Unit boxes around numbers

I play this game a great deal. The AI units have the silver/grey around the unit strength boxes and others have the gold/yellow background.

I was wondering about the AI with these core units and should those units be destroyed first?

What is the difference between these units in the grand scheme of the game for the AI side?

It has no importance if the AI units are auxiliary or core.

The only thing to keep in mind is that each scenario has a certain number of maximum slots for Auxiliary and Core units for both sides. Depending on what that number is and how many units in that category there are on the map, if you destroy an AI unit you might open a recruitment slot for it in the relevant category. I`m mentioning this for the hypothetical case when there are many auxiliary units (more than there are slots for them in a scenario) and smaller number of core units. It might be quicker to get the AI a free recruitment slot if you destroy a core unit in such a case. But this is just for the sake of theory. It wouldn`t change my decision on what units to target first.

Thanks r35 for the answer, I was also wondering does the AI run out of prestige? That would be a cool thing to know with some kind of intel in the game

Depends upon the scenario design.

Each map is different.

Some maps the AI gets nothing unless it captures a town.
