Not sure about WITW

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Not sure about WITW

Post by MichealJR »

I have been playing WITPAE since April 2015, full campaign when I have time. I am up to June 1942. Probably one of the best most complicated simulations I have played with.
I picked up WITW while on sale for $60. Now I wished I hadn't. For some reason it really pales to WITPAE. One week turns, somewhat simplistic land combat, and complex air phases as well as some buggy counter visuals.
I find I do a couple of turns, then go back to WITPAE. Is WITW really worth it? There is no a no refund policy so I am asking if I am giving the game a far chance?

You play WitP (even AE) and you think WitW land combat is simplistic? It's ok for islands but I wouldn't like to play major land campaigns with it. And the air phases are complex in WitW? Really? At least you get control of them with a relatively few clicks and the game flies the missions you ask for...

Buggy counter visuals? I would report them, think Red Lancer would be interested[;)]. Never seen them myself.

But in reality, how long did it take you to learn WitP? Play a couple of turns of that and you really wont be in to the game. Have you started with Husky and worked up?

there was nobody that moaned more about WITE when i first got it, couldn't do nothing, apart from die a lot it seemed, have no idea how the Nato counters worked either, then along came red and made me some nice ones, never looked back, mind you, in 4 or 5 years only managed to play maybe less than 20 hours on it, where as WITW has me logged at more than 200+ hours before i gave up counting, so for me, what i'm trying to say is give it time, as the game as big as this needs it, it's complex, sometimes way over my head as i'm a beginner, a leaner and still play with FOW off on normal now, but did play in easy for ages, i've never made a mistake in my life with a game, either i love it and play it, or try for ever and a day until it either beats me, or i beat it, might take years, sometimes i leave them and go back years later, but so far none have ever been put down as bad or unplayable, maybe not my type, but that's not the games fault but mine for buying it.

so, give it time, learn how it works, how it plays, play on a level that suits your ability and don't be shy to turn it down or up, for me easy and enjoyable with the odd win, is better than being hammered and no enjoyment.

so take your time, as if you play WITPAE, you sure have patients in my book[&o]

Yeah. Weird on the counters. One day I started the game and all the airborne units just had letters or weird symbols. Only if I click on one and on the left side could see the CV, etc. Then yesterday, I moved a unit via naval movement (Just doing Italy Campaign right now) and when it landed the CV 5-5 were a very unusual font. and bold.
Not a big deal, just weird. I chalked it up to Windows 10 and reloading fixes the issue.
WITPAE I am still learning. It is just one of those games you keep saying one more turn/day. WITW is complicated and maybe I just need to play more. There are times when I load the saved game I have been working on and play for a couple of hours before life interrupt.
I guess you can say WITW does not have the draw that WITPAE does for me and I feel guilty about buying the game (my Christmas gift to me) when I have so many others I have not played in a while. I appreciate the responses and will endeavor to just sit down and play it.

1.01.12 is the file version. Like I said not a big deal. Does not happen often and does not affect gameplay. If it happens again, I will try for a screen shot.
