The carriers should be great. I was excited when I first read they had been ordered some years ago. F-35s have been ordered as air complement but it's a shame the MoD got rid of the Harriers in 2010.

Indeed they did. We would have been screwed without them. Truly innovative and fantastic aircraft.

I believe the US Marines bought the excess UK Harriers.

I thought the USMC Harriers were built under license by McDonnell Douglas? I know the Sea Harrier was a bit different from the USMC Harrier.

The Harriers for the RAF were close to the US model. Laser range finder instead of radar, the body was also like the American version.

The AV-8A and RAF Harrier GR.1 were pretty much the same plane. I remember the original Airfix 1/24 Harrier kit had only a few parts difference between the RAF and USMC version.

I believe it was the other way 'round. The Hawker Sidley Harrier was a purely British aircraft. The AV8-B was a McD-Doug aircraft and the British manufactured some of these under license and may have purchased some more from the US. It is true however that the Hawker-Sidely aircraft inspired the AV-8B and the lessons learned were applied. I believe the Harriers referenced earlier were either produced in Britain/BAE under license or purchased and would have been largely compatible with the Marine version.

I took a high school accelerated class that involved time spent at M-D, I don't recall there being any actual benefits from it. Just PR I think.

Must be the skis installed on the British Harriers for their ski-jump takeoff .... [8|]
