However, his troops will be marching during the Monsoon Season in the Malaria Zone and getting supply to his troops will be slow too. Therefore, the ABDA forces at Akyab will remain.

Admiral Rio has been kind enough to give me command of his submarine fleet.
Yes, I know, Subs—the red-headed stepchild of the US fleet in WitPAE. I have the honor to replace auto-pilot (who, after all, really did nothing wrong).
But I'm excited. I've sent double-plied circular sweeps through Pearl - Wake - Marcus - S of Japan - E. Formosa - Marianas - Pearl; meanwhile, all S-class will comb the Kuriles.
All this could be like chimps picking stocks—maybe auto-pilot is like indexed funds. We'll see.
I have further sent subs to lay mines. It is my understanding that:
Mines last longer in shallow water;
Subs are more in jeopardy in shallow water;
HOWEVER, reading between the lines, I get the impression minelaying subs are NOT in as much jeopardy in shallows as those hunting ships.
Do any of the Gentlemen of the War College have an opinion of this supposition? It's not too late to change the destination hexes to deep water. I'd hate to lose a handful of my boys over a few mines. Plus I'll be fired.

It's September of 1942 so the IJN is starting to get:
- d/c s that will work below 150 feet.
- E class escorts designed to take on subs
- experience in sub hunting
- Helen bombers which are apparently good at ASW once the pilots are trained
You do not have good US torpedoes so the fleet boats getting caught in shallow waters have no way of hitting back at the escorts. Use your Dutch and British subs and S-boats in shallow waters if you must.
Many a sub has been lost going into an enemy port hex to mine it, only to hit the mines the enemy already laid there. It is probably smarter to lay your mines at shallow water choke points which the enemy ships must pass through.
Make a larger, concentrated field in preference to a lot of scattered mines in many hexes.
Watch the upgrades and conversions - they sometimes eliminate the mining capability or change the type of mine so that you cannot use up your stocks of the early war mines.
Don't discount using the subs to:
- sneak emergency supply to a cut-off unit
- pick up paratroop units stuck behind enemy lines (you do not have to be in a port hex to do this, but the coastline of the hex side must be blue, not red)
- picket for warning of enemy interference of major ops like amphib landings
- rescue pilots shot down over an enemy port or TF at sea (you do not have to assign this mission, just have the subs on patrol in the target hex)
- locate enemy carriers by probing the area they are probably in and having the sub D/L shoot up to 10/10
- probe enemy naval search patterns by checking the D/L on the sub in various locations.
As Canoerebel recently pointed out, the most important aspect of the game is intel information on the enemy. If you know what he has and where and what he seems to be aiming to do next, you can plan a counter to it.

- rescue pilots shot down over an enemy port or TF at sea (you do not have to assign this mission, just have the subs on patrol in the target hex)
- locate enemy carriers by probing the area they are probably in and having the sub D/L shoot up to 10/10
- probe enemy naval search patterns by checking the D/L on the sub in various locations.
As Canoerebel recently pointed out, the most important aspect of the game is intel information on the enemy. If you know what he has and where and what he seems to be aiming to do next, you can plan a counter to it.

I will definitely concentrate mines and use shallow choke points from here on in. It also sounds as though I should back off on some of the destinations I have going, as these may be too close to Singapore. Thus far I am using Dutch subs, because of the "test" theater chosen, but I plan on expanding this type of ops if these guys come home in one piece...

The second fleet of submarines will sweep from just below Koggala, Ceylon in a Southwesterly direction and down along the Eastern coast of Sumatra as far as Oosthaven.

My idea is simply to never have the subs in these current ops stand still, instead combing through large tracts of enemy-held waters in wide sweeps, attempting to keep D/L to a minimum.
One danger is traversing shallows, waypoint-to-waypoint, that may be too hot. Another is wasting a lot of time in "cool" waters. And then corrupted torpedo triggers will no doubt spoil even the lucky encounter...

Commander Haggard will be be sorry to hear that two of his subs spent six torpedoes to no avail. He will be even sadder to learn that four of the six torpedoes missed a Japanese CL.
Japanese get trashed at Colombo. El Lobo now has three divisions, two regiments, and a construction unit trying to take Colombo. The fort level is at 2. I suspect it is just a matter of time and Colombo will fall and El Lobo will own all of Ceylon.

Commander Haggard will be be sorry to hear that two of his subs spent six torpedoes to no avail. He will be even sadder to learn that four of the six torpedoes missed a Japanese CL.
Japanese get trashed at Colombo. El Lobo now has three divisions, two regiments, and a construction unit trying to take Colombo. The fort level is at 2. I suspect it is just a matter of time and Colombo will fall and El Lobo will own all of Ceylon.
