Getting my arse handed to me in Meeting of Titans

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Getting my arse handed to me in Meeting of Titans

Post by mantrain »

Has anyone else played this scenario? I have tried a couple of times and each time my forces are essentially destroyed. Heck, lot's of fun, just wondering what I need to do differently.

If it's the scenario I'm thinking of, you are starting out incredibly outnumbered. Realize you can't screen the whole map, and try for max casualties when you concentrate your forces on the defense. Make them pay for every inch, and micro-mange your retreat as much as possible given some of us believe we've learned the AI doesn't seem to be willing to stand off when it should.

If the AI is playing the Soviets it shouldn't stand off. The best opportunity for them to do damage to NATO units is in close. Not at a distance.

Magog is correct-you can't spread your forces out. You have to keep them from crossing the river. It's a tough fight and don't expect to be combat effective afterwards.

anyways this scenario has quite a bit of replayabilty. Each time figuring out more how to be more successful. Can anyone recommend additional scenarios?

I wasn't very clear about that. I wasn't referring to the Soviet AI, but rather to the human players units that don't adhere to their stand-off distance when on Screen orders.

I like "Eyes, Ears and Teeth". I wish we had more "small" scenarios like that. In EET you have a chance to prove you can repeat the sort of stunts the Israelis once pulled in the Arab/Israeli war, conducting that most difficult of manoeuvres (an orderly fighting retreat) and possibly breaking the will of the WP forces as they come on. I also think the orders given to the NATO player at start are pretty much impossible, which I thought was a nice touch. If anyone can accomplish what is demanded I'd sure like to watch that game!

What? Impossible orders?

That's not good!! Who created that scenario? It should say in the editor. Just check that name and let us know and we'll censor that designer for you!!!

I spend just about 3 years driving back and forth around Fulda Gap in the mid-late 70's. What I watched happen, and was often a part of, are the basis for most of the scenarios that I've created for the game. Not all of them but a large part.

I'm a chaos gamer. By that I mean that I believe that chaos reigns on the battlefield. This isn't chess with tanks instead of Bishops and infantry instead of pawns. It's not nice and orderly. More importantly, General Murphy is alive and well on the battlefield. If it can go wrong it will; and often in multiples of events.

So, when I get to the point of putting scenarios/campaigns together I just go with chaos and General Murphy in each and every one of them. That's how you end up short of infantry, or missing parts of your artillery, how AA assets are missing, how attack helicopters roam free for a time before leaving, etc....

I hope that this works for you.

And just to let you know I didn't create 'Meeting Titans' but I did create 'Eyes, Ears and Teeth'!!

Good Hunting.

With a good plan, some weather, some luck, and some serious gunnery skills you can get the victory in the scenario.

Was attacked across three different approaches this time. Got lucky and spotted the enemy 2S1s parked on the backside of the hill and ordered up a helping of ICM. Smashed over 50% of their tubes. A later HE strike took out one remaining unit. Also managed to take down the major AD assets and lost only one helo and one A-10 (FSCC called them on a target before I could get them).

Hi,

Just wondering about the "Reported Kills and Claims" tab............ during the course of play (prior to game's end) is there FOW built into the reported enemy data on the spreadsheet?? If not perhaps it's something to include for 2.1....just a thought.

Rob.
So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)

Rob, currently there is no FoW in it, but I like the idea of looking into doing that for 2.1 with some of the other FoW items.
