A few questions

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

A few questions

Post by Bipman »

Hi all

Enjoying the new scenarios but I have some general questions :-

1.) Artillery seems to have little effect against armour; is this because a direct hit will only do damage ?

2.) The Russians seem to bombard hexes with their own units in it; is this due to doctrine or the fact they have so many units ? It often does more damage than good.

3.) The guards units seem to fire smoke at my units for some reason. Sometimes they fire smoke at my tanks which helps me no end.

4.) Mortars seem to do little damage to infantry units in forests but I thought this would cause more damage due to it bursting amongst the trees ?

Thanks in advance !

A few answers:

1. Damage by arty fire is a function of the type and size of artillery and then the protection factor and cover of the targets. HE against tanks in the open will get a few knock outs, but in a city it could be tough to get any. Regardless of the kills, arty strikes impact readiness of the targeted units.

2. Both sides can hit their own forces if the timing of a strike happens to catch a unit advancing through or into the hex. Happen a bit more to the Soviets do to delays in their command and control steam. These delays also cause the hitting in "empty" hexes were enemies moved before the strike could arrive.

3. What the AI fires is based on what they see and how well their overall command readiness is. The Soviets were big on using smoke and it is still effective against a number of unit types that don't have thermal sights and there is still some minor thermal degradation with the smoke. This is an area we will be working on to see if we can get a better feel for the right type of ammo to be used by the AI in the future.

4. That is a known issue that has been pointed out by MR and we will be fixing in Southern Storm. We have made what minor adjustments we can for the issue but we are limited until we revamp the code.

Great questions. I hope I covered the bases. [8D]
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

Southern storm?

Southern Storm will be our next game, based on a new game engine (2.1). It will allow us to improve and add features, introduce new Warsaw Pact and NATO forces (East Germans, Czechoslovaks, Canadians and French) and be situated in southern Germany in the same time-frame as Red Storm.

Lets just say the release schedule is a bit cloudier after Southern Storm. Northern Storm is on the list though! [:D]
