Newbie Question Difference between AP vs. XAP

Post by krb3 »

A little help requested. I thought I read in manual that difference between an XAP and an AP is that an XAP has to use a dock facility to unload troops and AP can be used in an invasion force on an island. After combing through manual again I cannot find where that is stated. Is this correct or not? Thanks in advance.

Both can be used in an amphib TF, But the AP will unload at a faster rate than a xAP. See pages 127 and 128....GP

A ship with an "x" before it, such as a xAK, xAKL or xAP is a ship with a civilian crew (merchant marine) contracted by the government while an AP or AK is a naval auxiliary that is manned by navy types. Because it is run by the navy it is faster at what it does, not because it is "better" per say, but that it usually has a far bigger crew than a civilian ship (crew cost money, less profit).

APs, AKs, AKAs, and APAs have integral landing craft on the ship. The AKAs and APAs have more than the AKs and APs. The xAKs and xAPs are commercial ships built for dock to dock cargo/passenger role and only have lifeboats for the crew. As a result, xAKs and xAPs unload much slower in an amphibious TF than the other ship types.

Also, an empty AP embedded in xAP TF will make the xAPs unload quicker.

I believe it was disclosed this only works with APA, and/or AKA. If you have a reference to APs please post it.

Here it is:

tm.asp?m=2188327&mpage=1&key=undocked%2Cunload&

DanBowen:

"TF mission, number and type of ships, and load of ships. The really good amphib ships (like APA/AKA) and to a lessor extent AP/AK can help other undocked ships unload (represents use of the landing craft that they carry).

There are also separate ops limits for undocked cargo handling from ports, in addition to the and on top of the normal ones.

Dock'm if you can."

I believe there was a discussioin that an AGC (even without an AMPH Force HQ) also assists with unloading speed.

I don't know as I would put the AP in there empty. You might load it "troops only" so they get around to helping the others sooner. APs are better at unloading quickly and getting the troops unloaded ASAP is essential. Load the xAPs with supplies mainly or support units.

Not sure about the rate of unloading, but the Amphib Force HQs on AGCs help reduce losses overboard during landings (by reducing congestion at the beach I guess). Note that it is not the AGC alone that does this - you need the Amphib Force HQ.

The developers may have given a slight boost to unloading rate to reflect better coordination of landing craft.
