In thinking ahead, you have destroyed a fair bit of Japanese troops, which might respawn on Honshu, and if they do, then the supply drain upon the Empire will surely be great re-creating all those troops.

You are now involved in a life and death struggle at Daito and Okinawa tying up your heavy bomber forces from the destruction of Japanese industry to bombing runways. He does not need a BF, just fly in part of a aviation HQ for the support. A few Cats could take care of that. The infantry divisions have engineer squads which could fix the airfield. The BFs can come in later.

If/when he takes Formosa, then Amoy to Foochow is within easy range, even down to Swatow.

If he can trap a lot of units in a non-base hex, he could just move from all six sides to control all exits and dig in. Let the enemy kill themselves off trying to escape the large POW camp.

I think that "token" is not an apt description. Resistance has been much lighter than it would have been except for trapping so many fine IJA formations away from the action. Not to mention destroying them, a task which is still underway. DAW HQ has rallied many troops from elsewhere in China to the front.

Not at Canton yet! There should be fairly little between us and Canton now, however:
- It will take time to walk there.
- Lang Son, while on the verge of falling, still must be taken, and
- The Imperial army at Lang Son must be defeated either in place or as it retreats.
- It is clear that Walter is fine with leaving them to defend to the last in exchange for time.

Canton and Hong Kong are important targets IMO. Significant industry at both. A large repair shipyard at Hong Kong. Fully developed airfields. Very likely large supply stockpiles. Bypassing them by land makes no sense to me.

Targets farther along the coast of China will become more vulnerable to seaward invasions when Okinawa and Formosa are in Allied hands. The battle for Canton and Hong Kong should be well underway before those operations are complete. Remember, the Imperial defense in China will be undermined from the rear even while holes are being punched through it.

Good! That will make cutting off the Home Islands from most/all SLOCs even more effective.

There was no more to be gained by hitting Japanese industry, because the air defenses of the industrial targets was massively strengthened in response to our early offensive. For example, 222 fighters at Osaka/Kyoto now, and something tells me they aren't the junior varsity. I feel I got what I could while I could. I will get more later when the bombers get fighters in there to help them.

Self-restraint on that until January 1, 1945. IIRC I have not informed Walter of that.

No, but my butt sags a little. Got to work out more. [:D]

No. The bombers have a tougher row to hoe in the game than IRL. First off, Japanese pilot quality is much better than IRL. Second, the IJ player knows what is coming and can plan for it. BTW, I got in what I could because I started earlier than he thought I would. In addition to the damage done, many Imperial air defenses have been pulled back to defend industry in the Home Islands. Recall than when bombing Home Islands industry got tougher I moved the B-29 groups back to Asia to hit HI and LI targets. The later of those raids were just as tough as the Home Islands had become. In about two game weeks the new model of B-29 with longer range comes on line at a higher production rate, and the P-51D comes on line with a higher production rate.

The final battle (for the zombies present) is tomorrow.

All additional combat forces for the assault on Lang Son have arrived and the place is frightfully over stacked, 146,114 out of 55,000. This attack better do the trick! The USA 31st ID will only bombard as mentioned previously. 3,787 AV (3,615 AV will attack) at Lang Son for us now.

We have troops in Soerabaja, but it will be a while yet before the first attack is ready. More troops and support elements moving in, some still at sea or even at prior locations. Our troops are ashore at Mataram and will attack tomorrow. Several cruisers are seen in 2 TFs at Singapore, possibly indicating an impending breakout attempt.

Loads of action off Okinawa and everywhere around it. After USN sub Spot attacked Kumano, the IJN TF found ready guards.

Many air attacks came in from various bases but most raids were destroyed to the last aircraft. Attacks were made against many TFs, including some of the bombardment TFs on their way to Iwo Jima (which did not have CAP). Tonight's bombardment runs will be home ported at Guam so the ships head out of range before being ordered to Iwo Jima. An ASW group guarding a large oiler group was also attacked and it plus the oilers will move farther south. One fleet carrier TF will move south two hexes to provide cover for the lonely convoy as it speeds to join the gang. Cover might also be provided by the edge of a rain region.

The B-29s made several runs at Nago doing paltry damage. All runs were opposed by Imperial fighters and none received even courtesy escorts from Allied carrier-borne fighters, even though practically surrounded by aircraft carriers. What, did they have a fight in the O-club or something? 20 lost on the day.

Allied carrier strikes did better, although the targets were not momentous.

Predictably, our fighters had a much harder time flying escort than they did on CAP.

Everybody (save the lonely convoy) hits the beaches tomorrow. There will be no bombardment of Amami Oshima, but tonight's bombardments of Nago and Naha will close those bases for offensive missions.

Email Tokyo has revealed that we sailed right past where it was thought we would land, and then sailed right past where it was then thought we would land!

So he first thought the Bonins and then just Daito Shoto I suppose?

I interpreted it as meaning first Daito Shoto, then Okinoerabushima (where the Nago convoys staged, one hex from Nago).

It's also possible, given belief that Okinoerabushima was the northern target, that Kume-jima was thought to be the southern target.

This is a cool part of the game and some enjoyable commentary, but it does show something that I did by design. Way back when I was thinking about how to approach the Okinawa operation I decided to get troops on Okinawa first - without the clear warning of a Diato Shoto invasion. Okinawa is a really obvious target and it was an attempt to get some measure of tactical surprise that would reduce attacks on the invasion forces before they unload.

Edit to add: This is why I made accommodations in sea lift plans just to get the Okinawa landings done first.

Sort of my comment that you understand fine distinctions that end up saving VP's in the end ..

I am thinking Okinawa is more about projection of power to isolate Japan from retreating forces back to the Home Islands
and isolate any hope for the Philippines as opposed to an immediate stepping stone to the home islands.

The delicate balance continues as the Allies avoid a slog fest but put tremendous pressure on the IJ ..

An Admiral who makes "fine distinctions" does not make mistakes. He just misunderestimates the situation. [:D]
