Operation Lüttich

Post by rico21 »

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Lüttich was a codename given to a German counter-attack during the Battle of Normandy,
which took place around the American positions near Mortain from 7 August to 13 August 1944.
(Lüttich is the German name for the city of Liège in Belgium, where the Germans had won a victory in the early days
of August 1914 during World War I.) The offensive is also referred to in American and British histories of the
Battle of Normandy as the Mortain counter-offensive.

The assault was ordered by Adolf Hitler, to eliminate the gains made by the First United States Army during
Operation Cobra and the subsequent weeks, and by reaching the coast in the region of Avranches at the base of the
Cotentin peninsula, cut off the units of the Third United States Army which had advanced into Brittany.

The main German striking force was the XLVII Panzer Corps, with one and a half SS Panzer Divisions and two
Wehrmacht Panzer Divisions. Although they made initial gains against the defending U.S. VII Corps, they were soon
halted and Allied aircraft inflicted severe losses on the attacking troops, eventually destroying nearly half of
the German tanks involved in the attack.[2] Although fighting continued around Mortain for six days, the American
forces had regained the initiative within a day of the opening of the German attack.

As the German commanders on the spot had warned Hitler in vain, there was little chance of the attack succeeding,
and the concentration of their armoured reserves at the western end of the front in Normandy soon led to disaster,
as they were outflanked to their south and the front to their east collapsed, resulting in many of the German
troops in Normandy being trapped in the Falaise Pocket.

I just played "Prelude to Luttich" as both sides:
- as the Germans, I got a Major Victory (many thanks to the American artillery, which killed both gun crews for me [:D]*)
- as the Americans, I managed to kill a Panther [:D] and a Puma (then peeled off all the Zimmerit and Paint on the remaining two Panthers: I think they were laughing so much at my attempts to obtain a Critical Hit that their accuracy was affected; in fact, they only managed to break a crew at the last turn). I only obtained a Draw, since I kept the VP hex (2 VP), but I didn't kill any German squad (1 VP each), even though none of them managed to cross the road and get close to the VP hex.

(*) On Turn 2, before the radio entered the map :D.

I'm looking forward to the next scenarios!

Salut Carlo,
The odds were with you and OBA == One Boom Anywhere.
I prepared the BZK especially for you, you used your tank tankdozer in through the hedge like Barkmann Corner and
presto, a panther less.
But hush, I hear panthers, other players arrive.

Soon the next, but before Mike needs my assistance to help capture "Paulus" in Stalingrad.[;)]

Grazie mille.

I repeatedly tried to kill a Panther with the Bazooka-armed squad, but every time I tried the damn feline made my squad break [:(].

As for OBA, I think it needs some serious overhaul.

When AI uses it, it works like a random meteor shower falling across the board. It is undoubtedly very lethal, sometimes for the human player (in a game of "Paw of the Tiger, it killed 7 of the 11 tanks I lost), sometimes for the AI itself (leaving aside the example I reported above, in a game of "The Hedgehog of Piepsk", it wiped out about 75% of the German units in its very first Defensive fire).

When I have it, I rejoice when I see single attack performed over the whole game session [:(]. This usually happens after a series of "failed contact", "failed battery access" [:@]. I would gladly exchange any OBA for a good, old, reliable on-board medium mortar.

Great! I had little spare time, so I only played "Breaking at St. Bart" once with the Americans, ending up in a vicious street-fighting (and a Minor Victory)
