March / April 1942 - Australia invaded

Japan has grown bold - since the USA carrier fleet was til the last turn halved, and only this turn the 3 missing carriers got their airplanes; but they're to move to Pearl Harbour or Pago Pago first, and be reorganized.

In the while Japan has leaped into Brisbane first and next they invaded the proximity of Melbourne.

US has brought a Garrison in the far west of the Australia, planning to rail it somewhere where required and needed!

March / April 1942 - Arabian Sea a Thousand and one Nights

The Royal Navy, confident of its superiority sallied forth from Cape Town to put in security the eastern approaches of Afrika, and their convoy pipeline to India; and at once threaten the Axis pipeline to Iraq.

Spreading lesser naval assets over other sea zones, the British Navy masses in front of Aden, with what you see in the screenshot; a convoy, 2 BBs and 1 CA at the 0, and 6 cruisers at the 2 box.

The Italians have presence of Sparviero's already, 2 of them. One is promptly aborted by the Fulmars embarked. But then the Brits do not seem to accomplish anything.

The Regia Marina sails out to react - but in the immediate the fleets do not find each other.

At the third Axis impulse though (Impulse #9 - the one just played) the Regia Marina finds, and finds good. They obliterate the Royal Navy ships in the 0 box (Keep in mind, at the present the Regia Marina had 9 ships, 5 of them Littorio class BBs).
The British are quite unlucky with their saves (failing them all). Meanwhile the Italian cruiser Cadorna - labelled to be sunk, passes its save and is only damaged!

The Axis had declared war to Russia in this impulse, so the Brits elect to remain in the hope to sink that precious Axis convoy holding up the supply in Iraq. Then the Axis defences in Iraq would be in serious trouble.

And the Brits find the Italians, but so it happens for the Italians too. There are only 2 surprise points for the Italians - and they have found too with the Sparviero remaining. The Fulmars eagerly jump on the Italian naval torpedo bomber, shooing it from its protection duty and spotting. The Swordfishes dive in - craving a convoy victim but the Italian anti air makes the strike forfeit.

The Brits persists, at least there is no more airplane for Italy, and they can find with 1-3 (due to Convoy presence and the Fulmar). But Italy finds the Brits again. Pants down.

This time is the cruiser squadron, devoid of air cover, to feel the might of the thundering guns of the Littorios.
Three British cruisers pay visit to the bottoms of the Indian Ocean, meanwhile the Cadorna explodes in a blaze of glory.

The British are persistant, the Soviets have an amount of bombers there, and the Italians have litterally no air cover nor protection. Only a one shot one marvel supply unit in zone.

But the Italians find once again, electing to finish the cruisers remaining in the 2 box. A glimpse of luck comes to the Brits as this time their few ships manage to pass their saves and limp away damaged.

The Brits now have only the carrier block with BBs and some cruisers in the 1 box, and the Italians are all packed at the 4. Both sides stay - but this time no findings.

March / April 1942 - Iraq

At Tabriz there is another Soviet bomber too - with 3 Tactical factors.

Below the Italian INF 4-3 there is the Supply Unit.
Below the Italian ARM-HQ there is an Anti-Air unit.

Soviet forces are mainly poor - except one INF-HQ and a 6-4 Siberian.
But surely they've enough troops to be a threat to the few Italians there. Especially as the Italians would struggle to replace any loss meanwhile Soviets have an easy access to reinforcements)

Bear in mind there are 3 Japanese units in Persia at Busher.

March / April 1942 - I wish it was snowing

As the topic says, I'd have wished for Snow, but the weather did not played nice with me.

This was one of the two harsh decision of this impulse, the other is Japanese.

To declare war or not? With Snow I was even caressing the idea of firing the only O-Chit Germany has to assault Leningrad with the Finns; but that was not the case. No snow so...

Another one was if to paradrop Sebastopol or Kerch. I am not sure to have made the right decision (given Sebastopol was also risky, being a +12 only). Kerch would have been ensured pratically due to only the notional being there. It's a resource too. Which is good.
In the end I opted for a weekly defended Sebastopol and get rid of the fortification. Probably a waste of Paras though!
Also that is further away from Turkey, but as I ended up with 1 MNT corp in Iraq, it means I cannot ship via air 4 corps in Krimea (well not 4 German corps!).

For the rest the Germans attacked head down the borderland guard of the Soviets, including some low odd attacks from the Romanians which costed to the Germans an INF-Div and a disrupted 7-4 INF.

I should have started the attack early on but some troops in Iraq were not ready.
Also the Axis dealt with a partisan in Spain, for how not too relevant that is!

March / April 1942 - Forgetting things around...

Just showing how I masterfully forgot to move Argentina. IF the turn ends and the W.Allies go first the next turn it will be toast for free.

I am biting my hands.

Alas a computer game denies the full perspective a tabletop one gives. But hey, we want to save space and not keep a room busy with maps, tables and whatnot for months?

March / April 1942 - I should read rules better

The game here was in New Zealand Coast ... meanwhile the Japanese were invading Australia, the USA reacted bringing a task force in that sea zone, where only a Zero and a Naval Bomber were.

The US carriers manage to get away all the Japanese planes, but remained without escort there; at the 2 box!
Clearly a bait - but a bait the Japanese bit.

The Japanese send in 6 cruisers - which fail to find the carriers. They litterally had no escort, 4 points of surprise it would mean the cruiers were gunning straight at carriers loaded with planes. Alas it was not to happen.
Seen the failure of their interception, the Imperial Command dispatches two other Zero, fresh, squadrons to base in closeby isles to provide air cover on the 3 box, where the cruisers are.

The US react in force, bringing in lots of carriers with half a dozen of cruisers. The Zero dogfight to their bitter end to protect the cruisers - with both Zeros being shot down for 2 US fighters - and then two Japanese cruisers are sank, one damaged and the remaining three flee to the safety of Rabaul.

Now this is where I should know the rules better. I thought the GARR in Canberra would go OOS if I cut the convoy pipeline with Australia. So I take a Naval Action with the Japan and not a combined one.

But the IJN spreads around - sinking 2 UK convoy in the Indian Ocean; 3 of the US out of Pago Pago despite the Catalina intervening to their protection - leaving Pago Pago temporarily out of supply.
But mostly the Japan Carrier Fleet - well these at avail - sail to meet the US carrier task force. They get only in the 1 box against the 2 box of the US, but Japan has airplanes with range 7 which gives a +2 to the search. Both sides find with 1-3.

Ironically, they find each other. A frontal combat of airplanes with no surprise; but the best fighter the US can field is a 4 air factor. And then they've many bombers with 1 or 2 air to air factor. Japan has 2 Zero with 6 factors.
The dices are not favoring the US either, which see every round a Japan bomber cleared through; and out of 4 rounds 3 are hits on their planes and then 1 aborted.

Aliked Midway except the last moment, the Japan naval pilots have fended off all the US assaults on the carriers. And all of the Japan bombers got on the US task force.
The US activate their death ray ... ehm I mean, they fire with their unfair amount of AA, obliterating one carrier plane of Japan.
In the end Japan picks a carrier which has a CVP on, sinking it. The US elects quickly to have the second and last destroyed target a puny cruiser. The last hit is for damage, the Japan picks the last carrier with a CVP on - the US selected one of the slow carriers to park their best plane on, assuming the Japan would have to choose between sinking (or trying to) a 6 moving carrier or their 5 naval factor CVP.

In the end Japan has lost much - but USA did lose more.
If that "more" is enough for their supreme production capability, that is a tale only time can tell.

March / April 1942 - Destroyed & Repair Pool

Meanwhile I am going to sacrifice a lamb to the gods of dices for one or two more impulses - much to do for the Axis ...

An Argentina to protect.
A Canberra to assault.
A Yugolavia and Finland to align.
A Soviet Russia to invade.

I show you the pools of what has been destroyed and what has been damaged (yes the Argentina Navy sailed out once again and the old BBs of Germany tried to raid the Atlantic!)

March / April 1942 - Outcomes

The turn continued for two more impulses, one Axis and one W.Allies.

The W.Allies were bold, the Royal Navy carriers in Arabian Sea launched a port attack on the Littorio class BB that was parked - aborder - in Aden, along with the Trieste Cruiser.
Surprisingly enough the Regia Marina apparently developed radars, and installed one at Aden.
The Italians get 10 surprise point, and their anti air blast away the interloper of their air space!

The Japanese will attempt the same, with almost similar results, at the Fiji. In the end none suffers real damage (as the US ships were disorganized already).
On the other hand the US scores a neat success in the Pacific - the sinking of a convoy which was vital for Japan to supply their armed forces in Australia (and subsequently attack Canberra, defended by only a disorganized Garrison of USA.)

The Bomber Command of UK performs one another run over Lille, met fiercely by the Luftwaffe, the mission is aborted (the bomber got aborted) and many Spitfires were gunned down (1 unit was shot down).
Until now the "strategic bombing" campaign costed Germany 2 FTRs and quite some production points; the RAF lost 1 LND3, 1 FTR2, and 1 Pilot. Ultimately the RAF has gained a few BPs there.

The operations for Barbarossa are severely hindered by the mud, Kiev remains in Soviet hands - and the Soviets produce 36 in this turn. It's a lot and as you can see there is plenty of their INF and GARR coming the next turn, along with 2 (accursed, from my perspective) excellent fighters.

May / June 1942 - After 2 Axis Impulses and 1 of W.Allies, Ostfront!

The W.Allies rerolled for the Initiative, starting with a +2, and lost it!
They could have marched into Buenos Aires if that was the case.

With typical unluck for the Axis, the first impulse of May / June is bad weather. It snows.
And mostly it eats double impulse move.
Storm all over the seas.

The German nonetheless align Finland, which deploy to take with 1 unit the undefended Murmansk and sweeps from the Frozen Ladoga Lake to attack Novgorod from north along spearheads of the German advance, now moving properly with speed.
Leningrad factories are locked down now.

Kiev finally is seized but its factory was evacuated. Vitbesk factory is not as lucky and is captured intact.
The Soviets are railing factories to Baku at the present.

With the 2nd Axis impulse (#5) the good weather arrives and not wanting to waste more time, Germany fires their O-Chit in Manstein to uncork the Dnepr defence line.

In the north minor advance is made, the Beresina and Smolensk are formidably defended and the Germans placed their eggs in the south.
Von Manstein though delivers - meanwhile Italian planes ship a MNT corp in Krimea to attack the defender screening Sebastopol. The division that was shipped in earlier by a Ju52 is the sacrificial lamb, keeping the MNT and 2 PARA disrupted at the cost of a Soviet INF.

The Dnepr is crossed in two different spots, allowing the encirclement of 2 INFs and an AA that was spent.
Dnerp-City too is assaulted and seized, and the Soviets have a few troops in risk of encirclment in the southern part; few of them have been bombarded.

But the Luftwaffe is struggling - as per usual - to keep up with the land front moving ahead.

May / June 1942 - Colombia

The US keep bullying the helpless nations of South America for their resource.

An expedition led by a Panama Cavalry claimed the oil rigs in Colombia, and was promptly counterattacked (as it was disrupted and OOC) by the local drug-warlord (were they present already?) and nationalist armed forces of very improvised nature.

They obliterated each other into oblivion.

May / June 1942 - Iraq

The front is a bit static. The Soviets attacked by the end of March / April the Iraq MIL unit and destroyed it.
Italy promptly rebuilt the MIL unit - as it's a unit that does not rely on supply coming from oversea, where the UK can threaten it!

Otherwise the front is very static, both sides too weak to enterprise an offensive without a good degree of risk.
Soviets technically can replace losses with ease, but they need troops elsewhere at the present!

In the Arabian Sea, the Italians seem to truly have developed a radar.
In the first impulse there was Storm, and the UK left a cruiser in the sea for presence at the Stay at Sea phase. Italy nailed it down.
UK sent a new cruiser this time. It was found as well, and sank promptly by the 5 Littorios and escorts battlesquadron.

The Japan has sent their Zero Reisen-Kai in Ceylon, which can get to the 3 box of the sea - if they actively can place it. That will be a good enough air cover for the 2 Sparvieros operating from Aden.
UK now has 3 carriers and many naval assets in Cape Town.

May / June 1942 - Pacific

The Japan started the turn - and moved cruisers to secure their shipping lands.
It's all stormy.
The US sends in submarines - but they do not find - and raiding / security forces around.

Once the Japan turn is on again, they go to assault Canderra. Japan restored the supply and brought in all its carrier-plane weight to bomb the defenders (now the 6-1 GARR and the 1-1 Australian Garrison).
Yamamoto gives HQ support - and the attack succeeds with a lucky roll. Not even losses. (It was +7 only)

Worth a shot for Australia.

Also the Japanese, suddenly having fair weather everywhere, launched their naval planes - and found a cruiser squadron of USA. One cruiser got sank, the rest fled away quickly being devoid of any air cover.

The last operational US Carrier (as per having still planes on) is cruising with escorts in New Zealand Coast. Japan organized too a task force to intercept it, but alas it failed in its intent. The US found first the Japanese, there was an old cruiser alone in the box 3 that got promptly sunk.
Then the Japanese found the US, but their carrier planes, despite the inferiority, aborted the Japanese NAV - and then scooted away leaving the Japanese Zero just flying in circles unable to bomb and sink the carrier.

Allied Impulse #4

The Wasp port strike Porto Vila, the Japanese cruiser Kitakami is damaged and sent to the shipyard docks for repairs to come.

The Bomber Command goes again to Lille. Two fighters per side dogfight, and this time the RAF emerges victorious, shooting down the FW190 with 7 air factor, and with their bomber being cleared to the objective.
But the pilots of the Bomber Command deem a heavy armament factory what in truth is a big farmstead, achieving really nothing as they bomb cows and cultivations.

The Soviet Air Command launches bombers, unopposed, in Iraq. But the Italians are well dug in, and the bombing of the Soviets does not achieve any meaningful result.

End of May / June 1942

The turns ends at the 3rd Axis impulse, a total of 5 impulses played. That pretty much delivers an ensured win in the Allied hands.

The Soviets gets 12 new land units, pratically evening out all the losses they suffered, and the W.Allies gain the initiative.
A lucky shot could have been for Germans to move first, but the Soviets seem to go first so they can move off - and go defend where required.

The W.Allied player complained that he did not conquered Colombia and Argentina (heroically the Argentina resisted in Buenos Aires, losing the CAV - then the Argentina MIL attacked a Brazil INF, both units got destroyed. The suicidal attack at +0.6 was aiming to destroy the MIL to rebuild it in Buenos Aires.)

Here the destroyed pool.

Ostfront - End of May / June 1942

Where it is pratically a game over unless I get a very very long July / August turn.

End of May / June - Coming Production

The Soviets nailed one another Fighter with 6 air factor!
On the other hand, US fighters are not that good in comparison.

For Jul / August the productions - before any potential disaster, strat bombing, etc is:

USA - Produces 75 BPs, passes 4 to UK. Neats 71.
UK - Produces 23, gains 4 from US. Neats 27. UK could manage to open up the Indian convoy way and produce some extra bits.
Soviets - Producing 18 at the present. They'll be certainly be attacked (gaining +0.25 multiplier). They'll certainly rail move factories, and could lose some factory or resource (not that they're short of resources at the present).

Japan - Producing 30.
Germany - Producing 49, passes 4 to Italy. Neats 45.
Italy - Producing 14, gains 4 from Germany. Neats 18.

Axis production therefore is 88 - before modifiers of sort.
Allied production is 116 - but Soviet output can fluctuate heavily.

This at the start of Jul / Aug.

Extra (good) news: An US TRS got destroyed, it was parked in Australia and upon conquest ...

Start of Jul / Aug 1942 - After 1 impulse each

Argentina fell.
The US rolled 18 in their assault, and despite the newly rebuilt MIL unit for Argentina, Buenos Aires fell to the capitalists superpowers.

That seals the end of the Argentina, and their navy currently has some issues sailing out to save themselves. (Germany is quite busy in Soviet Russia!)

Start of Jul / Aug 1942 - After 1 impulse each

The Soviets push in Iraq, having total air supremacy (2 bombers vs 0 Axis air units) the Soviets bomb, disrupt and attack the Rome MIL unit, that is butchered.
No losses for the Soviets (another 18 rolled, plus the dice modifiers!)

Italy, taking a combined action, arranges meager defences against the coming onslaught from the Bolshevik forces, which revealed to be much more efficient than expected!
