Post by Zorch »

'A trunk left by a German soldier fighting on the Eastern front in WWII is dug up in Russia'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ussia.html

'Russian historians uncovered the trunk in the Nevsky Pyatachok area. It contained the possessions of a Nazi soldier fighting on the Eastern Front. Cigars, alcohol, uniform, shoes and a wallet are all included in the trunk. Historians have started search to find soldier's family to return belongings.'

Thanks Zorch - I must admit I cannot help my first thought which is that this is probably fake. If not, if it is genuine then there may well be an interesting story to be told....

Again, another story that could be true? But my first thought is water damage I see none. 80 years of winters under ground. That trunk cant be that well sealed as to not have water seepage. But who knows.

A hoax was my first thought, too.

I think its a hoax. The cigar box is completely full and they look in good condition...after 73 years.

It looks reasonably legitimate. A well made, metal German trunk with a seal could have protected the contents. If you look closely, the cigars appear to have some mould or something on them. If some of those products haven't been made for a long time then it lends credibility to the story.

There appears to be some slight mould on the shoes and possibly some of the clothing too; it's often products with organic materials that mould first, so it would make sense that it's the tobacco, leather and cotton(?) that's starting to go. Interesting! I hope it's not a hoax.
