I don't think I'll ever forget that night in early September 43. The PBY's had reported a large Jap convoy heading into Port Blair with strong escorts. We sailed and spent the first day fruitlessly moving to and fro trying to find them. That night, I decided to go near the port to see what we could find. Coming out of the mist we saw a IJN battleline at just 1,000 yards! We crossed their T and I never saw such a beautiful bracket of fire than that laid down by the CL Newcastle. She must have hit the Furutaka 5 times when, all of a sudden, the Newcastle was gone. I guess it was torpedoes but it left my bridge in stunned silence. A few more hits were exchanged and we lost them in a rain squall.
