Scenario for testing: Death from the Shadows, 2021

Hello

Here is a scenario taking place in 2021, in which Norwegian Forces battle against Russian Forces in a limited engagement.

The Russians have a considerably larger amount of Firepower over the Norwegians, but the Norwegians have the advantage of stealth and sophistication.

The goal is to eliminate a Russian SAG that is traveling down the length of Norway's spine.

Let me know what you think needs to be changed.

NOTE: Scoring and briefings have not been done yet, these will be done when the base scenario design is finalized as I don't feel like messing with them beforehand if more serious work needs to be done which will alter what goes into each.

Kilo teleport area has been moved further away from ship starting locations.

Formation of the Russian SAG should have the Udaloy in a better position

All SAGs spaced out more.

Edit 2:

Russian SAG Reduced from 5 ships to 3 (one Gorshkov and Gremyaschy removed)

Russian Fighters now fight defensively over their SAG

Ready time of second Fullback Strike reduced to 4 hours from 6 (to allow possible second strike from them).

ROE changed, both sides now on tight except for sub surface (still free)

Norway proficiency changed to veteran

well.... just started.... the P 960 Skjold... the one station to the east was destroyed almost immediately on starting the scenario...?

you should name your skjold's... so all three are not just "P 960 Skjold"...

your formations are to tight... and the udloy needs to be out in front a little more.. its drifting back behind the group....

formations are arranged differently for different tactical situations/considerations.... you should read up on it....

Woops, forgot to name the Skjolds. Also, I placed some Kilos in the Littoral waters (it's a random teleport), but with your feedback I'm now thinking I should move them further away from starting locations.

Do you have any recommended reading for Naval Combat spacing and arrangement?

Still need to find some good reading for SAG composition. I'll be sure to fix it up the soonest I know what to do with it.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated if they are forthcoming.

here is a decent compromise defensive formation for red SAG.....

*high value unit (ustinov) in center...
*best ASW sensor platform (udaloy) lead on path of intended motion (PIM).... sprint and drift.. 11nm to 30nm ahead depending..
*AAW ffg's on primary threat axis.. while doubling in ASW coverage.. and aiding protection of ustinov...

this is a compromise formation for the anticipated threat in this mission...
if it was an ASW mission.. they could be spread out more...

mission:
*May M Station... reference point rp-908... should be a fixed rp to the red SAG = [F]rp-908
*Screening ASW Patrol.. rp-905-906-907... should be rotating = [r]rp-905-906-907
that way they will move withe group...

i believe the russians should have a continuous CAP over the SAG to protect their search assets...

i believe that norway should have a proficiency rating of veteran...

the russian SAG is real strong...

i believe that ...Doctrine/ROE/WCS should be tight... except sub-surface = free....

Nice little scenario.

Had no trouble picking off the Flankers on CAP by sending F-35s in silent ECOM mode to whittle them done.

Then arranged a couple of NSM strikes from remaining F-35s and the surface craft to sink the Russian SAG.

Finally a P-3 on ASW sweep picked up a Kilo hugging the coastline and an NH-90 destroyed that.

However, just 2 small points...

1) Is the scoring broken? I sank the SAG, killed the CAPs (and a Helix & May) and dispatched a Kilo with no losses to my forces - only to get a score of 0 ??
2) The Flankers on CAP never seemed aggressive enough to come after me and investigate contacts. I can understand with F-35s as I was sneaking up on the them, but I had a P-3 and an NH-90 emitting to fix the SAG position and they never came off station (NH-90 was pretty close) to hunt me down our investigate.

All in all though a good mission. Those NSMs are lethal!

As a fellow scandinavian (assuming that you are), will try this mission out and report back.

Your briefing mentions 5 ships in the russian SAG, i only found 3. I didn't do very well, most losses were avoidable. Also, i think due to Russian tight doctrine i was able to just roll up on Su-35's and gun them down with the Equalizers ;D

Russian diesel subs should have radars off in their EMCON.

Also not enough AMRAAMs in magazines, and maybe I would like some AIM-2000A if you have some around.

Funny though Russian subs have SAMs (uh carp).

@Lordflashheart The scoring is not done yet, I figured I would wait until actual balance is finalized. I took a break from this scenario just because I felt like doing other things for a bit. But soon this scenario is going to get some serious overhauling.

@Skjold I am not actually Scandanavian (I'm from New England, USA) but I like Norway's Geography because of the cool littoral stuff that can be done (and in such close proximity to a possible enemy.)

Will work on making the Su's more aggressive and the like and will add scoring. You will see these improvements most likely by Monday.

I will also update the briefing, the original scenario did have 5 ships, and they were damn difficult to kill!

Before I posted this scenario it even had S-400s sniping things, but that got annoying, so they were ommitted.
