You need to ... predict the direction of your retreats.

Is this even possible realistically? At this time all I can say about retreats is that they will be in whatever is the worst direction available from a tactical point of view. For example, troops in process of moving west to safety, attacked from the east -- and forced to retreat southeast into a trap. [:@]

Several players have discussed retreat direction recently and the consensus seems to be that the unit will retreat toward the nearest friendly base, provided there is a clear (not interdicted by enemy troops) supply path to it. Otherwise, it appears to be random.

So ... if I read you right, retreat can, in some cases, be predicted but never controlled. And apparently it's easy, at least in some cases, for the attacking player to herd fleeing units back to a doomed, trapped base. That would explain some of what I've seen in China and, to a lesser extent, Malaya -- admittedly, limited experience and small sample size.

Jorge, sorry for the detour, let's hear what happened with your counterattack!

Never controlled, but you can predict the consequences:
imagine you have a stack of 30,000 troops near base "A" (1 hex away)
Base "A" stacking limits is 25,000 and it is already at max
You have to be very careful with the 30,000 stack because if it is defeated, it will likely move to base "A" and proceed to burn supply at horrible rates.

So you basically need to manage carefully where you have troops, otherwise supply will simply evaporate. This is not so much of an issue in other theatres, but China is already starving

Ouch. But not unexpected.

I would suggest you suicide shock attack with those worthless units again to get them destroyed.

Yes I did that, I need more Chinese units destroyed... I don't like to this, as it is kind of exploiting a (poor) game mechanic, but no other choice really

so another slaughter is coming.... which means a period of extreme vulnerability in the next few weeks, I hope level 6 forts help, because he will most likely withdraw and replace his most disrupted units with fresh troops very soon

Things looking much better in Australia... another supply run will be attempted, most likely all xAKLs will be destroyed, but if I can disembark 6,000 supply and/ or naval bomb Japanese SCTFs, then it would be worthy

Rats, at least the first attack hit the Japanese pretty hard, too, but this one was a complete disaster!

Are your Australian tanks vulnerable to enemy bombers?

They might be, but there is nothing I can do about it... too far away.
But a key mitigant is that N Australia has been, so far, completely secondary for Japan. I doubt there will be strong opposition, at least early on

This is the big disaster:
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
26348 casualties reported
Squads: 1564 destroyed, 866 disabled
Non Combat: 375 destroyed, 299 disabled
Engineers: 77 destroyed, 14 disabled
Guns lost 21 (5 destroyed, 16 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

only 5 units destroyed in total... which means I am naked once he recovers or brings fresh troops

Dumb question: can you just disband some of the trashed units that would never recover anyway?

Big win at Darwin.
port size is 3, naval support 36... which means I can guarantee that around half load will unload before Japan can react

In other news, I risked the fleet to cover some supply TFs. But I forgot to setup CAP over Chittagong, thanksfully his LBA missed
CVs are at DL=2, cruisers at DL=10

Question now is, will he accept the challenge?
I am happy to fight him as long as we fight close to Calcutta.
