Getting past splash screen in XP

I'm running XP Pro, and just downloaded 3.3 from matrixgames.com, and when running the program it just sits at the splash screen doing nothing. I've tried various compatibility options without any luck.
So either there's some secret method to get to the main menu of the game or whatever, or I need some special compatibility options.
Anyone running on XP that can tell me what service packs and/or patches that might help?

My PC is: athlon xp 2000+, gf2mx, 512mb pc2100, intellimouse, onboard sound - any of this stuff known to cause problems?

I did
After giving up and installing Win98 on a spare drive it works ok.

Very strange happening to you as I run Win XP Pro on an IBM P4 1.6 and it runs great
