AI not using its attacks

Post by sstratto »

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this . . .

In a couple of scenarios, I have noticed that the AI did not use it shots in defensive fire, direct fire or advance fire phase. In one instance, there was a tiger in woods looking straight at an american tank (8-10 hexes away in open) and no other targets. The American tank shot at the Tiger, missed. Germans turn, no reaction. American tank shoots again and misses. Still no fire back from the Germans. It took a full 2 turns before the american tank finally popped the German. It never fired once at the American tank. It did shoot at some infantry in woods at about the same distance.

Another instance, a squad and officer moved next to a half squad and support weapon (panzerfaust). It did not shoot at the American stack. Next German direct fire phase, the half squad did not fire again. Finally on defensive fire, the Americans broke the German half squad.

I also saw this in the tutorial. The ordnance (gun) did always take the shots it was allowed.

I have noticed this also. Sometimes, I wonder if the AI just doesn't show all of the enemy's out-of-command. Or, else the AI has a table of actions that it rolls on, with do nothing as one of the actions.
The game is afoot!

Peter said there is some randomness there. But when there is a VL empty and it doesn't advance in there it is pretty bad. Also when it is attacking it typically chooses to fire rather than move. (I do realize it is harder to program the AI to attack.)

If there is a table with no-action as a choice, the value must be a bit too high - we should not be noticing it. It should be a one off every so often. I know that a number of us have seen it so it must be occurring more often than intended.

Of course if not all of the out of command markers are shown, that could explain some of it. It still would not explain why the AI would choose to fire at infantry in woods over an armored vehicle that could kill you in the open and not moving.

I too appreciate the difficulty in programming an competitive AI. Overall I am very impressed and pleased at the progress of the community and the game.
