You have to defend Java because it is a place that the allies can initiate their offensive. BUT, if they get inside of it to say the PI, then all those units are lost...
Well, it's harder for the Allies to cut Java off Singers. If cut then it means Japan was too slow to evacuate Java. Solid point nevertheless

Which means, for Speedy, is not it better to have your better units (and tanks are ones) where they would definitely not be cut off, and definitely see fighting? Also, tanks are impossible to airlift

My view is it makes sense to use the Tank Division on solid land masses where they have mobility and good transport links such as Java, Malaya or PI rather than dinky little islands with no transport links etc? That way they can react and move to where they're needed quickly.

Exactly my view too. It's only the definition of what constitutes a tank-friendly land mass that might differ slightly ;)
Judging from many AARs here Allies' Java invasions are relatively rare things. Most of the time Allies take some cutoff route through those zillion DEI bases into Thailand/China. So Java seems to me just as tank-friendly land mass as Australia - good terrain but prone to being cut off.
PI is better tank land (hard to waltz around), Burma/Thai/China is ideal (constant non-stop fighting in 43/44)

Definitely not Malaya unless you want to lose it. For me, nothing goes to Malaya except what will end up in Singers and lost. Countless AAR's have proven that the allies ALWAYS win the race to Hanoi once they own Moulmein.

Java? already stated my opinion. deathtrap.

PI? Sure ... you should be able to evac it ... hard to get inside the PI although not impossible.

Hi All,

Thanks guys. Well I have 1st Tk Div in Burma and I don't need 2nd Tk Div there especially. I do need more strength in southern SRA and Java. I could re-jig things and send 10th Division (once it's finished operations near PM and Terapo) to Java, keep 1st Guards Division as a reserve in southern SRA and then either send 2nd Tk Div to Luzon or maybe to Burma....hmm.

-----------------

A fairly quiet day all round in SoPac and Burma with no air combat (except the usual pounding of New Caledonia by the Allies). Air transports have now airlifted both 43rd Naval Guard and 2nd JNAD Coy out of Koumac to Lunga.

Most supply has been unloaded at PM now and 2nd Tank Division and Guards Mixed Bde are loading back aboard the transports.

-----------------

Other stuff:

Emily's out of Waingapoe spotted an enemy TF approaching Port Hedland. Not sure if this is the Repulse TF looking to bombard again or the pre-cursor to an invasion force. Sallies from Koepang and Nells at Makassar have been alerted although they'd bomb at extreme range.

A lot of admin stuff completed this turn sending Naval Guards/AF Units/SNLF's to bases such as Marcus Island, Ponape, Woleai Island, Mataram, BF's to Kendari and CD Units (Det. 3rd Special Base Force and 3rd IJN Special Cst Gun Bn) to Rota and Tinian.

Ki-44 IIc's R&D has advanced arrival to 12/43.

Allied subs were a pain today.

SS Puffer heavily damaged TK Nitiei Maru with a torpedo SW of Takao. Luckily she is empty and should limp into Aparri (24/63/11 damage) before repairing at Manila.

SS Truant sank AK India Maru near Phuket (love that name). She was laden with fuel returning from a supply mission to Rangoon.

Hi All,

SoPac:

Just the Motorised Support to load up at PM now and then the transports and KB can depart and KB can get a well earned rest and upgrade in Japan.

LBA from Rabaul caused over 300 casualties on the fleeing Aussies from PM. Enemy P38G's shot down 4 x A6M2's for the loss of 1 x P38G.

An Allied BB TF shelled Koumac overnight destroying and damaging men and material. The positive of this is they destroyed the radar sets for 2 of the AF Unit's that couldn't be flown out. This means the AF units have now taken replacement radar sets in their new base of Munda and Lunga[8D]

---------------

Burma:

A Sweep by 30 x George was surprisingly poor when they met 20 x P40K/Hurri IIc over Mandalay. I lost 8 x George for 3 x P40/Hurri.

No land combat.

11th Division will begin to disembark at Rangoon tomorrow. I'll be keeping this back as Strategic reserve.

-----------------

Other Stuff:

The enemy TF spotted west of Port Hedland only advanced 5 hexes this turn ad is 3 off Port Hedland. No LBA attacked them. I wonder if it's an invasion as they only moved 5 hexes. 3 more subs are moving down from Soerabaja to investigate.

SS I-162 blew up AM Latrobe well to the west of Perth. I assume she was searching for my subs after there recent successes in the area.

B6N2a Jill Facs have advanced to 11/44 start date with no production assigned to them.

Someone's Saki rations need to be lowered as I've somehow produced 3 x Hitachi Amakaze engines despite not having production turned on[;)]

Speedy,

It's too bad you have those three Ha-43 factories at 20(60). Instead of gaining 5% research per day, you're only accumulating 2%. Oops, forgot to clarify that I think each factory has to be at least at 30 with no pending repairs to ensure 1% research per day.

Was that a recent change to add 60 to each?

Yup I wanted to boost production of the engine 2-fold:

Firstly to ensure I have enough production for my total planned plane production using this engine and also to boost R&D once they've repaired

I think larger than 30 size engine factories still only accrue 1 point a day unless realistic r&d is off.

you would need that production anyway, so it's not a huge loss for you.

Does that also apply to R&D planes (as in max I can accrue is 1 point of R&D regardless of fac size in unrealistic R&D)?

As obvert points out, you'll need that production anyway. Essentially all you've lost is two months of accelerating the Ha-43 engine. Once your remaining three factories repair in 60 days, you'll increase your daily research rate.

Hi All,

The Allies invade Port Hedland.

-------------

SoPac:

Usual fare down here.

Still loading Motorised Support of 2nd Tank Division at PM. KB still covering.

Allied LBA pounds New Caledonia.

Zero Sweep over Terapo nets a P38G.

-------------

Burma:

George's and Oscar IIb's CAP trap over Meiktila and I guessed right as an Allied raid loses most of thier escort to my CAP for no loss (6 x P40K).

11th Division should be all ashore at Rangoon tomorrow.

-------------

Other Stuff:

As mentioned above the Allies invade Port Hedland which is not important and is un-occupied. 9th Aus Divisions streams ashore and is guarded by a large SC TF by the looks of it. No CV's are present as 6 x Nell's bomb from Makassar missing a DD and AK. A further 36 x Nell will be at Makassar within 24 hours.

SS I-165 attempted to penetrate the Allied escort screen off the transports but was heavily damaged in the process by DD's (45/70/32). Doubt she'll make Soerabaja.

SS I-22 located DMS Zane leaving the Koumac area after searching for mines and put her under with a torpedo hit.

Hi All,

SoPac:

All of 2nd Tank Divisions Motorised Support should be aboard tomorrow.

KB's bombers left a parting gift on the Aussies retreating from PM causing almost 300 casualties. LBA from Rabaul kept Terapo under cover. KB and Co should be leaving in 2 days time.

Interestingly the nasty Allies launched about 60 B24D's against PM's airfields. About 40 of KB's Zero CAP intercepted and seemed to do well in losing 0 directly to combat but 6 crashed on the way back for a reported 2 B24's. Not great.

No real interference over New Caledonia today.

--------------

Burma:

A further Allied raid on Meiktila is met by a few George's and Oscar's who shoot down 4 x P40K for the loss of 2 Friendlies.

11th Division is ashore and will rail to Meiktila as strategic reserve.

---------------

Other Stuff:

Allies flipped Port Hedland to Allied control. Dinah's flew recon over the area in the AM which allowed 8 x G3M3 to bomb in the PM. They missed their targets (AK's) and lost 1 of their number to AA.

SS RO-36 was left heavily damaged after encountering an ASW TF west if Fiji.

22-23rd June 1943

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi All,

Firstly, a quick question: How do I create those midget sub TF's again? Not the one's from the base screen but those that can be carried to an enemy port on a mother ship and conduct a midget sub attack (a la Pearl Harbour)?

A mixed couple of days. Not a lot of significant action on the 22nd but the 23rd was action packed.

---------------

SoPac:

My transports and KB left the PM area on the 22nd. Looking forward to getting KB back to Truk. Many of the ships will go back to Japan for upgrades.

I decided to send my Nagato/Mutsu covering SC TF to bombard Horn Island. There's a reported 21 fighters, 54 bombers and 40 auxiliaries there. They should bombard overnight tomorrow. My TF has not been spotted either so it should be fun. Naturally my TF FP's will be up as spotters.

I'd also been secretly planning a further little counter-attack recently. Dad landed at Arorae (southern Gilberts) back in March and has been slowly building up the AF (now size 2). I've been keeping a close eye on it with Recon and noticed that over the past month or so there was only 1 LCU there and over 20 fighters. As such I'd been prepping 65th Bde for a counter attack. BB Ise, Yamashiro and Hyuga provided cover and the landing went like clock work:

Ground combat at Arorae (138,137)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 5548 troops, 32 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 216

Defending force 1271 troops, 11 guns, 37 vehicles, Assault Value = 10

Japanese adjusted assault: 188

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 188 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Arorae !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-40K Warhawk: 14 destroyed

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(-), disruption(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(+), leaders(-)

Japanese ground losses:
70 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
524 casualties reported
Squads: 13 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 145 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 12 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 12 (12 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 44 (44 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:
65th Bde /1

Defending units:
119th USAAF Base Force

Once fully unloaded tomorrow I'll quickly re-embark and head back to Truk. This is purely raid to wipe out the forces Dad had and to keep him on his toes. Zero's were providing CAP and a further unit at Tabiteuea strafed the AF in the day for no effect.

Usual Allied pounding of New Caledonia.

I've attached a screenshot of the PM area showing the fleeing Aussies, my 10th Division in pursuit and a blocking Naval Guard force heading from Wau.

----------------

Burma:

Not a lot of action here. The Allies bombed Meiktila again on 23rd and met a mixed force of George's and Oscar IIb's on LRCAP. The enemy lost 1 x P40K and 6 x B25D1 for 3 x George and 1 x Oscar IIb.

11th Division is ashore and heading to Meiktila as reserve.

---------------

Port Hedland:

The Allies are still at Port Hedland unloading. My Nells continue to operate from Makassar flying at 6K bombing the enemy TF's. This will continue until enemy fighters are present. As it is there's no covering CV's and Port Hedland has a size 2 port and size 0 AF.

13 x Nell flew on 22nd and hit AK Governor with 2 bombs.

28 x Nell flew on 23rd and reported hitting DD Nizam with a bomb.

Only 1 Nell has been lost over the these days.

45 x G4M1 have also flown in Waingapoe. There's no Air HQ here though so their mission is to bomb Port Hedland's port to keep it damaged (and prevent AF construction for fighters) and to also hit any damaged ships that Dad decides to disband.

3 subs are also on station outside of the port to intercept any ship fleeing back towards Exmouth.

24-25th June 1943

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi All,

SoPac:

Nagato, Mutsu and Co shelled Horn Island overnight on the 24th moderately damaging the AF and destroying 12 planes on the ground (9 x C47, 2 x B25 and 1 x P40K). They're now on their way back to Truk just passing Milne Bay.

Over 50 enemy 4E, escorted by 12 x P38G, raided PM on 25th. 14 elite Nick A's were flying LRCAP. They claimed 9 x P38G and 1 x B24D1 for the loss of 4 friendlies.

KB are 1/2 way between Rabaul and Truk and, being in friendly waters, all Bombers are dedicated to ASW patrols. 4 enemy subs are claimed hit with SS Haddo reported sunk.

65th Bde is 1/2 loaded back on transports at Arorae.

Usual enemy bombings over New Caledonia. 66th Naval Guard and 12 Naval Const. Bn are almost all evac'd from Koumac by Lunga air transports.

--------------

Burma:

Air action over Magwe on both days.

On the 24th 34 x George were on LRCAP. They handled the P40K escort heavily claiming 11 shot down along with 1 x Liberator II and 1 x B25C. A follow up raid lost 2 x Spit Vc. In return I lost 6 friendlies.

On the 25th a few Oscar IIbs were on CAP and shot down 1 x Spit Vc and 1 x P40K for the loss of 1 friendly.

No action on the ground. Things look stable at Mandalay and Taung Gyi. I have 1200 AV (vs 900 Allied) at Taung Gyi and 2250AV (vs 3000 estimated Allied) at Mandalay.

I've attached a screenshot for update. You'll see a Mixed Bde heading west of Magwe. This will sit on the trail south of Akyab to act as advance warning on that front.

You'll also see 31st Division heading through the jungles SE of Taung Gyi. This is the unit that will hit the trail and aim to shut the door closed on the Allies at Taung Gyi.

------------------

Port Hedland:

G3M's and G4M's raided shipping and the port on both days. Bombing results from between 6-8000 feet were disappointing with not a single hit on enemy ships being claimed. A few hits are sustained on the empty port.

My subs, patrolling outside the port, had success on 24th with I-159 locating the damaged AK Governor and putting her under with 1 torpedo.

------------------

Other Stuff:

SS I-3 located a convoy well to the east of Sydney on the 24th and sank AK Kekerangu over 2 attacks.

SS I-169 left the lone AKL Lahaina heavily burning after hitting her with 13 shells overnight on 25th near Palmyra.

Moving 2 x JAAF BF's, 2 x JAAF Bn's and 1 x Const. Bn to Southern SRA area.
