Buying One - Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue vs GG WiTE

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Buying One - Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue vs GG WiTE

Post by Emperor_nero »

Hey,

I think this is my first post here. I'm rather new to the world of Grognard-ery, but I do own a fair collection of board hex and counter wargames. I'm looking to get into the computer side of the hobby because of lack of space and time to set up my lovely collection of GMT offerings. I've come to the decision that I am going to buy one or the other. I've read reviews. I've watched what I could find for videos, with WiTE having plenty of coverage but DC:CB having little to no coverage on the YouTubes. WiTE is truly a monster, but it looks like it can be a manageable monster if broken into chunks to digest slowly. DC:CB looks a little friendlier, but looks a lot more limited in scope. I'm turned off by the lack of small scenarios, because I don't always want to run a full campaign. Sometimes I just want to push to Leningrad.

Here is what I've read and think:

WiTE:
More detailed
Larger scope
Active community
Smaller scenarios
Lots of documentation/videos
Steep learning curve
Possibly overwhelming

DC:CB:
Friendlier
Small scope
Limited information/videos
More manageable
Cheaper
Nice looking

So here is the question that I am sure has been asked a million times, what are the pros and cons of each and what do you think I should pick up?

You should have made your decision few days ago...there was a Slitherine madness on Steam last week. Both titles on sale.

I own both and to have them isn't the wrong decision :D

Yeah. I realized that and couldn't decide/didn't have the money at the time. Now I have freed up some spare cash.

If I could only own one it would be Wite, but both games are excellent.

Hard choice.

If it weren't for the absolutely unique trait of having various "real" people to deal with in DC3:CB, I'd say WitE is better in other aspects. But this thing where you have to read letters from generals, beg superiors for help, be nice to people you can't order around, and trying to have subordinates listen to you is really special, there is no other of its kind on the market. Hard choice, both games are very good. Get one, and then wait for the other to go on sale.

edit: I thought you were thinking about buying DC3, but it seems you want to buy DC2. Cards are nice and I like regimental scale, but I don't like that there is only half of the front (I don't like the effect of map edge in war games, results in some artificial tactics - in large WitE campaigns this problem doesn't happen too often).

Hi, morvael.

I think you are referring to DC: Barbarossa (the role-play, relations stuff, that is really great), but the OP was asking about DC: Case Blue, where IIRC there are no such aspects

Air system in DC:CB is totally borked (not that WITE is a lot better, but its better). And the OOB in DC:CB is not anywhere near the standard of WITE.

I like the logistical system in DC:CB better though. Much better fuel management system.

Overall though I think WITE is better. I played WITE for about 3 years straight. And I keep coming back. Whereas I put DC:CB down after about 2 months and never returned.

I also considered getting DC:B, but Case Blue interested me more from a historic standpoint.

Broke down and bought WiTE and just spent an hour and a half pushing counters around and loving it.
