Maybe a Bug

Post by Harrybanana »

Helpless could you look at my server game with Liquid Sky and tell me why my Canadian 2nd and 3rd Infantry divisions and 4th Armoured are not refitting to full strength. They have all been stuck at their current strength for several turns now. The bottleneck for all of them is rifle squads and recon vehicles. This is probably not a bug and there is a logical explanation, but I am stumped as to what it is. The 3rd Canadian is particularly bad having been stuck at 25% of its infantry squads for about 10 turns. All 3 units are in good supply, not adjacent to enemy units and set to refit. I have 12,000+ Cdn manpower and lots of CW rifle squads in the pool. I also seem to have enough Humber MkIIIs and White scout cars. I can see why the mud might slow down the flow of replacements, but it seems to be shut off completely. Also, other nearby units have managed to rebuild.

I've downloaded the save and will use it to generate a save before the next Allied logistics phase. It does look suspicious that just the light armored cars and rifle squads aren't filling up when there appears to be manpower and equipment and freight. These situations are always hard to figure out given the way the system works. Easier to figure out why something is happening than why it isn't. I'll try to have Gary or Pavel take a look at it next week.

Thanks Joel. I'll need those guys soon. I suppose I could pull them back to sit on a depot to see if that works. But if there is a bug I would like to have it found for future games.

Ok, Gary reports that there was indeed a bug here, and he's made a fix for it that seems to work in his initial test. When an element is in a situation where it might want to upgrade to a newer element, and at the same time might want to consider swapping to an element it has a lot more of in the pool, it can get into a situation where it does neither. He think it's fairly rare, but he found the smoking gun on how this could happen, and the Canadian elements involved were in that situation. We'll get this into test later this week. It's in a complicated part of the code so any change is risky, and could use some testing before it goes out in the next public beta. Just as a suggestion, you might try taking the unit off refit.

Okay I'll take them off refit. Which is kind of funny because in order to try and fix this I did exactly the opposite; taking all other units off refit and leaving the affected units on refit.

Refit off probably won't do anything, but it can't hurt.

I just ran a test with the new fix and sure enough all those Canadian divisions filled up right away. They just ended up being caught by the bug. One took in 5000 men in one turn. A few of the British units seem to have benefited as well, although they were taking in just hundreds of men in most cases (900 incoming was by far the most). In your save it was really just the Canadians that had been greatly impacted by the bug. Of course it will take more tests to see if something there are any noticeable side effects of the fix.

You know if I was a paranoid conspiracy theorist I would begin to think that somebody at 2by3 has it in for us Canadians. Its because we have a sexy Prime Minister and National Health Care isn't it?

Joel, any idea when a new beta will be coming out that fixes this bug? I have reached the point in my game with LS that it may start having a real effect.
