Ahhh the golden age of computers. I remember my first few years fondly. That "FIRST" time (one) I mean. [:D] Knights of the Desert on cassette tape. It was like a replica of Avalon Hill's Africa Korp to me. I musta played a ton of replays of that trying to beat the computer which back then was pretty good AI. Programmed for gaming not pictures. The 8bit graphics weren't anything to write home about but the AI's back then were pretty darn good. That whole series of wargames Battle of the Bulge (Tigers in the Snow), Africa Korps, Battles in or for Normandy, Combat Leader (the original rts game), Battallion Commander, all the Civil War series, Gettysburg, Shilo, Antietam, Sons of Liberty and the grandest of all Battles of Napoleon and War of the Lance. All from SSI back in the day when they made wargames not animated picture games.

I once asked SSG if they would ever do any games like that anymore, where you were the CIC and the AI generals fulfilled your orders.

They said no.

In some ways I think the AIs in the 80's games were better than a lot now.

Yeah, because they were fun simple games and you didn't need hundreds of hours to play them out. Did either of you play the original "Combat Leader" by David Hille I think it were? Only rectangles for tanks and vehicles and teenie tinie chess pawns for infantry, but my goodness the AI was good. All green an ugly looking but the gameplay was fantastic and it had random maps for its time. It was the first rts game I saw, what about you? The upgrade to it was Battalion Commander with better looking units in a cold war sort of battle US vs Russia.

Oh and who could forget the 1985 series of games like Germany85 and RDF and I think they made a 3rd one in the snow in Finland using skies. Never got an interest in that one but the updated graphics with a solid AI were awesome, especially Germany85.

Ah, memories. My first computer (well, OK, my dad's) was the 32k PET. Only the 8k had that diddy keyboard and the integrated tape deck, the 16k and 32k had a full size QWERTY and the tape deck, and later floppy drive were external.

I loved the Commodore stuff, through the 64, 128 and the real gem, the Amiga (had three of them). Absolutely pissed on the early PCs until the mid 90's. I was always narked Microsoft pushed Windows as something new when both Commodore and Atari got there years before.

Yep, the commodore was the King for a good long while. Maybe 10 years? I didn't get my first PC until like 1992 I think it were when I had to have "Conquered Kingdoms" [:D] Nearly $1400 to play one silly game. Boy, were we stupid back then. *Don't try to weasel out you know who we is* [:D]
Shortly after came Civilization I and Master of Magic though and I don't feel disappointed as much.

Thinking back though I might have had Civ I when I had my Amiga 500. So, many computers and games have come and gone since those days. I had a P166 somewhere in there.

Weasel attempt incoming:

I bought an Apple II in 1983, basically to play "Guadalcanal Campaign" -- and it turns out to have been written in BASIC. I can't say I didn't get my money's worth, though, because lots more games followed.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Fortunately I had jumped on the C64 before then (got paid to have my son by a quirk in the insurance between two companies) for like $200 and $150 for the hard-drive and I was on my way to years and years of fun on it for very little cost. Game prices haven't changed that much but back then we thought those prices were extreme.

I remember getting most of Avalon Hill's computer games and they were all in basic ASCii. But, they were fun never the less. Midway, Bismark, Andromeda Conquest, Planet Miners, T.A.C. guess I had most all of them cept that Nuclear one. I went for the comical Nuclear War instead. Still play it today with Dosbox or Dfend.

So many good games back then. What happened? [:D] How did I ever play four episodes of Ultima's? We had to use the keyboard and take notes for everything. Oh and write out own boot disks to boot.
