Air War Issues - Altitude afffects

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Air War Issues - Altitude afffects

Post by Ralzakark »

I’ve been playing around with the strategic air war, especially the night campaign as it is the one that interests me the most. There are a number of issues I have seen. The first is the loss rate for Mosquito bombers which are shot down with depressing regularity, in far, far greater numbers than historically.

Here is an example from a test I ran. No FOW, route planned to avoid all flak so that no aircraft would be damaged by AA fire. Three aircraft lost in this one combat alone.

So my question is this – given the Mosquitos were flying at 37,000 feet and the service ceiling for both types of interceptor shown here is 29,530 feet, how did they manage to shoot any down at all? Does altitude have any affect on air combat?

You are probably losing aircraft through operational losses.

From the 1.07 Update-

Increased air group mileage usage when flying over 25K (by 10% each 1000ft up to 100%)
Added extra pilot fatigue when flying over 25K.

Running the turn again I get the following losses - would operational losses show as this?

Mosquito bomber losses for September 1944 where 1xMk IV, 5x Mk XVI, and 6xMk XX for a total of 12 aircraft either failed to return or written off on landing out of 1,715 sorties, so if the losses are operational I have lost more aircraft in 200 sorties than Bomber command did for the entire month.

Yes.

Do you have a save, please? Thanks.
