Area names consistency - Poland in particular

Post by szmike »

Kracow - that's quite a polglish language. ;-)

On the map there are historical land names all over (I'm no expert on Hungarian areas mind you :-) ), but Poland, where city names are used instead (and with above outstanding example of language mix I've never seen, even in Paradox games where Polish lands are named quite awfully).

Area Kracow depicts should be really named Lesser Poland, which is historical name. Also there should be Mazovia instead of Warsaw and Cuiavia instead of Masuria. The latter is a name of East Prussian land added to Poland after WWII.

For a historical game it's quite innaccurate naming imho.

Poland is inactive area in WITW. Eastern areas to be reviewed in WITE2.

I'm using this as a guide as WitE2 has regions set as data not just maptext. I appreciate that there can be some sensitivities in what is appropriate and I'm willing to be influenced.

The map you use is OK as such, but it doesn't quite fit in the game imho.

It probably depends on what the goal is really, if it's the naming of the time used by 3rd Reich, then Cracow District, Radom District and such would be much more fitting.
But then in other parts of Europe names of historical lands are used e.g. Burgundy, Lombardy, Thuringia, so it's different naming convention.

At the very least as city names have local spelling and land names English, it could be simply Cracow.

It might seem I'm nitpicking, but as language purist it bothers me. [:)] And it spreads names of lands no one really used.

We are now mixing WitW and WitE2 a bit. In the new set up we have regions in the data which we may use for garrison control hence the difference between east and west and the use of Nazi regions.

Language is always an issue - we have Panzer (not Tank) and Infantry (not Infanterie) and Fallschirm (not Parachute).
