Summary of Operations 9/17/44 (continued)

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – 1.08 million supply and 127K fuel on hand (unchanged).

Current status of Terapo base – 184K supply and 10K fuel on hand (unchanged).

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea plus Rabaul.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 6 Ki-84 Frank (all air-to-air)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 1 P-47D25 Thunderbolt (listed air-to-air, possible ops)

Allied daylight port bombing raids and fighter sweeps targeting Buna did not launch this game turn, exact cause not determined. Service ratings of Allied bombers (especially 4E) a significant factor here, with many bomber squadrons stood down to maintain or repair out of service and damaged aircraft. Of the 17 Allied 2E & 4E bomber squadrons operating over eastern New Guinea (mainly Buna), about 40% of these air units (on average) are actively flying combat missions at any given time, other units stood down to recover damaged planes. Supply and aviation support available in more than sufficient quantity, bombers are operating from size 8-9 airfields, 10-12 maximum pilot fatigue – none of these factors appear significant in all the “down time”. Assigning several reserve planes to each air unit mitigates this problem somewhat but not a full solution. Aircraft display of a currently stood down squadron follows.

Image

A second wave of USAAF fighter sweeps over Lae were launched, this time from Terapo (previous turn’s sweeps from Port Moresby). Total of 250 USAAF P-47’s now operating from airfields on eastern New Guinea. Fighter sweeps launched from Terapo failed to reach Lae (mainly human operator error due to the sweep set with 70% of planes still on CAP) but many fighters intercepted a Japanese ground attack air strike on 8 Australian Division at Wau. Altitude difference between the Jap air strike and that set for USAAF fighters (30000 ft) likely a significant factor in the outcome. AAR follows.

Johnjohn,

Welcome back, though it's becoming a bit more likely I may never reach the Marianas within the timeframe of an AE campaign.

Meanwhile, back on Nauru island...

Summary of Operations 9/18/44

Central Pacific: Nauru invasion ground forces landed, then decimated in an unordered shock attack (atoll) after coming ashore. No operational elements remain in any LCU of the invasion force – virtually all elements in these units either destroyed or disabled. Current ground combat strength at 61 AV (total) for operational elements in all invasion force LCU. One LCU of the landing force (US 112 Cavalry Rgt) completely eliminated – 16 PP expended to buy this unit back from the “dead pile” for rebuilding. Evacuation of all surviving elements of invasion force LCU now ashore on Nauru is underway – this action the only alternative to complete elimination of Allied units in the event of a Japanese ground counterattack. TF of other US amphibious invasion force now enroute from Hawaii for planned landings at Makin and Mili being turned back to Hawaii – these operations now cancelled along with what is left of the Nauru invasion. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 9/18/44 – Supplemental

Results of the Nauru invasion operation above plus intelligence data (from AAR, Sigint, etc) I possess is indicating a high possibility this PBEM campaign from the Allied side is probably unwinnable. Combining the fall of China in 1943 with Japanese LCU reinforcements arriving in the Home Islands, virtually all significant Pacific island or atoll base hexes are loaded with stacks of Japanese ground forces. Add in fortification levels, shock attacks on atolls, etc – even the smallest Allied amphibious invasion resembles the siege of Buna. The historical Allied ground forces in AE are grossly inadequate (at least in numbers) to take on multiple layers of this type of Japanese defense. Given the (adjusted) 1:34 combat odds my 2 2/3 divisions (regiments counted as 1/3 division) encountered at Nauru, an amphibious invasion of Nauru with approximately 91 US divisions would be necessary to come ashore at 1:1 combat odds (not holding my breath to get 90 more US divisions added in the game) – let alone additional forces to reduce the level 5 fortifications on Nauru.

For the moment, I’m backing off from Nauru with the survivors of the Allied LCU that were sent in. I had two other landing operations moving westward from Hawaii – both were cancelled on the possibility these would also have the same results as Nauru. With the entire Pacific effectively blocked, Allied forces in India facing a similar wall of Japanese LCU in Burma – alternate avenues of approach will need to be examined and Allied forces re-arranged to do this. I hate to conclude that the 5 1/2 years (since May 2010) spent on this PBEM campaign were for nothing. In any event I can continue playing to gain additional hands-on experience with late war Allied “toys”.

I could open a discussion in the general forums but it would likely be shouted down by a horde of JFB’s. Plus it’s probably more prudent to restrain my frustration level.

Johnjohn commentary on continuing.

At the risk of saying the wrong thing, I think continuing is in order.

I have experienced the same thing in my campaign, but on a smaller scale. I took 5 divisions, 5 tank battalions, numerous support elements, on the invasion of Saipan. The AV was 4,200 to 3,950. Defenders with 6 fortifications. Initial attack very similar. Knocked fortifications to 5, took 4,500 casualties, and it looked impossible. Two weeks of daily shock attacks reduced the fortifications to zero where continued shock attacks over the next week eliminated the defenders. All 5 of the divisions are at 50% or less strength, three at 33%. No units were lost, but it was close. All units were in supply the entire time and land based planes took over for the carrier air about 10 days in.

At Pagan, a small jap airbase was causing problems. Recon showed a few base defenders, nothing significant. I tasked a division held in reserve to take it out. With a tank BN, about 440 AV in assault on atoll. Defenders turned out to be numerous including a division with AV of 600 and dug in. Lost half the division on day one. Immediately loaded survivors and escaped. Land based air eventually knocked out the airbase and the port.

What I learned from that and attacks in Burma is this: If raw AV is 10% higher than raw AV of defenders, victory will result, although it may take some time. If Raw AV is less than that, then do not attack but retreat. Victory is nigh impossible. Your abandoning the attack on Nauru falls into that category. What I did discover is that having overwhelming odds at the beginning is desirable, but having them at the end is essential. It is possible to continue attacking and winning as long as your AV does not fall to less than 110% of the Raw AV of the defenders. If it does, back off, reorganize, retrain, and then hit them again.

However, not all this is possible in island warfare. Support requires hulls that may not be available or are too vulnerable to utilize on an invasion beach. Carrier support may not be sustainable for long periods either. So that needs to be taken into consideration too.

Here is where I stick my neck out. One, it looks like more attackers are needed to hit and stay against this augmented defense of Pillar's. That means concentration of forces on one target at a time. Two, is Nauru even strategically necessary? It is an exposed location that cannot be supported except from Ocean Island which offers little prospect as a base. I found that skipping it makes sense. The real desirable bases are Alingalaplap, Kwajalene, Roi-Namur, Wotje, Jaluit, Makin, and Tarawa. Nauru can be built up to a 5/3 base, but it is still isolated. In one thread I read a couple of years ago, the allied player attacked from the south of Tarawa, turning several of the dot atolls clustered together to the south, but still in air range, into air bases, providing a safe place for allied shipping and carriers to operate. Tarawa and then Makin were assaulted (and taken).

The allies in Sept 44 have sufficient divisions and tanks and field artillery and engineers to mount assaults on those two islands. 15 divisions should be available along with all the CVs, CVLs, and numerous CVEs to make an invasion a success. Hit the target with 5 divisions and follow up as necessary. Then hit the next one. Build them up and you are in business. You only need Alingalaplap or the combo of Kwaj and Roi-Namur to control the whole island group. WIth Makin and one other base in the Marshalls, you can bomb all the other island bases out of business. And there will be no resupply or reinforcement or evacuation. It is amazing what allied air and sea power can do with a base of operations in the middle of the enemies "rice bowl."

Having said all this, I think you can make something of the situation if you give it a sustained effort and hit only what you must to control an area. It will not take long for the enemy to use up its supplies. Once that happens no more flights, no movement, no further resistance. So opportunities to defeat Pillager still remain. Have courage. You will take significant losses, but in the end Pillager loses more.

So hang in there. Keep up the pressure on the enemy, focus on only what is necessary for securing an area, and have fun.

For what it is worth, John.

PS--12,500 casualties on the first day. Pillager is going to be a tough nut to crack.

I have to echo the comments above. I'm not that experienced with the Allies and in my current PBEM I'm only into Oct. 42 playing them, so take my comments accordingly.

Pillar may have garrisoned a number of bases heavily, but I'd ask why are you then attacking them? 800 AV on Nauru Island, why attack it? I'd bypass it as it has zero significance and hard for the Japanese to support anyway. Even Buna I might have bypassed as that's a pretty heavy investment by the Japanese. There's no way he can have those types of numbers on every base in the Pacific. Find the lower hanging fruit and use that to weaken the overall support that can be provided to the stronger defensive positions.

I need to go back and catch up on your AAR, but there must be bases you can take that have much weaker defences? I'd avoid the heavily defended bases and look to choke them through isolation, rather than taking them head on. What's the state of the navy, do you have dominance? If so, use that to your advantage and bypass these strongpoints.

Don't give in, just change your focus. If anything, you are getting valuable experience to apply to your next amphibious operations.

I can imagine your frustration at what has transpired, but don't let that ruin it for you. Adapt and tackle the problem from another angle, hit 'em where he isn't until you get your mojo back. [8D]

+2 ..

The Allies must go where the IJ are not and SIGINT gives a lot of data to determiine where not to go ...

However, an atoll stacked to the max does offer the opporunity to attrite .. the more mouths to feed the more xAK's that have to take goods there to feed them .. I believe in 1944 this offers the opportunity for submarines to earn their pay ...

Simply trying to smash the IJ does not work for 3 reasons in my opinion .. even if you had unlimited forces ..

1. Victory conditions The Allies must advance at a loss rate at best of 2:1 and if you are behind to start a much better IJ:Allied ratio // else AV is hard to obtain.
2. Time .. The Allies must achieve AV in a certain time period .. the time it takes to smash strongholds is to the advantage of the IJ
3. Supply .. this is the IJ's weakest point in my opinion. The problem is the effects takes time to show but once the critical level is achieved .. things go south in a hurry .. smashing strongholds rather than use these strongholds against the IJ helps him by default use his supply more efficienly .. you want the opposite .. you want the IJ to make huge mistakes in his allocation of supplies.

I continue to follow ...

Thanks all,

My original strategic premise with going after Nauru Is was (1) the first step of a northward breakout from my South Pacific theatre area along the axis Nauru – Kusaie Island – Ponape – (possibly) Truk and (2) isolating Jap positions in the Marshalls and Gilberts from main Japanese-controlled areas using this axis of advance. The end result of my recent Nauru action making this approach somewhat less than feasible.

The ongoing siege of Buna was basically unavoidable – with Pillager having 20 Japanese LCU in Buna, this was simply too big to ignore (bypass). Containment of Jap known LCU forces inside Buna would require an Allied ground force large enough where a significant number of Allied LCU would be diverted from the main effort in SW Pacific area at least for a long period of time if not the remainder of the campaign.

The fall of China in this PBEM campaign has a huge impact (though only one component behind the current situation). I’m of the view that China is too easy in AE for Japanese players and the status quo in AE with regard to China considerably alters overall play balance in the game (some JFB in the forum needing to realize two sides are playing this game). However, I digress from the main topic here…

Sqzmylemon makes a good point on attacking heavily defended Jap bases. I’ve tracked Pillager’s Jap LCU order of battle from the start of the campaign using AAR and Sigint report information – providing what’s probably an 80% or so accurate picture of how he’s arranged Japanese defenses. In general… Pillager has built up a defense in considerable depth with nearly every Pacific island/atoll base of significant size occupied by a stack of Japanese LCU at whatever fortification level “the market can bear”. A similar situation exists facing Allied forces in Burma where a large Japanese land force (40+ known LCU) awaits. All the obvious approaches for large-scale Allied advance blocked.

I’ve started looking at alternative strategic options. “Small ball” may be the option for Allied advance in the South and Central Pacific areas – take what the opposing defense gives you. Dot hex bases and small islands.

In SW Pacific theatre area, the sea passage between northern Australia and the south coast of New Guinea is a possibility for funneling an Allied advance into the eastern DEI with a minimum amount of redeploying forces. Merauke (south coast of New Guinea opposite Wewak-Aitape-Hollandia) plus dot hex bases at Groote Eylandt and Wesel Islands east of Darwin are all Allied-controlled and could be quietly built with size 7-8 airfields at each location. The Allied base at Horn Is already built up to maximum size.

At this point, I intend to complete the taking out of Buna though my plans for an Allied ground advance do not extend far into the northern coast New Guinea – capture of Lae optional. Planned Allied amphibious attacks on Milne Bay and nearby islands to apply some leverage against Rabaul and also as the first stage of bypassing Rabaul will go as scheduled (this originally intended to occur immediately following the Nauru operation) – Allied LCU now fully prepped for Milne Bay and surrounding locations.

Up to this time, my plans had been to completely bypass the Solomons except for what was required in an Allied advance around Rabaul. Though a “small ball” strategy using invasions of dot hex and smaller bases in the Solomons may be of value here. The base complex Pillager has built at Tulagi-Guadalcanal will certainly be skipped though I plan to take dot hex and small bases surrounding this complex.

Allied strategy for this campaign in the India-Burma remains somewhat a dilemma given a direct land advance into Burma would likely turn into a quick stalemate. A possibility here is a face-off along the India-Burma border plus creation of a mobile force of selected Allied LCU plus British naval and amphibious ship resources to employ elsewhere (DEI?).

A really far-fetched option would be a northern campaign. Pillager has appeared to dump significant numbers of Japanese LCU reinforcements arriving in the Home Islands into Pacific bases (and elsewhere).

I’m facing with (fixed historical) Allied ground forces an IJ Army in both the Pacific theatres and Southeast Asia that Pillager has heavily reinforced with transfers from China plus LCU reinforcements moved out of the Home Islands – likely to the extent where Pillager’s Japanese ground forces hold a numerical advantage. That’s the probable bottom line. The KB is a (relatively minor) Allied headache – even with Pillager probably using KB as a fleet-in-being as long as he can avoid using it in battle, I still have to account for it. I have some opening in the air war – though plane serviceability and stingy numbers of replacement pool planes have required me to keep older plane types in front line service and keeping everything under a careful “budget”. Trained pilots (with a small bottleneck for USN fighters) for all Allied nationalities are available in ample numbers.

No easy choices and it definitely sounds like you are up against a solid defence. There's a weak point somewhere, there always is. Large garrisons scream out large supply requirements to me. Choke off that supply and bomb what's currently at these bases, if you can, and see if that doesn't start causing cracks to appear in the dam.

I'll be following to see your progress, but I think once you look at things differently it will all come together. Everything Japan does comes at a cost and if you figure out how to capitalize you may be just fine. Bear in mind, I've never faced what you are yet and I may just be talking out my ass here. [:D]

I considered mentioning the northern option, but it is really tenuous at best. Bases can be built up, and the Aleutians can support each other, but the bases are few and far between spread out in a line. All must be developed and supply is challenging given the weather penalties. Operations suffer as well. Anything you do up there to grab something from which to move out is going to require every flattop you have. The jap dots and small bases facing the Russians are just too far away.

As for Burma, the real question is where are the garrisons? In the real war, the Brits moved down to take Ranee Island as a base to hop off from. Its 120 west or south, depending on map orientation, of Pagwe. If there is a soft underbelly in there, that may be how to reach it. One thing I learned in my campaign is that nothing moves quickly in the jungle. But even a 3 to 5 division thrust would quickly be quelled against 40 LCUs. When I went south from Central Burma, I was able to secure Pagwe fairly easily. I could not punch through the very deep defenses at Tuangoo. That garrison remained in place as I went around it, took Rangoon, Pegu, and Moulimain, cutting off that garrison from Bangkok. It is trying to escape through the jungle to the RR in Thailand, and it will make it, but it has taken four months and no one has reached the RR yet. The jungle and mountains make movement difficult. In any case, I think keeping the enemy out of India is the better course than trying to advance on that front.

So what does Pillager have in the DEI? Lots of soft targets there. Maybe a push from Columbo is possible. Even if so, it would only be a sideshow.

I like the southern approach to Sorong end of PNG. That is a real possibility. Pillager cannot get there to interfere with much if at all. I did take the dot north of PM and then ran an Army over the mountains into the Lae area that way, but it took forever. The army proceeded through the area to Hansa Bay, but it was two divisions and several other battalion level units. Engineers developed the bases as the ground force moved on. The mass defense at Buna was overcome, eventually, but that attack only was happening to keep the enemy from moving north to reinforce against the 2 div et al bunch crawling trough the mountains.

If Pillager has denuded the home islands to beef up the circle of defense, he is a fool. You get some armor on the northern end of the main island and you are in Tokyo before you can spit. My guess is he may have moved a few units forward, but I would not leave Japan essentially naked. Japan is not that far from Seattle. It would be too easy to cut off the outer ring and just go for the jugular. If I were...I would not remove the home island defense under any circumstances. You have the intelligence. What does it tell you?

Soooo...it seems that Nauru was a bust. There are still other opportunities. Move fast, if you can, for speed is in your favor. Pillager cannot reposition with any speed. Find a soft spot, hit it, and watch him squirm. And keep moving. That will scramble his defense and give you opportunities that this static approach is denying. You can do it. Just throw the box away and use that magnificent mind God gave you. You will be surprised at what possibilities for victory still remain.
