Thought you guys might think this was interesting. The USS Torsk is a museum boat tied up in Baltimore Harbor. She was built late in WWII and continued on through the Cold War. The pictures are from someone who spent the night aboard her.

I've been inside GUPPY museum boats. I found it interesting how they're (understandably) so similar on the inside to unmodified WWII fleet boats in terms of crew accomodations, the dining room, etc... The Nautilus (which I've also been inside) is different in those factors from either.

I've visited the ARA Santa Fe, ex USS Catfish, a year before it's scuttling.
I was 13yrs old. I almost got vertigo when I looked downwards through the ladder hatch from the sail bridge towards the main hull.

She looks almost seaworthy. They've taken really good care of her.

The HMS Belfast is and has been a museum for some time, and i went on it back in 2006. Served in WW2 where it took part in the battle of North Cape helping to sink the german battlecruiser Scharnhorst. Went on to serve in the Korean war after which was its last deployment and rather than scrapping her, it became a museum. Had a great day out exploring it, will visit it again some day.

Lived in Baltimore for a year or so in the early 2000's (no didn't know Stringer Bell, Bubbles or McNulty). Its amazing how well Torsk is kept up.

Seems to be in much better shape than the Razorback (SS-394) in Little Rock, of course Torsk has been a museum longer. I've been to the "Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum" twice (with kids) and still haven't had time to take it all in. My daughter, who is a shade over 5'3", had trouble getting around that maze!

Stayed overnight on the USS Pampanito in San Francisco as a Boy Scout maybe half a dozen times back in the day. One hell of an experience. Glad I didn't go subs.

In Bremerhaven you can visit the Wilhelm Bauer. The boot was build in 1944 as U2540 and was scuttled in 1945. The boat was salvaged in 1957 and served in the federal German Navy until 1982. Now it's a museum and in really good shape.

I lived in England for 3 years and got to tour HMS Belfast twice. As an engineer I loved seeing the engine room. All those beautiful brass gauges. Belfast is very well preserved. It was immaculate inside and I really enjoyed the tour and the detailed history of the ship that was presented along the way.

It was the same at the National Railway Museum in York. The blackheads of the steam engines were beautiful, in a machinery sort of way. So many lovely brass gauges. And beautifully designed steam locomotives. And I mean in the artistic design and painting. Off the subject completely but a must see for anyone with an interest in railroads or just fine machinery. You can even view the backstop where restorations are in progress, and the warehouse where all the things they don't have room to display are stored. It was like walking into the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark and the huge warehouse. Even my wife said "Uh, oh, we're going to have trouble getting out of here. Best railroad museum I've ever been to. By far. And free! We even got a talk from an older (quite older) gentleman who was a guard on the Royal Train during WW2 (guard = conductor in the US).

My impression is that a group of volunteers (mostly ex-sailors) works enormously hard to maintain the U.S.S. Torsk. I remember seeing a wish-list of theirs online somewhere. A lot of the radio room equipment has been replaced over the years because it was originally taken off the boat when it was stricken. It's one of those never-ending projects people sign up for and have no idea what they're getting into. :-)
