taking it back

Post by BrianG »

Now I may have been incorrect earlier about losing Baku.

First he will be able to do a mountain raid and cut the rr to the West. This will leave those far west troops in very bad shape. Long term the whole coast can be rolled up.

Second since he is this far(past Mackhack) , I do not like the look of his CV's a few hexes in the rear.

Although his rr connection will take forever to get close down here. He may have only a one time shot now to break thru.

Sort of like Rommel at El Alamein

We shall see... I feel now more confident about holding Baku [;)]

Rough + Inf Corps + Forts.... I have a 70 defensive CV and it will increase

Concerning the moutains, MtnInf can move through but they will be without supply...

If you put at least one infantry corps (loaded with support units), an infantry division, and a HQ in Baku I don't think he can take it. His panzers were not made for heavy urban fighting.....

You should be OK-ish at the moment as his infantry are and his rail head must be a long way away. Where is it?

He needs good infantry down south.

Battle for Baku

Post by STEF78 »

Turn 58, 23th july 1942

Bobo is grinding ten more miles toward Baku. He is also climbing the Caucasus moutains

Image

Strong reinforcements are arriving every week in this area. Derbent will be a hard nut to crack. Baku must stay under russian control!

I'm witing Bobo's 61th turn before showing screens from Bobuchar area....

On the same day I got turns from all my games and was lazy to do any. Sry [:D] Next turn is up.

I really doubt that I have even a slightest chance to capture Baku.

Boguchar's Pocket

Post by STEF78 »

Turn 58, 23th july 1942

As scheduled, Bobo did the job in this area. The ring is well done with 2 Pzd/Mot stacked. 3 possibilities of breaking the encirclement seem playable:
- the CV16 with 2 Pzd
- the 2 CV6 Infs int the north-east
- the CV4/5/6 infs in the east

I will be all-in in the east /north-east. I have better troops in this area

Image

I failed to move the CV5 inf but the corridor is reopened. My units get an extra week of life

Image

The final situation after the fights. Note that some mot units were extracted by Bobo (blue circle)

And the OOB

Are you able to do a naval landing in MakhachKala, assuming its not occupied, even if you only are able to get a division there it might be enough to make him think about pushing any further towards Baku.

I have a lot of ideas to annoy him and force him to spread his units. In the AAR, I only focuse on Baku and Boguchar but there are also some other hot spots, for example Astrakhan.

In fact, I'm every week short of AP as I need them to build rifle corps, tank corps, support units, reassign units...

But it's a good idea! The port of Gusev has never been as active!

I do like the drama of summer '42.

I note you are playing VC260. How close are the Germans to their victory point goal?

It's very stressfull for the russian player. Bobo is an good and imaginative player and I'm alaways fearing a disaster while opening a turn.

The game settings are:

Opponent: 821Bobo
Battle: 1941-45 Campaign - Alt VC260

He is still far from getting an automatic victory.

Obviously, Bobo is following BrianG's advice...

The germans failed on the direct approach to Baku. At this stage the CV70 and 90 are too strong for them.

They decided to try cutting the rail line. It will be the (local) hot spot during the next weeks.

Image

After my moves, I try to consolidate me front line and protect the rail. Note that I have in the Caucasus at least 5 units (included) 2 MtnInf still frozen!!!!!(for example the one SW of Baku) It's unrealistic!!!!
