New Mexico did not reach West Coast. She nearly sank off the Marshalls when temp repairs failed. Ducked into the floating drydock at Kwajalene. Out for the war most likely.

Johnjohn, welcome back.

Observation. I like what I see re: Buna and Milne Bay. You should have both in the bag soon.

Comparing progress at Milne Bay vs Buna... I'm rapidly coming to a conclusion that Buna is probably not winnable and even if it is, winning there is unlikely to be worthwhile. My view of this is coming from two directions - (1) time factor and (2) most Allied ground forces in SW Pacific theatre are tied up in what is basically a quagmire on New Guinea (the majority of these LCU at Buna). Reinforcing Buna is not a viable option, it's dumping more and more Allied LCU into said quagmire. Except for US 5th Marine Division all Allied ground combat forces in SW Pacific are committed. Pillager landing Japanese at Darwin now placing further demands on Allied ground forces in SW Pacific theatre with the need for establishing defensive positions in the interior of NW Australia.

In my campaign, a reserve of fully operational Allied combat division LCU is at a premium in the combined South/SW Pacific theatre area. I have a modest force of US division in Central Pacific, some of these involved in an amphibious operation that is now underway. What it comes down to in the ground war is that I need to win somewhere.

Some of the issue comes down to the "overkill" level of fortifications and stacks of Jap LCU's I seem to be encountering everywhere. With level 6 fortifications probably existing at even the smallest Jap bases, invading anything requires a matching stack of Allied divisions which simply does not exist in AE or historically.

Southwest Pacific: Amphibious supply unloading ops continue from Allied invasion TF at Milne Bay, 287K supply now on shore. Ships at Milne Bay with supply cargo still aboard ordered to depart Milne Bay – these ships bound for Port Moresby to unload remaining supply before return to Australia.

Summary of Operations 10/25/44

Southwest Pacific: Allied forces capture Milne Bay.

Amphibious supply unloading ops at Milne Bay were concluded this game turn, all transport ships now departed Milne Bay. Allied naval surface combat TF launched a night bombardment attack on Milne Bay (use up remaining ammo) before its departure back to Australia for replenishment and minor ship repair.

Current base status at Milne Bay – airfield service damage 33, runway damage 22, port damage 69. 218K supply is on hand in Milne Bay, no fuel points. Airfield size at Milne Bay now at 3(5), port size 4(3) – plans are to expand both to maximum sizes. Summary of Operations 10/25/44 (continued)

Yellow Sea: US patrol sub (SS Croaker) attacked and damaged in attack by Ki-49 Helen air patrol at hex location 93, 61. Reported damage to SS Croaker - system damage 14, float 5, returning to base at 19 kts.

NW Australia: Allied ground forces being prepared for defensive positions in the interior of NW Australia. Current plans are to establish this position at Tennant Creek using mainly restricted-command Australian units – currently including 1st and 5th Australian Divisions plus supporting units under HQ’s II Australian Corps and Australian 1st Army. One US division is in mainland Australia (5th Marine) at this time – this unit plus an assortment of US artillery and tank LCU will form a reserve as required.

Even with the fall of Milne Bay, Allied ground forces in Australia and SW Pacific theatre area are extended to a point where further offensive operations using land forces will be difficult without reinforcement from other areas especially given additional requirement for ground defensive positions in W and NW areas of mainland Australia.
