Game doesn't work after resuming from sleep

Post by HeinzHarald »

I'm using a Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10 which works just fine, but when resuming from sleep the entire map is frozen and it doesn't help to redraw. I need to save, quit and restart (menus work just fine).

I don't observe that problem on my Windows 7 desktop. Nor have any other members of the Dev Team, running all versions of Windows, reported anything like that.

That's an operating system issue, over which we have no control, and for which we would have no solution. Except to advise you to save and exit the game, if your Surface Pro is likely to go to sleep. Or maybe tweak your SP power settings to lengthen the go-to-sleep trigger (which maybe is not a good option, if you are running off internal battery).

Depending on your version of Windows, maybe there is some system setting(s) you can tweak to ameliorate the problem. I am not a Windows expert, so I couldn't say. (Crossroads, anything to add?)

But there's nothing we can do at the application level to help your situation, sorry.

Thanks for your reply. The SP3 uses a special kind of sleep mode called InstantGo. I suppose there could be some kind of compatibility issue with it. Pretty much all games run fine, but there was one other where I needed to open and close a menu after sleeping if my memory serves.

(Crossroads, anything to add?)

Curiously, with my current custom built with W7 first, I had this issue at times with CS2.0 and my old rig running W7.

That is when I reported it, no one else had it so we could not reproduce the issue, but the re-draw function was introduced. It did not help then either. I then upgraded to W8, which did not bring a relief. So I figured it was my custom built. No one else from the Dev Team or BETA BDE had similar issues.

Then, I upgraded to W10, and curiously there's been no more issues with sleep. I did have the white screen issue when I ran four parallel versions of the game for the stress testing, so I assume it has something to do with game trying to access an Operating System service, that is at the time unavailable or times out.

The good thing is that it only affects the display, so if that occurs just keep calm and grog on: hit the Save option from the Menu (for it is the map that is affected only), exit the game, and reopen.

For the record I have tested having the game open in one W10 Virtual Desktop, scenario and map editors in another, and some other stuff in third Virtual Desktop. That can be done, to put the game aside to switch to desktop for a say quick look at your emails.

So, it seems an issue some of us are blessed with. The work-around, until we can reproduce this at our labs, is to Save, exit the game, and open it again.

Interesting. Any guesses as to what kind of service might be the culprit?

My system is quite "clean" with very little running in the background (Logitech SetPoint and OneDrive/Office Sync basically), few changes to system settings and a fresh W10 installation.

I think it must be an O/S service and not another application. The computer goes to Sleep mode, the game finds itself with issues as the O/S does so? Guessing here.

I've had similar issues running Win 7 and now with Win 10. I've only had it affect the display, although none of the menus were accessible either.

As said, just save/close the game and restart.

I to get a game board freeze lock up with my Widows 7 desktop. I traced the conflict to my screen saver. I turned off my screensaver and the problem went away.

i've not reported it but happens to me in 10. if i leave it up and go away for maybe 10 minutes...it freezes
and i have to Ctl Alt Del to get out. i get strange graphics sometimes but most times its just a straight freeze.

also its the only program/app, whatever you want to call them, that i have this issue with and i've got about
20+ matrix slitherine games plus a lot of JTS games.

i've turned off all shut down sleep etc etc rules.

so its up...its up. i don't use a screensaver.

it locked up yesterday but for most part i've learned to exit game before i move away from computer. i
don't consider it a big deal...

thanks,

Casebier,

I've experienced the same. And, it is just not happening with ME.
When my computer goes to screen saver and/or sleep I either have a black screen within the game screen's border. Or, I have a "tiled" pattern of the one line repeated over each hex line from top to bottom.

I can exit and return to the scenario/campaign I am playing with no problems after.
