Why is it that CS's and CVE's can launch cap but not naval attacks?

My CS's launch naval attacks all the time. Recently a bunch of overexcited young ruffians charged straight at Soulblazers fully protected CV group unescorted.

Bad pilots....very bad pilots....i'd remonstrate them severely except that most of em all went swimming rather than face my wrath

I am holding back Soulblazer's CV's and BBs with my CVE's and CVL's since he sunk all my fleet carriers some time ago. They function just fine except I need 3 CVE's to make up for one fleet CV.

So you can load up CS's and CVE's with dive and torpedo bombers and they will launch and attack fleets? I thought I read somewhere where the Long Island cannot do this so I thought it applied to them all.

A couple of CVE's along with the Long Island are used for ferrying but I put SBDs on them for ASW. I believe they can attack naval targets also. The othger CVEs come with their own fighters and bombers and can definitely function as air combat vessels.

And this applies to CS's as well?

CS's can handle only floatplanes.

But the floatplanes have the ability for naval attack and I have lost ships to them. However floatplanes are no good against CAP or fighter escort so only use them against unprotected TFs.

I have put an SBD squadron on the Long Island and used it supplement carrier strikes.

Worked fine.

Note: It was a 16 plane squadron, so it was not over the LI's capacity.

Yes SBDs work fine but I found that the squadrons increase in size and can overload the CVE. This has come up in prior threads but I had never experienced it until recently.

The marine SBD squadrons of 16 aircraft seem to work fine, and I haven't had the problem of them increasing in size. Do not use partial or derivative squadrons, or SBD squadrons rated for 18 aircraft. It has to have a maximum equal to or less than the CVE's capacity, which in the LI's case is 16.

But I usually rotate the squadrons off, only placing the squadrons on board as I need to. Have been doing this in one PBEM game for 4 months game time without a hitch.

I believe it was the Chenango - which comes with 10 Wildcats, 10 SBDs and 10 Avengers: the SBDs increased to 18 but the capacity is 31. I transferred the SBDs off and loaded a nine plane squadron of Avengers. Not what I needed but it kept the capacity within limits. Besides the avengers have good range.
