SF setting

Post by NEHT »

I bought this game because i wanted to use it for my military, near-future science fiction setting, but as there is no option to edit databases (i need railguns, lasers, etc. in many versions and also armors or even force fields), so i have no use of this game. I am not saying that CMANO is bad and i can understand reasons why database editing is practically exluded, but i am sad. Maybe someone could direct me to some other game, where i can implement my vision?

You can always make your own game, it's hard but not impossible [:)]

Full edit was never a feature listed anywhere. If this is not the case please show us where you saw that so we can correct the error.

Good luck on your novel!

From the Steam description.
Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations is the ultimate military simulator for modern military conflicts. Designed with a huge emphasis on detail, realism, accuracy and flexibility, Command allows you to simulate and direct any historical or hypothetical air or naval engagement from 1945, at any scale, including strategic nuclear war.
As stated, it is aimed at 'current' platforms, plus some hypothetical ones that could have been or are possible soon. There are a lot of complex data models underlying this game so altering data would no longer give the expected 'huge emphasis on detail, realism, accuracy' result. [My opinion anyway]

Not sure how long ago you bought the game but steam are generally pretty gracious with returns if you're not happy within the first few days.

Why dont you just try and get into it? start playing it and learning about the weapons/sensors and how they work. The DB is huge and covers probably just about any aircraft or warship/sub you can think of since after WW2 up to the near future. I bought the game because i had only a mild interest in air/naval warfare with very little knowledge and was tired of war strategy games that are land based such as Theater of War and Combat Mission. I've become totally engrossed in it and the only games i play now are Command and Falcon BMS (a combat flight sim mainly based on the F-16 but includes other a/c you can fly). Seeing as you've paid for it, give it a go it may well have you hooked like the rest of us.

If you are looking for a space opera setting (force fields, etc.), Command is not the game you want.

If you are interested in near future hard sf stories (e.g., a Sino-Japanese war in 2030), it is very much the game you want.

If you are interested in alternate history stories (e.g., a resurgent French Empire with four carrier battle groups starts beating the crap out of other European countries in 2010...NATO falls apart...America stays neutral and an Anglo-German alliance must face down the French Beast)...Command is very much the game you want.

If you want to tinker with hundreds of existing types of ships and submarines, swapping out weapons and sensors, creating an almost infinite number of possible variants (e.g., LCS with lasers instead of 30mm guns), which will not be part of the official database but which you can save to your scenarios and which other people can copy and use in their own scenarios (which is kind of like being able to edit the database)...Command is very much the game you want.

Enjoy.
