No Resort Base design?
No Resort Base design?
I've had this trouble before, and I've never figured it out. I want to build a resort base, but I don't have a design for one - not even an obsolete design. It just doesn't show up in the list. (Awhile ago, I got a warning in the game that I didn't have a non-obsolete design, too. But I've no idea how to fix that.)
Do I need a larger construction size? I've already researched Enhanced Construction, which gives me a maximum base size of 900. I've also researched Transport (for Passenger Compartments) and Entertainment and Medical Systems. What else do I need?
I wish the game would tell us these things. The Galactopedia really has minimal information. With a game this complex, we really need the details.
And as long as I'm asking, do I need to build a resort base at colony worlds, too? Or does the fact that I've got a colony there take care of tourism?
Thanks.

RE: No Resort Base design?
If ship design is on auto then the AI will design a resort base once passenger storage and recreation centers are researched. If ship design is manual, however, you will have to design your own. In the design screen, click add new, then make your resort design.
Edit: Resort bases can be placed on planets with ruins, or special places with a scenery bonus. Your passenger ships will automatically engage in tourism.

RE: No Resort Base design?
Resort bases can be placed and will function anywhere, as long as you're selecting the construction ship and manually ordering construction rather than selecting a location and using its 'queue construction of xyz here' buttons. Places with ruins or scenery bonuses just give resort bases some form of bonus, they are not required for resort bases to function.Resort bases can be placed on planets with ruins, or special places with a scenery bonus.
Placing resort bases relatively close to highly populated areas seems to help increase their revenues, though that's anecdotal and not tested to my knowledge.
Colonies don't generate tourism revenue, as far as I know; only resort bases will generate that kind of bonus income. Resort bases make for a reasonable alternative to spaceports for planets in places where you don't need or want a full shipyard, as they come standard with everything you'd want for a colony that you don't want to give the shipyard capabilities offered by a full spaceport - Commerce, Medical, and Recreation Centers are standard features of resort bases, resort bases have a reasonable number of docking bays for low-traffic colonies, and resort bases have reasonable defensive capabilities for a light space station and if you need or want heavier defenses you can just build a few defense bases.Or does the fact that I've got a colony there take care of tourism?

While technically true, I've never seen tourists at these resorts. Assuming the Galactopedia is still true...
"Tourists will only choose to visit resorts where the scenery is sufficiently appealing. They also don’t like to travel too far. So build your resort bases at the most scenic locations that are reasonably close to large, wealthy colonies."

I confirm: in my experience resorts placed on normal planets don't seem to be visited by tourists.

As long as we're talking about resort bases, the old mining station - starbase trick doesn't work with resort bases. Thought I'd try.

eeerrrr. I was really looking forward to this..
assuming you tried Resort Bases on everything from rocks to gas only clouds etc.
Policy menu set to "high tourism" or maybe its "very high"
That would have been a huge game changer for me.. I'd be putting up resort bases every system haha.

As has been said if the AI is on auto for Ship Design they should be designed for you when you have the necessary components but you also need to make sure that the Resort Base sub role is ticked in the Empire Policy screen.
If your in manual then you should be able to design anything given the necessary components but that doesn't mean you can build them.

Thanks, guys. I do have ship design set to automated, although I adjust the design of most of my bases and ships, so the box for Resort Base - among others - isn't checked.
I suppose the game started that way, since I was designing resort bases in my last game. However, I was doing the same thing with my military ships and bases, yet I still got AI versions of those when I started a new game.
I did create a resort base manually, but I have no idea if I got the right amount of docking ports, cargo bays, etc. I wish Distant Worlds would continue to create AI versions of all my ships and bases, even when I don't use them, so that I could at least check to see where my designs differ from theirs.
Oh, well, this will work, anyway. Thanks for the replies!
PS. This is starting off as an unusual game, so far. I've got another empire right beside me, well within my own starting territory. In fact, when my first exploration ship discovered them, I lost a third or more of my starting territory to them. Oddly enough, I started with their species on my home world, too - in addition to the humans. And they settle the same planets we do. I've never had a start like this, but it should make the game interesting.

a precisation: I do not placed Resort Bases on everything, but in 3 different "DW:U experiments games" I placed a couple of Resort Bases on normal location to see what's happen with them.
in all 3 games I experienced NO visits by tourists in that locations.

I tried a resort base star base, but it didn't work. Imagine ten resort bases at one location. I guess that only works for mining.

ok do you remember if they were near huge colonies though? meaning have a lot of population and either in the system or very near?
I'll just try it too...
it's probably best to test this late game.. when colonies are filled up etc..

RE: No Resort Base design?
No resort base should cost more than 1000cr per year in upkeep. If it does then you are doing it wrong.
You only need 1 Recreation center. Adding more does nothing.
Tourists are delivered in groups of 20K people. Your passenger bays hold people an units measured in the millions. It is highly unlikely that your resort will ever need more than one or two passenger bays.
If your resort is armed you are wasting your time.
