Where do the pilots go?

When a carrier is sunk and pilots trapped on board, where do the pilots go? Are they gone forever or back to the pilot pool? I understand that the squadrons will be rebuild in a couple of months, but don't know about the pilots. Thanks in advance.

I can be wrong but I believe that in UV reality they are dead, squadrons will be rebuild, but AI will generate new pilots to fill the vacancies.
