Most excellent!!!

I must make comment on two sections as my information differs somewhat.
7.  Naval reaction is not dependent on the TF's movement orders.  A TF with "remain on station" orders but also given a reaction range, will react and override the remain on station order and return home after the reaction (which is why one should never give a reaction range to a remain on station TF) whereas other movement orders (eg patrol, follow, waypoints) would see the TF react and subsequently return to its previous movement orders.  In all instances a naval reaction move is possible only against a detected enemy TF, the higher the DL, the more likely reaction will result.

A clarification.

When discussing surface combat reactions, Don Bowen made it quite clear that Remain on Station overrides the React setting. My experience both before and after that revelation bears that out. His disclosure immediately cleared up problems getting surface combat TFs to react.

Carrier reaction does override Remain on Station at times, as you say.

I'll see your clarification and raise you a clarification.

Completely correct to point out that Don Bowen has in the past has often stated that "remain on station" and a reaction range are incompatible orders. His terminology has usually been "incompatible", "contradictory", "nullify each other" and similar. But ... [;)] ... he never stated that the remain on station setting overrides the reaction setting. In fact it is the other way around which is why the two settings are incompatible.

IOW, a TF set to remain on station but with a reaction range set to >0, can react away from it's stationary location. In doing so it clears the remain on station setting and once the reaction is over, will return to it's home port, not the previous stationary hex. There are many threads where Don Bowen states this but I provide the following one where he confirms your earlier statement in that thread was correct.

tm.asp?m=3292583&mpage=1&key=react&#3293058

Look for post #9 dated 25 March 2013 from Don Bowen.

2.  Due to technical coding issues, there is no reaction towards a sub TF.  An ASW TF will not react towards a detected sub TF.  The ASW TF may engage in combat with a detected sub TF if it comes across it in a hex traversed during the ASW TF normal or patrol movement path but it will not deviate from it's normal or patrol movement path towards the sub TF.

This surprises me. On a number of occasions I have seen ASW TFs pursue subs well outside of their patrol areas (and not on their way to/from patrol/port). I don't know what mechanism is at play but I have seen it a number of times.

See my response to rustyi and comments re Lokasenna's point about ASW not prosecuting an ASW attack. Players don't normally get to see the actual hex by hex movement of a TF so it is very difficult to see whether an ASW has really deviated from it's scheduled path, and if it has deviated, non prosecution of an ASW attack outside of the regularly scheduled travel path would be consistent with what Don Bowen has said. Bear in mind that an ASW TF which returns fire outside of it's scheduled travel path is not operating within the naval reaction constraints.

Of course if someone can document a specific case where an ASW TF reacts to a sub TF and then initiates an ASW attack on a sub TF in a hex outside of the scheduled travel path, then either a bug exists or there has been some recoding done since mid 2009 which has escaped my (and Don Bowen's) attention.

Not overlooked.[:)]

Publicly reacting to it is of no interest to third parties.

Agreed.

The problem is I saw this several times at a point in my current PBM when I had no idea it was/would be an item of controversy. The state of play now is such that IJN subs are not very active in Allied ASW TF playgrounds. It might be some time, or another game, before I can capture such an event.

But perhaps one of the others who reported seeing this will be able to do so?

Look for post #9 dated 25 March 2013 from Don Bowen.

My discussions with Don were in early 2011. I can fix the date as before May 23, 2011 because that is the date on the text I saved (to my local drive) of a surface intercept primer that I posted on the forum and on the Wiki. In the post you cite, Don says:
The two orders are contradictory and the game will ignore "Remain on Station" if "React" is ordered.

But that is completely flipped around from his statements two years before and - more importantly - contrary to actual results. Don simply stated it wrong, is my present understanding. Conduct tests. I was unable to conduct surface intercepts with Remain on Station, regardless of React. But by using Retirement Allowed with or without a Patrol zone set, I am able to do so.

The upshot is, for conducting surface intercepts you should advise your opponent to use Remain on Station while you use Retirement Allowed (with a Patrol zone set as needed)! [:D]

Bear in mind that an ASW TF which returns fire outside of it's scheduled travel path is not operating within the naval reaction constraints.

In the cases in my own game that I was referring to the ASW TFs in question ended their turn outside of their patrol area, in some cases significantly outside, and not in any way on a path to or from home port. So, yes, without doubt I have seen more than one ASW TF 'chase' a sub outside of its regularly scheduled path. What I held back on stating, because I do not recall firmly enough, is whether I observed ammunition expended. That would require knowing how much the TF had the turn before. Nor do I recall if there was a combat report entry. As I mentioned in my prior post I did not know this was an item of any controversy and so did not pay special attention to capture data. I'll be on the lookout!

I think you will find that ASW react to subs has been re-coded in DaBabes scenarios.

In DaBabes scenarios I’ve seen an ASW task force with reaction range set leave its patrol zone to go
After a detected enemy sub TF when an attack happens. It won’t break the patrol zone.
When the sub contact is cleared the ASW TF will return to its set patrol zone.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen this behavior in a standard scenario.

This can be checked easy in the DaBabes Guadalcanal scenario.
Set it up as a Head to Head.
In this scenario, there is a Japanese sub TF near Townsville at game start.
Give it a patrol zone and send some Allied ASW destroyer TFs, with reaction set to 6, to the area and set their patrol zones close to, but not into, the subs patrol zone. Then send a destroyer ASW TF into the subs patrol zone to provoke an attack. The other TF’s may react into the attack hex if the attack happens.

If you move the Japanese sub patrol out of the area the Allied TF’s will return to their set patrol zones.

What scenario are you using? DaBabes or a standard scenario?

I don't think any of the factors you name are editable. They're in the EXE, which no scenario alters. I think.

That could be true, if it is then I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing.
The reaction must not be to the enemy sub but to the attack.

There must be a "ride to the sound of the guns" routine that I'm not aware of.

It's also possible the 'problem in the code' mention that Alfred cited might be that an ASW TF will move (does react in that sense) to the sub, but not actually attack it (does not react in that sense). We need to be on the lookout for fresh examples and capture as much data about them as possible.

Could the sub have moved through the ASW TF hex and the ASW TF follow it without an attack occurring in the ASW TF hex? Don't know.

Yes.

This is probably what occurred.
As I mentioned in my prior post I did not know this was an item of any controversy and so did not pay special attention to capture data. I'll be on the lookout!

I don't think there's a there, there, but just in case I'll pay better attention as well.

I've actually always wondered if the message still gets displayed, but my TF isn't actually moving. Because I'll see the sub it is supposedly reacting to in the replay, but the ASW TF will remain in the hex it was always in.

I also say that because every KB (4 or 5 of them) I've annihilated was beyond his land based searches and within mine.

A situation to be avoided by the Japanese player if possible.

You can't avoid it (in the first couple of months), but as soon as he can assemble 4 CVs you're crazy if you don't. I think you're at great risk if you even do risky behavior in front of 3 American CVs.
Just don't do it. I understand that the Japanese are already in the hole by December 8, but setting up Midways for the Allied player to exploit is foolish. Don't do it.

I don't understand this post. Must of had too much Pinot Grigio. You must understand that we have not yet discovered ethanol (on Gorn) but I have discovered it here and my system doesn't always process it as smoothly as yours do.
