For anyone Posting over to Dan's side (asking about this) you need to know that I have the turn and will be sitting on it due to now needing to seriously move some aircraft and other 'assets.' Gonna take quite a while.

Great result!
But what did I miss...I thought they had to retreat back across the river?

RE: Banzai!
You know about my obsession with pairing Army/Corp HQs with a Command HQ when it comes to attacking a base. [:D] Have you done so for northern Sumatra?

The Noose
February 6, 1943
As several hundred fighters and bombers move into Malaya and Sumatra, 12-14 Base Force and Construction units get movement orders to head for Moulmein for embarkation to islands being 'liberated' by Japanese forces. Transports and Fast Transports wait for their arrival.
Today Trinkat is re-taken as two Paratrooper units and three weak Naval Guard force the surrender of the 132nd Infantry Regiment. Over 1,800 troops are taken prisoner in the operation.
The only island of note left is Phuket. It will be taken within a two days.
The three islands stretching towards Sabang from Port Blair are all Japanese are are all about to gain AFs and QUICKLY! Why Dan never took these bases and stocked them with Engineers and Base Forces leaves me perplexed. He will be limited in the upcoming campaign to a single AF. Now that AF is Sz-8 so it is BIG but that AF is all he shall have...
I am going to begin Fighter Sweeps in two days. The deployment to Burma really stopped this but now that is about to change...

Southern Command is in Singapore prepping for Sabang. Am also using it for unit upgrades since there are three Infantry Divisions present there refitting...
Two Army HQ are already at Medan prepping for Sabang.

Planning
February 6, 1943
We're heading out fairly soon to see Star Wars again but I thought it might be a good idea to share the PRELIMINARY Plan for victory in Sumatra.
There are three full strength Japanese ID in the hex below Langsa. These ID (2nd, 5th, 38th--16th Army) are the holding force keeping Dan's troop's attention. He has 6 units present in this hex and nearly 20 more in Langsa.
While the aerial campaign gains control of the skies over Sabang AND work to render it untenable to shipping, the offensive will fully reveal itself.
The 4th, 14th, 21st ID, and 25th Army will cross Sumatra and cut the road/rail-line on Sumatra's east coast. At the same time the 10th and (an as yet un-bought) Chinese/Manchurian ID will advance up the west coast threatening Sabang itself. LOTS of Artillery and Engineers will be with the Sabang prong to make it LOOK like more then there is and make this decoy thrust APPEAR formidable...
The goal is to force Dan into a retreat from below Langsa and out of Langsa itself. If we can unhinge his forces then they will be moving, out-in-the-open, and vulnerable. If he chooses to not retreat from this situation then the blocking force to the north of Langsa will advance to the city and take it from the rear.
The key will be for the troos crossing Sumatra to not be seen until it is too late. I have/am reconning the hexs along the coast and there are no units deployed as of yet. Since this Corps (4th--14th--21st) will be two hexes from Sabang and Langsa, there is a chance they won't be seen. Dan has no recon planes in Sabang. He has PBYs but that appears to be it. This MIGHT have a chance of success...
Southern Army HQ will move from Singapore to Medan and set-up there in about 10 days.
Opinions and/or comments from you armchair generals? I'll take them for all that they are worth.

A damaged Boise THINKS she is nearly home and safe when two more Torps plow into her near Koggala. Think we can say BYE-BYE Boise!
Phuket falls February 11th. Five Engineer units will land tomorrow. Base is only four hexes from Sabang. NICE!
Two days of bloody sweeps over Sabang. Mr Tony makes his debut and does well. We sweep again on the 12th.
Two 4 DD TF are ordered into Sabang.
There are now 3 BB and 4 BC available to Japan at Singers. They shall be formed into two Bombardment TF and hit Sabang within 10 days.

It is time to directly go after Sabang with the Fleet. Here are my assets for the attack
BB: Yamato, Nagato, and Fuso
BC: All Four Kongo's
CL: 4
DD: 22-25
My initial thinking is to send in FOUR TF. We'd do two 'Sweeping TF' of 1 CL and 5 DD to tangle and mess with the formations. The BBs would be go in next to do battle with Indiana (hopefully slightly low on Main Gun Ammo if the first two TF's have done their job), and finally the four Kongos set for bombardment of the AF. Everything will be set in TF Number going low to high so the TF enter the hex in order.
Comments/Ideas?
I see Dan getting input from gadzillions of players and would love some Japanese Fan Boy LOVE here!

RE: ...the Monkey Chased the Weasel
How many Allied bombers are on the ground at Sabang?
My advice is to send all but one force in as surface groups, and bombard with only one group (and a high numbered task force at that).
Then the following turn you may have the ability to bombard again with other groups, especially if the Allied BB is on the bottom.
I just can't stand having bombardment task forces surprised by enemy task forces, especially one as potent as the Allies field here.
Just my thoughts...

RE: ...the Monkey Chased the Weasel
You read my mind. The two Sweeping Groups will have lowest TF Numbers then the 3 BBs as a Surface TF, and finally the highest numbered TF will be the Bombardment Group of the 4 Kongos. I figure three BBs SHOULD be enough to knock Indiana out of commission. Have bought time to keep any reinforcements away by bringing in 3 CV and 5 CVL to occupy his attention between Ceylon and Sumatra.

There is a ship equipped with radar going in each TF.
Ordered the four TF to Alor Star. They have an easy run to get into Sabang from there.

Burma
This theatre of action has been cleared. On the approaches to Katha, this ID launches its attack and easily defeats the troops that once threatened Shwebo. Another several thousand Allied casualties are entered into the books.
The AF of Burma are emptying as hundreds of fighters and bombers move south to Malaya and Sumatra...

Night Bombing
Had a quick chat with Michael this morning and he made an excellent suggestion about trying Night Bombing of Sabang. Considering he has it chock full of ships in Port and a maximum number of aircraft AF, this sounds like a very interesting idea. What sort of success have people had doing this? Is it better to go after the AF or the Port? Any comments would help.
Bombardment Range
Second Topic: Have got to deal with Mines when we tangle with Sabang. I am thinking of setting the bombardment at 20,000 to stay away. Thoughts/comments there? I do have 6 DMS that I could send in with each of the BB/BC TF. Could do three each and they add to the escorts...not sure on that... pretty good chance they would get sunk in a surface fight. Recommendation for a range on the bombardment?

Comments? If you're going to go for night bombing in this era when he has no night fighters you should allow him to bomb your oil.
At minimum you should talk to him about night bombing if it hasn't been done in the game.

He has 300+ fighters that could all be used in that capacity. Some of them are appropriate for the possible job.
I wrote Dan asking for our old House Rules. If he still has them then we'll see if that was addressed.
