft: 12.M/39.5 Ft
approx tonnage:52,000 tons.
(Sometimes allowances were made, especially if tugboats were involved).

At least one class of ship,(the American Iowas) were intentionally built to fit the canals.
BTW, currently, a third set of docks are under construction to accept larger ships at a future date.

The yard 500 meters outside Victoria being that large accepted the 82000 ton sized QE1..Yes, BB sized. It was built to avoid the necessity of going to Bremerton, (where the Warspite went due to the QE1 already being at Victoria.)..LOL

I also learned the Japanese had a small drydock in the pescadores with a refinery!.
Foochow right across from it also had a small drydock..Read up on them and gave them both ratings for my personal edited game..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dry_docks
(Be sure to check the dates and not look at modern drydocks.)

Took radiation every day for months, lost 65% of my lungs but other than reduced breathing and slower ambulation, I am cancer free at present and feel great..
Lost 40 pounds which is a win-win...Have had to adjust my lifestyle...former Ranger, 6'2 and had weighed 265, serious muscle at one time...Same height now but lighter..Still strong as a bear, just can't do anything with it,(LOL) and a cough is permanent..
Still have the heart of a 19 year old..
Sorry you went thru your ordeal General Patton....

That's rough. I hope they got it all!

Something the docs don't tell you about, but my SO had to learn the hard way is the gall bladder filters out excess cholesterol from the blood and disposes of it in the form of pellets that can clump together into gall stones. When people lose weight suddenly, a lot of cholesterol can be taken out of the blood at once and can form gall stones. My SO lost 70 pounds in a couple of months from a severe allergic reaction 30 years ago (only 1 in a million people have a reaction as bad as she did and survive) and she later developed gall stones. It took many years for it to become a problem though. Taking lecithin makes the pellets slippery and they don't stick together, slipping out of the gall bladder with little resistance.

She took lecithin daily for a while and now takes it if she's eating anything that's fatty (eating fat kicks the gall bladder into gear). With some other dietary things she avoided having gall bladder surgery. I take lecithin once a day because I found it helps my digestion in general. One of those probably can't hurt, but might help things.

And General Patton, I hope you are doing OK too.

Let's hope we won't lose any more forum members to the great beyond any time soon!
