SW PAC: Joseph sent in some sweeps down here for the first time since taking the game over. Looks like he's about to start taking some steps to get moving.

On the 17th he sent in a bunch of P-38H groups with a few Kittyhawk III to Madang. I had a low CAP set, although not in the three step layering at 9k, 7k, and 5k that I'd been testing. I'd flown out the low group to cover some incoming supply transports. The defense still did well though, getting about 1:1 and only losing 6 pilots on the day. Others got good experience. I'll move in a fresh Tojo group for the 7k CAP and drop the remaining A6M5b group to 5k for tomorrow. J2M2 are at 9k. Of note, all groups scrambled fighters even though set to 60-70% CAP. Only one radar here so warning was poor.

Some troops are moving down here to add on to Umboi Island, Cape Goucester, Long Island and back fill in some rear bases after I flew the major garrison force from Wewak to Finschafen. Looks like the Allies aren't moving forward there anymore though from Lae. They have also stopped the little supply drops around NW Oz and into the Solomons.

BURMA: Lots of movement along the Arakan. More troops moving up to do something. Maybe just get Akyab and Ramree built up. With the update to the recent patch I've made the choice to only try to close bases when necessary since the cost is much hgher losing 3-5 Helens per strike to CAP when I wasn't losing any before the update. No complaints though. This should help my jungle troops in Burma hold and my HI defenses later.

CENT PAC: Nothing moving out here. Still getting big hits on PH for SIGINT. Nothing helpful in the rollover yet.

I found my three remaining midget sub carriers and I'm sending one midget to Wake to see if I can't hit the AR in there. I'll then try to go pick up the very damaged midgets at Marcus to get them back to a shipyard, fixed and recycled. Noticed too that I've now lost around 8 Glen subs, which sucks. I need a few more for deep ocean recon. I might se some of he smaller Husimi class AV for this with Norms on board out in the IO since I need good tabs on surprises there, and if I lose them to CV air it would be worth it to know something is coming. As long as the ships don't get sighted and tracked on SIGINT the Norms might even find the enemy at 12-15 hexes before he knows where they are, and they could potentially still get out of dodge. A secondary benefit woud be to see if Joseph will be reckless with his supply lines to Oz from Cape town. If so, tankers make nice VP heavy targets that burn nicely even after only a few 50kg bomb hits. [:)]

ECON: My supply is going down for the first time in a while due to engine factory enlargements recently undertaken. I set a limit for myself for all fort building and base expansion of Jan 1, 1944. Everything will stop at that date. I don't care if I think I need it or not. All major strong points will have 5-7 forts by this time anyway, and most HI bases will have at least 3 forts and the airfields expanded to accommodate the late war confusion of groups all over the place. All potential major landing zones in the DEI, Burmese/Thai/Malay coasts, Kuriles/Hokkaido, and the PI that I plan to defend should be at forts 5-7 by then too.

At that point I want to save a whole bunch of supply. Palembang has been feeding the Burma troops, Medan feeding Sumatra building, with Miri/Balikpapan/Tarakan serving my Aussie plans and sending some out to Babeldaop, then to the Marianas. China is self-sufficient. The only supply coming from the HI is really to South/Cent Pac, usually in combo with units moving down.

18-19 November, 1943
OZ: So now that we've settled into the game a bit I felt it was time to try a few things. Step one came off poorly, but could still have the desired result.

I've been sending recon all over Australia and so far I haven't seen a lot of response in terms of the Allies adjusting CAP. I got a good read on Perth and there were no fighters up, so I rushed in the G3M3 that I'd been resting and gave them a shot. I added a few Emilys on for good measure and set it all to fly on the 19th.

Well, unfortunately the Emilys flew and the Nells did not, blowing my cover for the much bigger strike by the 2Es. Got two hits on subs and sunk an AMc. Ok. no big deal. I would guess now he'll cover Perth with CAP. If not I'll go back.

First though I have 100+ Nells set to strike Kalgoorlie's resources and another 100+ Bettys aiming for Cloncurry's resources for the 20th. The Cloncurry strikes have 45 A6M3a as escorts, but nothing for the Western strike. Here's hoping there is no CAP there! [:D]

After all of that I plan to bury Corunna Downs resources in 250kg bombs and para-drop Port Hedland, likely taking it back. Just some fun and easy pickins to hopefully set the Allies behind a bit further and gain some VPs the easy way.

SW PAC: Sending in all kinds of small supply TFs down here and there is no DL on them so far. They're covered by CAP, but it's possible he's not flying a lot of search, too.

It is at least for the period from Jan 1 to July 1. After that I may resume some in the PI, along the Chinese coast, the inner islands and HI.

The other good thing I've been noticing about the low CAP is that my guys are staying fresh and full of good morale. Different than flying CAP at 31k, when they often dip into the 80s.

I just got the turn back from Joseph. He called me Commander Stormwolf for that Emily raid! [:D]

Now lets see if the other stuff actually worked or if I lost a bunch of 2Es.

OZ: Ok. It worked. Lots of Netties over various parts of OZ report 318 strategic points of damage to resource centers. [:)]

Now for part two. I'll be sending the bombers after whatever 900 man unit is at Port Hedland, followed by the 1st para-regiment. After that I'll consider options based on what recon shows, but will certainly take out the 100+ resources at Corunna Downs. I like this strat bombing thing in Oz. That is a lot of points from one day. [X(]

BURMA: Nothing going on. Another division finally got the 43 squads. About 2-3 left, but a big supply TF on the way that should help.

CENT PAC: Decided to boost Marcus back up to level 6 forts. Why not? If he does come again, those units are nice and experienced now! [:)]

SW PAC: My supply TFs are still unwatched. I'll keep fingers crossed it all can get landed.

In an interesting development, Salamua flips to the Japanese unexpectedly! He has a Brigade and base forces at Lae and a Division at Nadzab, but they won't be getting much supply soon since that just got cut when Salamua turned Japanese. Crazy. I few in a small SNLF battalion with 16 AV and a piece of an engineer unit to build a fort or two with the nice 2,800 supply points the Allies left sitting here. He needs naval forces in there now. I have lots of DBs in the area, and four old Kamikaze class DDs are on route to Rabaul to serve as surface protection.

Once the Oz situation has died down a bit I'll pop some Emilys at Kirakira for a good look around, then I need to send a good supply dump to Rekata Bay and Munda to be able to hold them for a bit longer.

21 November, 1943
OZ: The Australia plan continues. Netties bomb the unsuspecting base force at Port Hedland which is then overwhelmed by the IJ para troops of the 1st Raiding reg. Not much supply gained here but Allied troops surrender, which is always good, and this makes the obliteration of Corunna Downs the next step.

Recon shows 6 bombers, as previous, and two fighters at Perth. Odd. This makes me think a group was railed in and is repairing. I considered another strike here but I'll wait as I think there are bigger fish in the water.

I've decided that since Kalgoorlie is empty, I'll prepare an invasion of Geraldton and a para-drop on Kalgoorlie. This could go badly wrong if the Allied presence here is more than recon shows, but it's also a golden chance to hit some more resources, potentially wipe out some Allied troops, and to possibly acquire some fuel and supply resources that have been sent to West Oz. It's a gamble, but if the rail can be closed the Allies would have a long ride to get CVs in here from their presumed base at Pearl.

The drawback is I can't go until the mini-Kb transits to the DEI form it's previous station at Iwo Jima. It's now nearing Babeldaob. I have the amphibs and two divisions prepping for lightly held Geraldton, which shows two units and about 3k troops total. Probably an engineer and base force, or a small CD unit. There seem to be few if any AFVs in the whole area, and if Perth is showing 4 units for 12.5k troops with 80 guns and 9 AFVs, not much at all for opposition. My units would only get to 50-60% prep, but if the ground troops were light and got softened up, that could be enough. Then land a few more fresh units behind them.

If this takes more than a week to set up I'm worried the Allies will either see something on SIGINT or get the itch that things are not as they should be in West Oz, and send in reinforcements. I could preempt it all with a quick para-strike now, but that unit from Perth could then walk before I could get forces in the area, and lots of DBs and fighters could be flown in to Perth, not to mention some 4E or 2E to smash my troops and the fields so nothing else could be flown in.

It seems a D-Day would be two weeks out at the earliest, giving a chance to get in air cover, load two divisions plus follow on support and also troops to take Esperance and march on Kalgoorlie to reinforce. Let me know thoughts and if I'm being totally crazy here.

CENT PAC: Sending in lots of recon subs to watch for movements of the Allied fleets from Pearl. I've got two Glen subs on station, one to the NW and one due W from Pearl. A hunter/killer group of one Glen sub and three fast I-boats are heading to the area SW of the Big Island.

SW PAC: I'll continue making some noise down here to try to keep a focus in the area. Joseph bombed the troops at Kirakira yesterday with B-25D1s. I sent in a group of Rufes to discourage this activity. We'll see if they get eaten up by the forward guns of the strafers or if they can actually get behind for a few kills.

ECON: Two brand new shiny CVs arrived today. The last in the queue. (Not making Shinano or the last small Army CVEs). This means we had a major surplus of Naval points. I spent some time going through both Naval and Merchant lines and getting a better sense of what I still want.

I cancelled some later arriving fast tankers to prioritize medium and small short hoppers that arrive earlier. I'm finding with coastal routing it makes sense to send medium sized tankers on shorter hauls to places like Takao and Manilla from the DEI. Then I need more medium tankers to haul along the islands and coast to the main western ports of the HI.

For the Naval construction I was able to add a number of subs to the queue. I'll build a lot of them, as I know I'll lose a lot, and still think it's worth it in VPs if one or two large ships can be sunk. They are also incredibly useful for early warning. Looking forward to the Es coming soon. After a few RO boats come in early 44 I may accelerate some late arriving DDs, as I know from experience I'll be very short come the start of 45.

It's the only one I've even found of an actual IJN sub carrier in action on the water. Lots of dry-docked midgets ready to tackle the Allied invasion of the HI pics, lots of washed up midget picks, but no others I can find like this. It was really small so had to doctor it up a bit.

Ok. So I learned something. Even on the sub carrier an injured midget will sink if it's got high system damage. I hadn't seen that before.

How in the world does it sink? It's strapped to the deck of a boat moving on the surface?? [:-][X(]

I don't think he was there, but the broad might have been. The midget did happen to sink during the time a very ... um, small waisted, dress was found in the I-22 laundry area. [:-]

22-24 November, 1943
BURMA: A few boring turns and then the Allies showed they're coming out to play at last. On the 24th the change was first indicated by a P-47 sweep over Chang Mai. I'd been using this as a bomber base for ages, only protected by Oscar and A6M3a escort CAP. It was out of fighter range but I haven't been bombing Lashio and Akyab lately, so now it is definitely in range.

Joseph's first big strike as Allied commander comes off nearly perfectly. He targets the weak point and sends massive force to overwhelm the base defenses. To top it off there was no AA here, so 26 planes destroyed on the ground and another 38 in the air defending sweeps. Fortunately, only 12 pilots are KIA or MIA. All planes here will fly/rail out and we'll reset.

I'm hoping this means he'll soon begin to test other defenses. We'll see. The first Frank group is ready to go in Rangoon, and Georges and Jacks are mixed in with Tojo IIc at the other major airfields. The Allies have a few hundred P-47s and Corsairs, should have just gotten the Spit VIII and have at least 250-300 4E in the area.

WEST OZ: Looks like something from Perth has moved to Kalgoorlie. No chance to Paradrop there now. Still preparing some more action in the area though. I'd like to get Exmouth and Carnarvon back just to stall things in this area and make search and recon harder for the Allies into the DEI.

CHINA: In China there is a good group of forces at Sining, so I'll wait for reinforcements before attacking here, not knowing forts. These units should just be VPs at this point.

SW PAC: A P-38 sweep ruined our Rufe ambush at Kirakira. I left them there too long, so my bad, and good play on Joseph's part. Lost about 10 planes, but again not many pilots over our base.

Having some problems with CV air groups arriving on their ships. The Ryuho has been in Yokohama for a few weeks but the air groups have not arrived on ship even though it's empty and in port. I took it out and docked it thinking that might be the key, but no go. Any thoughts?

I have not seen that before with the Ryuho...sounds like a good tech support question.

I am amazed at even how just one AA battery can reduce the damage to planes on the ground and ships in port.

AA, don't leave the home islands without it.[;)]

I have a lot of AA sitting in the HI and some of the unrestricted units will be moving forward. In a game where the KB is reduced I'm loathe to move a lot of it out, just to make sure any decisive move into range of he HI still has a decent counter from AA and air groups in the HI. It's a little bit like Japan in the war, keeping the Georges and other best planes, plus some very large and experienced divisions in the HI, Korea, China and elsewhere around the inner circle.

Although I'm threatening forward, I actually want to stall for time to be able to create a modified Capt Cruft inner circle defense. A few hard outer layers and a jaw breaking nut in the area round the HI.

Air groups for Japanese CVs - Don't forget that for some scenarios the air groups come in as if the CV was never accelerated. I know it shouldn't happen, but sometimes the mod was not set up well enough and this happens.

Pilot vs airframe losses - For Japan, they can afford airframes being destroyed, but not dead pilots. For Allies, I'm usually in great shape when it come to US Army fighter pilots, but cannot afford the airframe losses. Go figure!?! [:D]

So, the Ryuho has been in game for a while, and it wasn't accelerated. The air group just arrives later. The air group has been sitting in the arrival queue for 1-2 weeks at 2 days. The Ryuho is empty, is sitting in Yokohama, and the air group won't arrive.

That's very odd. What happens if you move her to Tokyo? Probably nothing, I know.

I'll give it a try since she's right there.
