I don't know but I'll wager they are the best sub captains he could find, great crews, and a dose of luck thrown in. I have plenty of naval search up especially if you count the carriers' planes. The weather over the CL TF was extreme overcast in the PM day phase. No way to tell in the other phases unless there's a combat that reports it, and sub attacks/ASW attacks don't report the weather. The CA was in the bombardment TF and on the move to Iwo Jima, so was not in the same hex when orders phase arrived.

That sure was a lot of torpedoes!

About Lang Son - I should have pointed out that DAW HQ appears to have initiated a rescue mission. We have a unit NE of Lang Son, blocking retreat. They have a unit moving into that hex, apparently to move into Lang Son behind it and re-flip the hex side to them. The unit(s) moving west out of Nanning would be adjacent to that hex, and serve to hold open the door for movement. We are countering.

Pakhoi airfield is now size 3 and has ample air support: air strength will be increased over the coming turns. Supply at Kunming is better but we will wait at least another turn before the next attack.

The first armoured unit has arrived at Alor Star. We will wait for all units in the spearhead to catch up before attacking as there are about 20,000 troops at Alor Star.

Our troops at Lang Son are in pretty good shape. Only one battered unit is really too high disruption to attack, a Chinese Army unit with 99 AV, so they will sit this one out. Next attack tomorrow!

Denpasar defenders will have to be reduced to the last squad!

There was much helmet waving in the Allied fortifications outside Naha and Nago today as the ground pounders cheered on a sky full of friendly fighter planes. One sub in the path of the carriers was caught and pummeled by an ASW group and is reported sunk, and all the carriers arrived safely on station. The Imperial bomber groups did not get that word from their search assets, and there were just as many air raids on our troop positions on Okinawa today as most days. One raid of 6 planes even got through intact after a brief stern chase. But the rest were savaged, and only a few times did any surviving bombers insist on making drops anyway. Kamikazes attacked our warships but none got within diving range. See the air losses below.

Our carriers got in some strikes of their own, on Imperial shipping and warships.

The troops ashore are much better with the worst disrupted divisions standing at 16%, 21%, and 35%. Those are not good numbers but are a vast improvement from 5 out of 6 divisions worse than the worst off today. The ships off of Nago appear to be a cruiser force, and so the carriers will pull back to near Daito Shoto tomorrow.

All remaining units for the Daito Shoto invasion are now loading; some convoys have finished loading and are now heading for the muster point where mine sweepers and destroyers await them. The two fleet carrier TFs just refueled from oilers about 11 hexes south of Daito Shoto and will proceed to rejoin the fleet.

The two Australian divisions have moved to the outskirts of Kwangchowan and will attack tomorrow. Kunming is still lacking supply and so the artillery unit there will cease bombarding until the general attack is ordered, and the fighter unit, conducting close ground strikes, has been moved to another base. A base force and an AA unit are beginning the march from Pakhoi to Kwangchowan.

Tomorrow a tank Bde moving from the east will flip that hex side and allow the general advance to proceed through Lang Son and bypass the former garrison. The artillery will stay in place to bombard and a substantial force to hold and wear down the trapped Imperials. The enemy movements to open escape routes for them are too small to succeed and are being countered. The base itself is undamaged and airfield expansion will begin right away. Due to the extreme crowding, no additional units will be brought in until many units already present exit to the east (after that hex side is flipped tomorrow). Enemy strength present is still 12 units, 50,980 troops, 461 guns, and 231 AFV - a powerful force! A single Spitfire VIII group of 16 planes is being brought in (on 0 range CAP) ahead of air support to discourage supply drops. The 2EB attack bombers will continue striking from 10,000 ft along with the 4EB.

Those guys at Denpasar are some real die hards.

The troops will rest and then call on increased air support to dig out the last defenders without unneeded casualties. The IJN appear to have moved at least one CL to Palembang. Precautions were already in place with Java Sea traffic and will continue.

An IJN sub missed a shot at a CVE. Our carriers, although farther away, were able to wreak a little havoc.

As soon as all troop convoys make the muster point (2 days from now), the old BB bombardment TFs will deploy and begin their work while the convoys are en route. From the muster point it should take the convoys 4 days to reach the jump off point one hex from Daito Shoto (although possibly 3 days). Estimate D-Day Daito Shoto as 7 days from now.
