Intermittent lock up
Windows 10, game patched to all the latest, playing Iron babes.
This happens randomly when setting something e.g I set the unit to rest and the game locked. Task manager show the game is still running but mouse and K/B do nothing. This is not an isolated incident but appears totally random. I lost on hours this time.

RE: Intermittent lock up
What are your command line switches and which shortcut are you using to start the game? There are many threads here on switches for Windows 10.

Try adding -multiaudio
-multiaudio : Invokes a fix that changes audio timing for multicore machines.

RE: Intermittent lock up
I'll try it, thanks.
Command line switches have changes since I last looked. I have two questions:
What does -r Road do?
What's the difference between -px and -pxf etc.
I can find no info in the what's new file.

RE: Intermittent lock up
I think the -r just sets the road map on to start.
Also, I believe the -pxf and -pyf switches allow you to use non standard display resolution settings.

Thanks
Just locked again using
"C:\Matrix Games\WitP AE\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1600 -py900 -cpu4 -dd_sw -altFont -multiaudio -deepColor -skipVideo -archive -wd"
This time I was setting LCU OpMode within an LCU list.

Maybe we need to start looking at your system. How much RAM and Video RAM do you have. What is your video card? How much space is left on your HD? Stuff like that.
Not sure if the monitor can cause lock-up if it can't handle what the vid card throws at it but might as well look at its max resolution vis à vis the card too.
Did you upgrade the video drivers for both card and monitor when you switched to Win 10?

Try adding "-SingleCpuOrders"

Try adding "-SingleCpuOrders"
Is that in lieu of -cpu4 or as well as. The two seem directly opposed.

They aren't. I wrote that code.
The cpu# commands tell the game which processor to use exclusively. If you have a 4+ core processor, it will use core #4 as the only core it uses. If you have fewer than 4, it will default to core #1 instead. Using -cpu4 and -SingleCpuOrders will only use a single core for the orders phase and will then will use all the cores to process the turn. Some computers only see the slow down when entering orders and runs fine, but others process turns slow too. Using -cpu# without -SingleCpuOrders will use a single core for everything.

Impressive, I'll try it.
RE: Intermittent lock up
I see a potential problem with the core usage defaulting to 1. Earlier in this thread or in another thread it was recommended NOT to use 1 because the Windows OS uses that one to do background stuff while the game is running. If your processor is a 2 core type, I would set the CPU to 2.
Did I get that right Bill?

RE: Intermittent lock up
I would use 2 or higher, but the game should work OK as long as everything is running on one processor.

RE: Intermittent lock up
Q: Are you certain the program is actually freezing? I occasionally (like...1/500) find that WITPAE 'hangs' on alttabbing back from something, or less commonly just at random (I tend to fidget with my mouse and it seems to dislike tons of random clicking) - but I have never, literally never in, uh, four years? had an actual proper hangup, it's always either been a full CTD (very rare) or more often just been a case of the graphics ceasing to render - everything is still working, you can do whatever you like, you just won't see anything happen (the giveaway if this is happening to you is that although rendering stops sound doesn't, so you can, say, open the map with a keyboard shortcut and listen for the associated tick sound).
Now, obviously this isn't a great deal of use as far as playing the game, BUT, if you launch another instance of the program and position it exactly on top of the 'frozen' one you can alt-tab between them and use the first one as a reference for where buttons etc are and save a game 'blind' (so to speak). Which...can save a lot of time.
e: obviously you can't exactly test for this since it isn't likely to be something that happens often, but it is worth trying if you happen to experience the game freezing on you.

RE: Intermittent lock up
Bill,
Is the cpu# switch limited to 4?
I am also experiencing lock ups on my new 8 core beast running Win7.
Been mostly playing AE on my old slow dog machine due to the frustration of getting 2/3's of the way through a turn resolution only to lose the time to a lock up.
My lock ups only happen during turn resolution, never while issuing orders.

RE: Intermittent lock up
I am also running Win 7 and the only time I have had lock-up issues with the game is when my Anti-Virus program was accessing the internet or screening an incoming internet communication. Most often it just minimizes the game screen while the modem flashes away and the AV program logo flashes once in a while.
When my internet line was down for a couple of days and I played WITP-AE, it ran with no interruptions and was much faster getting through turns than when connected. Makes me think the issue is that the game needs total control of the OS but the AV program won't let it when it is doing something in the background and especially when the latter is updating itself. Just tossing out an idea - no technical expertise behind it! [8|]
