HQ Bug or WAD?

Post by warspite1 »

I read in the manual that if the Soviets lose and HQ then there is a chance that a division will be allocated to the nearest valid HQ. Also that this applies only if the unit is not cut-off. I have had two instances in recent games where this does not seem to be the case. The first time I ignored it but now it has happened again.

5th Army HQ has been destroyed. A division from that Army (circled yellow) unit is surrounded and so thought it could not obtain a new HQ. But, having done so, why would it choose 3rd Army HQ (also circled yellow) - in a different front - rather than the BMD or the 27th Army (circled red)? Or even 11th Army (circled blue) which, although also cut-off, is effectively next door?

i'd say that's WAD, as to attach to another HQ that isn't in supply would be as bad as no HQ tbh, but developers will have a more correct and better answer i'd bet

Possibly, but I think an HQ in the same Front would be better as an HQ in another Front is, in most cases, just as bad i.e. what are the chances they will ever meet up?!

if you turn on hexes, then count, the one that is selected is a lot closer, even in a different front, and as mentioned before the AI doesn't have the worry about fronts as the Human players does, so one rule for AI and another for Human but tie either's hands to tight and games not so much fun, as it is, it plays really well, the distance to the next one, and the chances of a breakout or and recovery of the units is low anyway, there lost and gone soon enough so it won't matter which HQ it gets attached to, there all but dead now and a lost cause

Hi Warspite,

The nearest HQ would be the one chosen but there's a specific check there to ensure that it's not cut-off otherwise it's an invalid choice.

Is it possible that the 11th Army HQ wasn't cut-off at the time of reassignment?

Cheers,
Cameron

No, I think it was cut-off so if its simply the closest non-cut-off HQ then this is WAD. Its no biggie - 99 times out of 100 the Soviet unit will be toast regardless, but it just sticks out like a sore thumb when there is an HQ almost next door and suddenly the unit is attached to an HQ a zillion miles away in a different front!

Hi Warspite,

The routine finds the nearest, non cut-off HQ to the unit (which itself can't be cut-off) so if you've got an example of a reassignment way over yonder I'd be interested in a save game.

Distance takes precedence over front.

Cheers,
Cameron
