Very first impressions

Post by MarshalAl »

I've just bought the game, and these are a couple of things that grate even before starting to play
1. The portrayed geography of Britain is bizarre and bears little resemblance to reality. Anglia now seems to be the south Midlands, Wessex (which doesn't really exist) is where Sussex should be, Sussex should be Hampshire, Lancashire is actually Cheshire, and Scots will be stunned that Perthshire has moved west to cover the Western Highlands.

2. The standard of english is poor. Mis-spellings (eg. nuumber and use of 'till' instead of until) and weirdly worded phrases galore.

I emphasis this is just based on opening the game, and I'm still looking forward to playing it.

The difference between till and until.......

In a nutshell, they can be used interchangeably in most situations, with the obvious exception of fixed phrases such as "Till death do us part". Some people will object to "till" (as being too informal or whatever), but only for entirely made-up reasons (such as that "till" is a careless abbreviation of "until" or something, which is simply wrong; "till" is actually the older of the two words, and "until" was derived from it rather than the other way round).

In other words, the use of the word till is acceptable. It is not a mis-spelling.

OK, I'll concede that. Other points stand.

I've now had a chance to look at the tutorials. I cannot believe how fast the narrator is speaking in the tutorials. And they aren't instructions on how to play the game, but commentaries on game play. Not found them the slightest use in learning how to play.

Bear in mind I'm new to this game and the ageod system. I was looking for a tutorial to guide me through starting the game as a newbie. Does such a thing exist?

Sadly it appears not, and the lack of activity on this forum is worrying. I bought this game last week and it looks to have so much potential. Although I have hardly explored it, I haven't had any crashes.

I would love this game to fulfil its potential.

Would have to agree with a certain lack of activity here on the Matrix Forum (which is a real shame). However the Ageod forum is much busier with posts and information about this game.

have a look at the posts in the 'War-Room', also there is a lot of generic material on how to play AGEOD games over on their forum.

Since the underlying game system is much the same I'd suggest having a look at some of the classic AARs such as 'learning from Prussia' (Rise of Prussia) or 'Wars in America' (a how to AAR) or the 'Hero, the Traitor and the Barbarian (Alea Jacta Est). Each of those contains extensive discussion of the game mechanics (in context) and will help your play of WoN.

Warning, the Wars in America AAR contains tales of massacres and misused matches.
