What it tell you?
I do play it on Windows 10 without problems
But you surely have to run it with all the executive rights so right click on the icons and propriity and execute as an executive with all rights
Sorry with my English :)

it doesn't say anything other "dwu has stopped working and needs to close" about 3 seconds after starting it.

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

have you tried any of the forum links from members with the same issues that have got it working fine?

So you did try this?

Try to run the game executable with "Run as administrator" option.

Here is my DxDiag. How do I try to run the game from an admin account? As for anti-virus, I uninstalled mine earlier having read that it could interfere.

I don't think it needs admin privileges, but you enable that with right clicking the program icon/shortcut. On my win 10 start menu I Have to look inside the "more" option there, but there was not a lot of choices to get lost in.

you only needed to add the game exe to the anti virus engine, not uninstall it, you need a AV program on your pc really

System DPI Setting: 120 DPI (125 percent) default it 100%, so games won't work or like it altering from default, while others work fine with it.

Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 Dedicated Memory: 128 MB plus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M so pc is a laptop then, Dedicated Memory: 1995 MB, make sure in Nvidia tools that the right chip is being used for the game and system, as with 2 chips systems, it needs to be told, as the onboard one won't work with the game and will quit out with errors...

all error's are from DistantWorlds.exe as well in report
Open the Nvidia Control Panel and locate Manage 3D Settings. Change, in both Global and Program, the Preferred Graphics Processor to High Performance NVIDIA Processor.
Check if Nvidia is set as the preferred graphic card:

I had the same problem her is the fix (windows 10 x64):
Go to your install folder eg: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Distant Worlds Universe. Double click startup ini and change playmovie 1 to playmovie 0. Save then re-launch game.

Please dear Developers if the game does not start due to the startup movie it won't get a lot of good reviews.
