I think troops in reserve mode do suffer less from aerial bombing and naval/land bombardment too. IRL reserve troops would be hunkered down in some kind of cover, waiting for orders so I think the developers worked that kind of thing into the combat models.

I guess I know where's he's kept his subs this game, as there's a cloud of them around Truk, ferreted out by my SB2Cs. I'll round the north side to a spot 6 hexes away, so I can hit all the transports I can see there.
If he has one blind spot, I think he could have carried out a better sub campaign. I can be rather free and loose with running my ships between Pearl and the States. He had somewhat of one going early in the game, but after my blimps beat up some, they never really returned. I'd have been spending mini-subs like pennies too.
As it is, I have a dedicated ASW group with each invasion TF, which will probably blunt any attempt on them. I've come to the conclusion that subs will never stop anything serious.

Judgement day.
My carriers hit his shipping at Truk. It really wasn't pretty. Despite greatly outnumbering him in fighters, my CAP just seemed to peter out and his guys would break through to my bombers. Probably 50 of my fighters down and more strike planes, mostly SB2Cs down. It's still < 10% of my fighter strength, so I'll back off from there.
However... his carriers appear to have arrived to the west of here. Taking a deep breath, I'm moving after them. I figure ship vs ship, it'll have to be more even at this point -- especially if it's mostly Zekes up.
We'll see.
My armor reaches Kohima, and I'm attacking there. Other than that, my guys have cleared away from his and I'm bombing airfields.

Those aircraft losses were not worth the xAKLs you hit. I would guess that he deliberately put them there as bait for his CAP trap.
Good luck with his carriers, but keep an eye on your pilot fatigue. I find that after two days of strikes they hit little on day three, and you already have strike one!

Wow -- I would have thought Corsairs would do better than that. He must have some elite pilots there.

This is why I'm so reluctant to send carriers to sink enemy shipping. It's gotta be carrying fuel or troops to really be worth it if its near a base that can provide CAP.

If they struggled to hit ships at a base, my carriers at least showed they could defend themselves. I'm not quite sure where the raid came from, but I think I was far enough from Truk where these probably came from the Marianas. Only two bombers got through the CAP.
"KB" up and ran, and I've lost sight of them. I'm moving my ships NE to rendezvous with the big mob. I need to refuel anyway, as they're getting a bit down. I'm staying away from Truk doing this.
I take my shot at Imphal, but don't get good odds. Fortunately, my losses were light.
The US 41st Infantry Division is probably one of my only full strength units in India. I'm railing them to Dimapur so they can join in at Imphal. Nice being able to control the countryside.
Howrah and Calcutta at 100% damage. Diamond Harbor at 40%. I'll just keep them that way.
KS is going out of town, so I won't get another turn 'til tomorrow afternoon.

With heavy heart, I'm pulling the plug on my Marianas/Truk invasion for now.
My covering force of fleet carriers has been taking heavy hits to the strike planes. The scouts have been getting shredded by Truk's CAP. 40 SB2Cs went down just today, between the scouts and a couple shots taken at ships at Truk. I'm almost tempted to stand down all the naval bombers but I want them up in case KB comes at me. It looks like KB is parked in the hex just east of Truk right now, so anything I launch also has to deal with the 150 land based fighters there. I wasn't really happy with my troop dispositions on the ships anyway, and I had lots of follow-on TFs carrying parts of units which didn't load. I've been getting lots more APAs at Pearl since this kicked off, so I can do a better job forming this up next time.
The shots I took were rather lame. 4-6 bombers escorted by some 200-ish fighters.
My carriers are halfway between Guam and Truk, moving NE. I'm trying to get out of range of Truk, so my bombers lay off. Fuel's an issue, so I detached some oilers from the main group with two CVE groups to a spot west of Wake, so I can top everyone off.
I did catch some ships near Tinian.
KS took a couple shots at my fleet carriers, and they were easily rebuffed. The bombers tended to run this time, so their losses were lower than the first time.
In India, everyone but one unit reach Asansol. I'm standing my bombers down to recover. It took me a while to go through every squadron to get the pilot situation fixed up. I figure if he moves planes in again. I'll just sweep them away again. He hasn't been able to stop me when I turn everything on. Calcutta's at 100% while the other two are around 70%. One B-29 squadron withdrew as they were due within a few weeks. Some of the older 7 planes squadrons will be going over the next month.
As far as the east Pacific goes, I'm going to move more incrementally. I'll probably take Wake, Eniwetok and Ponape before going further. Maybe Truk only after that. I think I was spreading things out a bit too thin. If/when KB is dead, I can be more carefree with things. I was getting obsessed with the historical timeline, but I really shouldn't worry about that.

I think you made the right move to abort the invasion until you can replenish your carriers. You need to come in with a full deck.

I definitely agree with moving incrementally because going after the Marianas in the way you were doing seemed very risky. Better to delay than risk your whole CV fleet. As far as the east Pacific goes, I'm going to move more incrementally. I'll probably take Wake, Eniwetok and Ponape before going further. Maybe Truk only after that. I think I was spreading things out a bit too thin. If/when KB is dead, I can be more carefree with things. I was getting obsessed with the historical timeline, but I really shouldn't worry about that.
If not I would recommend a total reevaluation of your Pacific plans because you have nothing else in the pipeline. Again, I reiterate trying to open a second front in the Pacific further south so the Japanese cannot concentrate all their resources in the CentPac to stop you. Certainly those divisions in India could be of use there. I know the Solomons seem a bit out of the way but it certainly beats having to scrap long planned invasions or losing half your fleet.

He's also getting cutesy with his surfaces forces at Truk and is trying to box me out. I showed him I can still dish it out.
My carriers are heading due east in the pic below and should reach the tankers in two days. I've also taken the battleships, some CLs and destroyers from the carrier groups and made a separate surface force in case he reaches me. Two South Dakotas and two Iowas are in this, so he'd probably regret any real surface fight here.
Calcutta went from 100% to 75%, so he probably has several thousand engineers there.

If you have rough parity, then you are facing a stalemate. A few more or a few less divisions won't change that. But in the Pacific a couple of divisions and a corps HQ can take most island bases. You need to think long term strategy on how those units are going to help you reach it. Is experimenting with paras really a strategy?ORIGINAL: Mundy

Well, KS pulled my own stunt on me and caught up with my carrier forces. Three different surface groups intercept me. One cruiser based, the second built around Ise and Hyuga, and the last with the two Yamatos. They manage to bypass my surface group both times. One thing I have to say is that this game is good at simulating the screen doing what they can to run interference while the carriers get away.
I stripped out all the "engages" lines to keep this readable.
Out of the main fleet carriers, only Intrepid took any real damage and even that was fairly moderate. (about 20 flt) A couple CVLs took hits also, but they'll make it. Unfortunately, New Jersey does succumb to flooding and goes down. That one torpedo hit probably did the deal. Yamato took several penetrating 16" hits to the hull and superstructure, including engine damage, so at worst, she'll be out of the war for quite some time. A CL is beat up pretty good, too. Everything could have been a lot worse. No planes attacked them at the end. Franceses from Guam took one last shot with bombs at extreme range, but all missed. At this point, everyone's successfully disengaged and heading home. I was hoping all my CVE (20 of them) would have been in range to strike, but I guess not. Most of Musashi's hits suffered were pretty superficial. I've noticed that at 20,000 yds and longer, his deck armor was protecting the two big guys pretty well. At closer ranges, my 16" shells were punching through his belt pretty good.
Everything's settled down in India. I can't seem to believe my recon, as it now shows Calcutta at 90% again. Several units at Asansol have started upgrading ground units, despite the sparse supply there.

One final note. With all the air searches going on in the battle area. I got notes that Graces were doing some of the searches. That'll probably be something to be careful of when confronting KB.

Looks like the Japanese came out slightly ahead in that battle trading a CA for a fast BB. Unfortunate that your CVs planes didn't strike; that could have devastated that IJN surface fleet. I see there are day battles as well; why didn't your CV planes fly? Did you turn off their naval strike orders?
I guess one lesson from this is that even now you cannot simply manhandle any IJN fleet you encounter. Even at this late date the IJN surface ships are a force to be reckoned with. At least now you can wait for your ships to get repaired while you figure out your next moves while the IJN will also have to seek repairs.

It doesn't look like the IJN big boys have much staying power. All their main armament ammunition was at zero, according to KS.

I'm not sure Yamato's totally out of the woods yet. She was on fire, so you never know. Also, where's she headed to? Truk? Never get fully done up there. If it's the home islands, he has to run the sub gauntlet there. The game's not over yet for her.
Light armor reaches Darjeeling and will take it next turn. The only city in Japanese hands apart from the three is Imphal, and I'll have the USA division there within a week to 10 days.
Some US Army tanks are shipping out of Melbourne for Pearl. A regiment left about a week ago.
