I'm guessing no regular infantry squads got hurt. Probably a vehicle heavy unit.

24 June 1944

Invaders kick off. Setup took a little while, as I had to add battleships, destroyers and rocket ships to each invasion force. On top of that, one ASW and one minesweeping group will accompany each force. I forgot to get a cruiser-heavy ASuW group formed, so they'll be off next turn and catch up. Probably three days hence, I'll see about follow-up supply convoys. I'd like to have loaded up base forces, but I don't think I have enough transports to do this right away. I probably can, as some APAs were repairing as I formed these up. A big CV group with about 10 fleet carriers of all types plus two fast battleships will also tag along.

This seriously weakened them. The paras there will attack them next turn, with the bombers hitting the troops again. I've got about 2-1 in AV right now, mostly from today's bombing. If I get lucky and take the base, two fighter squadrons will also die.

Over my armored unit two hexes south of Ranchi, KS just swept without the bombers, letting the troops move unmolested. I'm rotating Jugs through on LRCAP, though they take a while to get the fatigue back down.

A couple things.

One of the invasion groups has 6 CVEs with it. The others all have 8 attached. One Invasion group got maxed at 100 ships, so in that case, the CVEs are in a separate group. A couple have Corsairs on board, but the rest carry Hellcats. No Wildcats allowed. F6F pool is still in the 700 range. I think the dash-5 production will start up pretty soon. I'm also due for new SB2Cs also.

All my B-29 squadrons are sitting at Portland Roads right now, which they were able to reach from Ceylon. There's a bunch of fragments still at Trincomalee, needing to repair before moving. 50-60 are currently in Australia. I think I'm at 15 squadrons right now. Two were lost in the transfer. My pool is sitting around 50 right now. As mentioned before, a whole bunch, probably another dozen at least will arrive within the next month. Unfortunately, they can't reach the Marianas from the Marshalls (35 or so hexes). They could pay Truk a visit. Thinking about this, I'll hold off any raid on Rabaul with the Australian wing for now. I don't want KS to know they're in-theatre and start bulking up places like Truk with fighters once the Marshalls fall. If he knows they're around, I'm sure he can put 2 + 2 together and see what's coming.

I won't miss the Superforts in India. I'm up to my armpits there in B-24 squadrons, and they're starting to have an effect. KS's only real operational airfield, barring Cuttack is Calcutta, as I've shut down all his western airfields. I have a large reserve of bombers, especially B-25s, on Ceylon, which I can move up if needed.

I pound the living @!$*& out of Cuttack's airfield this turn. Tooltip says 86% damage, but I think the recon came before the bombers were finished. Cuttack's airfield is toast. Everyone flipping back to hitting troops next turn.

I give Ranchi's airfield a similar workover. He's actually got aircraft based there. One squadron each of Lightnings and Jugs sweep, and the big bomber raid was able to simply bulldoze through. Readings say 47%, but that's probably low also. Next turn, 6 full squadrons of P-47s will sweep and all the bombers will hit the airfield again.

Everything's slippery around Ranchi right now. My flanking armor to the south, even though it's by itself with no enemy co-hex, is unable to leave their current hex. My US forces are entering the fray on the west, where I think it's a bit weaker. I have a feeling this may wind up stalemating. Once the airfield at Ranchi is dead, I'm going to go full effort on the troops there.

Forgot one note.

A supply convoy arrived at Cape Town. Amongst other stuff, it's carrying about 120k in supply. I'll have to decide if I want to milk it for India right away or not. I still have about 400k worth waiting to arrive on-map yet, so I'm not at a critical stage. There's probably another dozen transports nearly to England by now also. Cape Town itself doesn't need a whole lot itself to simply exist.

Once it builds up, I can send another 50k per shot out of Abadan. Aden's a bit slower to grow.

We may be slowing down for awhile. KS is having real life intrude on him with work and maybe flipping jobs. I could tell he's been distracted with our pace slowing down. He says he doesn't want to give this up, but we may take a small hiatus, which I told him I would be all right with.

Mombasa accumulates something like 66 supply and 100 fuel per turn. Not much, but it does build up. I send a small convoy about every six months to take all but about 5000 supply and fuel - that I leave to load with the African units that arrive at Mombasa.

This particular, I think, landed more base forces there, so I've added about 50 more fighters from the islands south to beef it up. 3 or 4 CVEs had escorted this group. I have a severe excess of CVEs right now and they're handy for these missions. They can almost handle these long distance attacks, with help from the island.

Further east, I had started a massive airfield strike on Cuttack. About 153 bombers, mostly heavies with some 25s took part and pretty much trashed the place. Intel says about 85%, but I've noticed that it tends to come in before all the raids are finished, so it's probably down. No fighters were defending here. All the bombers hitting this will flip to hitting troops next turn. Calcutta and Ranchi are probably the only airbases of significance in India for Japan right now.

Ranchi was also raided by bombers. Not quite as many bombers and it was heavily defended, but I also have sweeps going on which are inflicting a goodly amount of losses. Airbase damage here is around 45%. Bombers will continue hitting the base here. Three additional squadrons of Jugs will also sweep next turn.

KS may be formidable on the ground, but in the air, I can pretty much do what I want. If I can finish off the airfield at Ranchi, I'll be looking at Calcutta next. Taking away all his air in India would be nice.

I'm in a little bit of a dilemma regarding my B-29s. They're all quietly recovering in North Australia -- Portland Roads, I think. I'm highly tempted to hit the port at Rabaul and hopefully catch some major warships there. I'm not sure I want to give their position away or not. If I grab the Marshalls quickly, I can relocate them there and probably threaten Truk directly with a surprise raid. I don't want him to be prepared for such an event yet and anyone smarter than General Burnside would realize I can move them quickly there from Oz rather quickly and be prepared. I have no idea if he has his interior bases build up or left them to rot.

Invaders are a day away from landing at Male. The defenders there have been pounded daily by heavies from Colombo.

Likewise, Marshalls invaders plodding along, unseen.

KS appears to have pulled his planes out of Ranchi, as my five sweeps were unopposed. I'll keep the sweepers up another turn, but I'm flipping the bombers to ground attack now.

Cuttack troops are getting hit good also. I'll take a poke there with my two LRRP bridges and see if they've weakened.

I'm pulling another Indian division from Bezwada north towards Patna to join the fight there. About 4 more divisions are at Bezwada, but they aren't 100%, so they'll continue to rest up. I'm hoping I can reach a tipping point soon. If I can kick him out of Ranchi, Calcutta will be the only Japanese island in India.

That's probably as big a strike as I've seen come from there, including prior raids on Makin. Come to think of it, they were probably intended for Makin convoys. The fighter losses should hurt. Two days until everybody reaches the staging point at the hex SW of Rongelap. On the third, landings should start. Related to this, I've launched 7 subs from Pearl and Midway to blanket the Marianas in preparation for my next move. Two CVLs will catch up and merge with my other carriers next turn, adding nearly 40 more fighters to the mix.

As a lark, my troops at Cuttack launched an attack. The IJA troops there had been pounded pretty good and air claimed at least 40 tanks just today. It turns out I won, so my troops will chase his almost all the way to Calcutta.

My ground attacks near Ranchi went nowhere. I'll just keep piling in more bodies.

Male got grabbed in a single turn. I have to unload everyone before loading them up again. There's next to zero port capability there, so it looks like not everyone can disembark anyway. Next move out there will be Diego.

Roi-Namur's airfield got clobbered. Two squadrons each of F4Us and P-38s safely escorted everyone over and the airfield's half dead now.

They'll be going again next turn. Unfortunately, the Razorbacks don't quite have the range to get there, so it's the bubbletop Jugs and the Mustangs doing the lifting. Most of his fighters were LRCAPping the escapees from Cuttack and that one open ground hex south of Ranchi. They probably won't next turn.

At this point, I can probably say that the IJAAF in India will pretty much be finished. Another day or two of sweeps and then I'll send the heavies in to finish off Calcutta's airfield. One less dimension to worry about.

The USA 41st Infantry division is a day or two from the hex NW of Ranchi. That may push things over the top in that hex and I can start cracking open things. The Razorbacks will also be ground attacking that hex.

My Marshalls invaders reached their staging point 2 hexes NE of Roi-Namur. They're splintering now this turn. Next turn, troops should land there and at Kwajalein. Probably the next day, troops will hit the further out locations of Maloelap and Eniwetok. No Japanese, apart from naval search flew from there today. I brought down another Emily. I'm guessing the squadrons there are getting withdrawn right now. I would. I hope I brought enough troops for the job, as historically, I've been caught short before. Roi-Namur and Maloelap also have Amphib Force HQs supervising the landings on their command ships.

I couldn't help myself and I've committed the B-29s at Portland Roads to a strike on Rabaul's port. I'm hoping I catch a bunch of valuable ships there. Maybe I'll get lucky and catch KB. They're within normal range, so bunches of bombs will drop from them. Anything there should get splattered good.

On the ground my two para units south of Ranchi got attacked and driven out.

That was easy. The follow on base forces are already enroute and should arrive within three days or so. The HQ's already heading back to Pearl, and once the supplies are off-loaded, the troops will head back also.

The Kwajalein invaders seemed to take the long way there, so they'll unload, along with Maloelap and Eniwetok next turn. It looks like all the ships and planes he had sitting here have long flown the coop.

I plan on pulling up stakes at Midway and turning Roi-Namur into my new forward sub base. It'll take a while to get everyone relocated here. When the airfield's built up enough, the B-29s will also transfer over.

04 July 1944

Grudge match.

The other landings in the Marshalls didn't go quite as well as Roi-Namur. I had no battleship with the Maloelap landing and as a result, the destroyers got mauled pretty good by the shore batteries. At Eniwetok, about 1,000 troops were lost in the landing, weakening them quite a bit. At Kwajalein, Arizona ate over 50 hits from shore and is on fire. I got 1-1 odds on Kwajalein and Maloelap and only 1-2 on Eniwetok. This may grind out a bit. Air from Makin is helping with Maloelap. If necessary, I can use troops from Roi-Namur to help. With what I landed there, I could probably spare a division to each of the other island. The ASuW TF of cruisers and a battleship at Roi-Namur will go to bombard Maloelap. I suppose I shouldn't have gotten too optimistic, but I should be able to wrap these up in time -- just a little longer than expected.

At Midway, most of the ships are pulling out for Roi-Namur. A dry-dock and an AR will stay until the dozen or so subs there are repaired.

The base forces for Roi-Namur are about two days from landing. A bunch of airplanes are departing from Pearl to populate the new base.

In India, I stood down the sweeps over Calcutta, as losses were greater the second day. KS LRCAPped his troops escaping Cuttack and beat up my bombers hitting them a bit. Everyone's standing down for a few days while I take some time to recover. KS finally started working on the minefields I've planted near Calcutta, with three AMcs working on them. Unfortunately for him, two of them succumbed to mines. My attack in the hex NW of Ranchi was successful. The troops there are heading due south to overload the next adjacent hex. Moving them into Ranchi wouldn't push that over the top at this point. I'd like to have that base surrounded.

My last straggling carriers from India/Cape Town arrived at Pearl last turn. 4 Essexes and a CVL. One will need about 50 days in the yard. The rest should be ready in a week.

This is a good healthy reserve for me to fall back on. I'm guessing KS probably wants no part of my other CV TF, as 400 fighters contested his one attack on them. Zekes would get reaped by that. I think Iowa was with them, too. After the Marshalls are secure, I'm tempted to hunting with all my CVs.

Mostly good news today.

Kwajalein and Maloelap both fell. I was worried about an ongoing fight at these spots, but the follow-on attack carried the day. Maloelap was worrying me, as my CVEs decided to support the landings with their guns, which I was not happy with. Some DDs and transports there got beat up, but everyone should be able to make it back. I just need to work on getting a good supply system up for there. I can reasonably declare the Marshalls secure. I'll deal with the little islands at my leisure, or, most probably, just let them starve. The aerial and naval strikes on Maloelap, I think, helped push that one over.

Eniwetok, on the other hand, failed. The troops decided to evacuate on their own and everyone's already enroute back to Pearl. I won't worry about it. It only has a level 1 airfield, with little room for growth, so it can just be another bypassed garrison.

At Pearl, I have bunches of troops prepping for Guam, Tinian and Saipan. I guess I also had at least two divisions prepping for Truk, so I may take a go at that base also. That would bring the entire SE Pacific Theatre to a screeching halt. The Marshalls troops will also start prepping for the Marianas when they get back. I have more than enough troops for the job. I just need lots more transports, as I can't carry all of them in one go. I had several more units destined for Kwajalein sitting at Pearl, as I ran out of room. I'll kick off the next move in 2-3 months tops. I can be on a more historical timeline by then.

No sign of KB and they didn't contest this. It will only be worse in the Marianas, as I'll add another five fleet carriers to the mix, at a minimum. Haven't looked at the schedule, but maybe more will also show by then.

India's quiet, with little air activity right now, and the only combat being bombardments at Ranchi. My winning troops from the NW hex are moving south to push that over. He does have one unit to the west moving north, probably trying to run around my back. My troops enroute from Bezwada will stop that when they arrive. An HQ is due to arrive at Patna, with a nice radius, so hopefully that turns combat in my favor also.

Nicely done! I would take that victory any day. Nice to see a well thought out and executed plan get carried out in the Marshalls.

With the Marshalls being wrapped up and a significant number of troops now needing new targets its time you come up with a late 44 strategy. I understand the appeal of the Marianas but I fear a single axis advance in the CentPac without a supporting advance in the SoPac or SwPac may be risky. Your southern flank would be very long and very exposed. Even though you did a nice job sinking those ships in Rabaul, the base is still a great threat and easily defended given the current geography with a few hundred fighters on CAP. The Japanese could potentially cause great havoc to your supply lines with sorties from Rabaul or Kavieng. Should you get bogged down in a Marianas campaign, which seems likely for a number of reasons, this could be a very serious issue. Because it's going to be incredibly difficult to simultaneously support and protect your troops in the Marianas while protecting those lines of communication to the east. I highly recommend an invasion of the Solomons first which puts Rabaul in its crosshairs while simultaneously cutting off everything to the south which is quite substantial. With the Solomons in your hands it will be much easier to protect that flank as you will have patrol planes monitoring Rabaul and its environs.
