Alternative setup?

VR designs has been reinforced with designer Cameron Harris and the result is a revolutionary new operational war game 'Barbarossa' that plays like none other. It blends an advanced counter pushing engine with deep narrative, people management and in-depth semi-randomized decision systems.

Alternative setup?

Post by Orm »

Would it be possible to have an option to play with a alternative setup of the forces? Some sort of free or semi free placement of the units? This might increase the replayability even more.

This is something that is overlooked so much.

- No matter how interesting this game is (and it is)
- No matter how fun this game is (and it is)

The fact is, with any game, a set starting position is going to fairly quickly lead to an optimum first turn.

I would say the game makers have got the play balance pretty okay (minor tweaking required) straight out of the box. Rather than look to amend play balance through other means, why not looked at giving a degree of flexibility on starting position as an option?

This approach would give increased replayability and could be achieved in a couple of key ways:

- Different start positions allowed and/or
- Action Points being variable

This game is a gem - if replayability can be increased, this could become an absolute classic.

Doesn't the Soviet player have What-if scenarios to accommodate just that?

Playing non-historical Germans, my perception is that I'm facing a different SU setup on every start.

Page 18 of the manual suggests you may be right, although is not entirely clear.

Non historical always mixes up the start positions, even if you leave the what ifs alone. This is a neat thing this game does, wish others did the same.

The variations aren't crazy or anything, but it's enough to keep things fresh.

Maybe a shorter scenario starting a month or so before Typhoon 'd be great too...

The top would be a scenario editor, with more maps and community mods to ensure the game an eternal life ! That would be absolutely fantastic :-)

But it's probably not possible because of the structure pf the game specificaly designed for barbarossa (3 theaters etc).

Hi,

Providing the ability to shuffle units around at the start, although still within their assigned theatres, is a possibility.

Cheers,
